  • The object of this research is to develop an Interactive Computerized Graphic Program for graphic output of velocity, acceleration and motion range of body-task reference point (e.g., C.O.G., joint location, etc.). Human motions can be reproduced by scanning (rate = 60Hz) the vidicon image, and the results are stored in an Apple II P.C. memory. The results of this study can be extended to simulation and reproduction of human motions for optimal task design.

  • This paper presents the development of videobased 3-dimensional tracking system. Measurement of human motion is important in the application of ertonomics. The system uses advanced direct video measurement technology. Passive retro-reflecting markers are attached to a subject and movements of markers are observed by two CCD cameras. Infrared light emitted near the CCD cameras is reflected by the markers and is detected by the cameras. The images are captured by Samsung MVB302 board and the centers of markers are calculated by DSP program. The positions of markers are transferred from MVB02 board to the computer through AT bus. The computer then tracks the position of each marker and saves the data. This system has dynamic accuracy with 0.7% average error and 4.2% maximum error, and the sampling rate to 6 .approx. 10 Hz, and this system can analyse the trajectory and speed of the marker. The results of this study can be used for operator's motion analysis, task analysis, and hand movement characteristic analysis.

  • An intelligent robot, which has been developed recently, is no more a conventional robot widely known as an industrial robot. It is a computer system embedded in a machine and utilizes the machine as a medium not only for the communication between the human and the computer but also for the physical interaction among the human, the computer and their environment. Recent advances in computer technology have made it possible to create several of new types of human-computer interaction which are realized by utilizing intelligent machines. There is a continuing need for better understanding of how to design human/robot interface(HRI) to make for a more natural and efficient flow of information and feedback between robot systems and their users in both directions. In this paper, we explain the concept and the scope of HRI and review the current research trends of domestic and foreign HRL. The recommended research directions in the near future are also discussed based upon a comparative study of domestic and foreign HRI technology.

  • Today we are observing a lot of injuries, casualties, and property losses that are mainly caused by the defects of products. In order to derive safety designs, which minimize the possibility of such product liability-related accidents, we need to take into account the user-product interaction as an important part of the danger factor analysis. Existing risk analysis techniques, however, have some limitations in detecting comprehensive danger factors that are peculiarly involved in human errors and the functional defects of products. Researches on danger factor analysis regarding the user-product interaction have been carried out actively in ergonomics. In this paper, we suggest a novel product risk analysis technique, which is more objective and systematic compared to the previous ones, by combining a modified TAFEI (Task Analysis For Error Identification) technique with SASA (Systematic Approach to Accident Scenario Analysis) technique. By applying this technique to the product design practice in industry, corporations will be able to improve the product safety, consequently strengthening the competitiveness.

  • This research extends a general theory of cognition to address cognitive constraints on complex command production and allows us to make system design recommendations. The research described in this paper addresses the cognitive origins of problems user have producing sequence-dependent command strings while interacting with the UNIX operating system. We describe an empirical and theoretical analysis of user difficulties, and then show how our analyses lead to design recommendations. In addition, we summarize results from testing the impact of our design recommendations on system usability

  • This paper is concerned with a chronological analysis of the simple limb movement and the performance of a selective response for Korean adults. The cybernetical control number(C.C.No) tester is used to perform the experiment for 103 males and 96 females aged from 20s to above 60s. For the selective response ecperiment, judgement speed has decreased with age. The judgement speed was slowed down more rapidly with age for female than for male. Both the limb movement and the judgement speed showed significantly different trends according to age groups. Especially, it was shown that simple limb movement decreased beginning with 50s for male and 40s for female. It is expected that the results can be applied to the job design of aged people.

  • This study investigated the recruitment patterns of ten trunk muscles in isometric exertion tasks, focused on the functional roles (agonist or antagonist). Twelve male students performed maximum voluntary isometric exertion tasks towards six directions: flexion/extension, left/right lateral bending, and clockwise/counter-clockwise twisting. EMG signals from ten trunk muscles and exertion forces were collected. Normalized EMG (NEMG) values were calculated at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 %MVC. The subjects showed a limited capacity in producing twisting moments, approximately 50% of the extension moment, and 70% of lateral bending moments. EMG activity was dependent on the direction and magnitude of the exertion, and also on the functional role. The mean NEMG of agonist was 0.260 and 0.067 for antagonist. Agonists showed the highest mean NEMG in flexion (0.367), while antagonists showed the highest mean NEMG in twisting clockwise/counter-clockwise (0.090/0.106).

  • This article aims to provide information necessary for the measurement and analysis of human vibration, especially hand-arm vibration. The major health problems associated with the use of powered hand tools are the signs and symptoms of peripheral vascular and peripheral neural disorders of the fingers and hands. To prevent these problems, it is the first and the most important to measure the amount of the vibration transmitted to the upper extremities, and analyze its characteristics against the exposure limits such as ISO standards. In our country, however, very few studies have been done on the hand-arm vibration. One of the possible reasons might be lack of knowledge for the measurement and analysis schemes. The information introduced in this article would hopefully be of help for the upcoming studies.

  • In order to apply three-dimensional images to industries, the possibility of realizing three-dimensional images should be ensured and when operating a task using three-dimensional images, the intention of the observer and the result of operation should be precisely related. The aim of this paper is to investigate the task performance of a human operator during operating a robot manipulator using three-dimensional and two-dimensional image displays. From the result of this research, it was found that the accuracy of robot operation in the case of using three-dimensional displays is much higher than in the case of using two-dimensional displays and the adapting time to the operating task using three-dimensional displays is shorter than that using two-dimensional displays. From such results, we concluded that the application of three-dimensional displays, which can closely reflect real environment, to industries is desirable.
