  • GFRP rebar with ribs resemble those of deformed steel rebar was developed in 2005. It was reported that ribs of the GFRP rebar were sheared off due to the lower shear strength of polymer. In this study, the basic development length of the GFRP rebar was investigated through pull-out tests, models specified in ACI440.1R-03 and -06, and empirical model derived by Cosenza et al. (2002). As a results of pull-out tests, the critical embeddment length, which is defined as the length when failure mode is changed from pull-out to bar fracture, was 20 times of bar diameter for GFRP rebar and was 15 times for steel rebar. It is believed that the basic development of the GFRP rebar is 21 times of bar diameter, which is determined from the application of average bond strength into the model equation specified in ACI440.1R-03. Compared to the model equation in ACI440.1R-06, that in ACI440.1R-03 is recommendable for design purpose. The Cosenza et al.'s model underestimates the basic development length of the GFRP rebar.

  • Bond of deformed type of GFRP rebar, which has deformations resembles that of ordinary steel rebar, to concrete was investigated experimentally and numerically in this paper. Due to the lower stiffness and strength in shear, surface deformations do not fully works in bond with surrounding concrete. In this paper, the effective surface deformation height of GFRP rebar with ribs was determined based on experimental and numerical results.

  • The cost of repairing the deterioration of concrete structures due to corrosion of the reinforcement steel has been the prominent figure in the maintenacne of the reinforced-concrete infrastructures. As an alternative material to steel reinforcement, the use of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bar in concrete is being actively studied for the high resistance of chemical environment and high strength to weight ratio properties of GFRP. However, there remain various aspects of GFRP properties that still need to be studied before the standard design criteria can be established. One of the imminent issues is the bond between GFRP and concrete. In this study, the bond-behavior of GFRP bars in concrete is investigated via the pullout test with varying parameters: surface condition of GFRP bars and concrete compression strength. And the local bond-stress model of GFRP rabars with applying monotonc load was also derived from the present test.

  • FRP reinforced lightweight concrete structures can offer corrosion resistance and weight reduction effect simultaneously, so practical use of the structures may be expected afterwards. But to make concrete structures using lightweight concrete and FRP bar, that can resist external forces without internal slip of the FRP bar, it is very important to understand bond characteristic between lightweight concrete and FRP bar. During that time, a lot of studies for bond behaviors of FRP bar in normal concrete were conducted, but studies for bond behavior of FRP bar in lightweight concrete are very limited to date. So, bond characteristic between lightweight concrete and helically deformed GFRP bar was investigated in this study. Three main parameters were considered in experimental investigation: type of rebar, concrete type, and compressive strength of lightweight concrete. As an experimental result, it could be known that bond strength of helically deformed GFRP bar in lightweight concrete was 0.49 times bond strength of steel reinforcement in normal concrete.

  • The effect of composite reinforcing bars on surface electrical resistivity of concrete was investigated through experimental program. The resistivity was measured by Wenner method using an equipment with 4 probe. Ordinary steel, GFRP, and CFRP reinforcing bars produced domestically were used and a specimen with no reinforcement was tested for the comparison. This investigation is motivated from the fact that measured value of resistivity of concrete is significantly affected by details of steel reinforcements, such as location, depth and direction of the internal steel reinforcement. These results could be valuable data for evaluation of corrosion degree of concrete structures reinforced or strengthened by the composite reinforcing bars.

  • GFRP rebars could be deteriorated by concrete alkalinity. This paper focuses on the investigation of durability of GFRP rebars with ribs exposed to alkaline environment of concrete. It has been reported that the milled E-glass fibers in the ribs of GFRP rebar can increase bond strength between GFRP rebars and the concrete. In this study, the effect of milled alkaline resistant glass fibers (milled AR glass) and milled E-glass in the ribs on the durability of GFRP rebar is investigated through ISS tests and moist absorption tests of the bare rebar. To accelerate the effect of the alkalinity, high temperature($40^{\circ}C$) was applied. According to the test results, mix ratio of milled glass fibers in the ribs by weight had significant effect on durability of GFRP rebars with ribs. It is because that the high mix ratio may leads more voids in the ribs due to lower workability and formability. On the other hand, changing fiber type in the ribs from E-glass to AR-glass had no improvements on ISS strength of the GFRP rebar. Therefore, it is found that determination of proper mix ratio of milled glass fiber in the mixture for the formation of the ribs of the GFRP rebar is important.

  • Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars are sometimes used when corrosion of conventional reinforcing steel bar is of concern. In this study, a total of 36 beams and one-way slabs reinforced using GFRP bars were tested in flexure. Four different GFRP bars of 13 mm diameter were used in the test program. In most test specimens, the GFRP bars were lap spliced at center. All beams and slabs were tested under 4-point loads so that the spliced region be subject to constant moment. Test variables were splice lengths, cover thicknesses, and bar spacings. No stirrups were used in the spliced region so that the tests result in conservative bond strengths. Average bond stresses that develop between GFRP bars and concrete were determined through nonlinear analysis of the cross-sections. An average bond stress prediction equation was derived utilizing two-variable linear regression. A splice length equation based on 5% fractile concept was then developed. As a result of this study, a rational equation with which design splice lengths of the GFRP bars can be determined, was proposed.

  • In this experimental study, bond splitting strength and behavior were evaluated through pull-out tests. The tests were conducted on a GFRP rebar with roughened surface which was produced by Canadian manufacturer. The used variables in this study were rebar diameter, cover depth and compressive strength of concrete. For each variable, five specimens were made and tested to obtain good results. The bond splitting behavior was investigated from the relationship of pull-out force and slip. The experimental bond splitting strength was compared with the predicted strength obtained from the equations presented by some researchers. The results of the comparison demonstrated that the strength could be predicted well by using the Harajli et al's equation.

  • This study is to examine bond strength of beam reinforced with GFRP rebar under 4-point fatigue bending test by adopting BRITISH STANDARD. The variables were made to have bonding length of 5times(5db), and 15times(15db) of the nominal diameter of GFRP rebar and were done to analyze the relationship between the bonding strength and the slip. In the result of the test, pull-out failure was dominant in the 5db specimen, patterns of the pull-out failure and concrete shear failure appeared in the 15db specimen showed only concrete shear failure at the end of bonding length. Therefore, The strain development consist of three different stage : A rapid increases form 0 to about 10% of total fatigue life. A uniform increases form 10% to about 70%~90%. Then a rapid increases until failure, if failure takes place. It seems that stress level has not influence on the secant modules of elasticity. And also according to the outcome the existing strengthening method came out to be the most superiority in S-N graphs.
