  • Primary tumors of the parapharyngeal space are rare and account for only 0.5% of head and neck neoplasm. About 80% of parapharyngeal tumors are benign and 20% are malignant. Parapharyngeal space is classified into the Prestyloid space and the Poststyloid space. The Poststyloid tumors are usually benign lesions such as neurogenic tumors, paragangliomas, vascular tumors, or aneurisms. The origins of prestyloid tumors are much more diverse pathology, the pleomorphic adenoma in parotid deep lobe is most common type. Several surgical approaches have been introduced for management of parapharyngeal tumor, such as transcervical, transparotid-transcervical and the transcervical-transmandibular approaches. This paper is aimed to present a large parapharyngeal space tumor removed via transoral approach. It is possible to remove easier by using microdebrider. The pathologic diagnosis was pleomorphic adenoma.

  • Acetabular dysplasia is a condition defined by inadequate development of an individual's acetabulum. Individual diversity of the symptoms in this disease needs safe and accurate preoperative planning. Technologies that utilize multidimensional image information are thus important. The assessment method by Janzen et al. was suggested a coefficient method in evaluation of acetabular dysplasia. In this study, we applied it, using a three-dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) on the koreans. 19 cases of the normal hips and 4 cases of the acetabular dysplasia were investigated to evaluate the proved method; 3D CT was used to define the geometric center of the femoral head and to measure center edge angles at $10^{\circ}$ rotational increments around the acetabular rim. Mean and standard deviation in CEAs (Center Edge Angle) of normal 19 hips at $10^{\circ}$ rotational increments from anterior to posterior rim were determined, and termed as a 'normal curve'. Then this normal values were compared with the CEA data measured from 4 cases of acetabular dysplasia patiens. Quantative comparison of the CEA values between the normal cases and dysplasia cases was successfully demonstrated, and thus, we claim that this simple CT method of assessing acetabular dysplasia can be well applicable to diagnosis, quantification and surgical planning for adult acetabular dysplasia patients.

  • Two cases of human infection by Stellantchasmus falcatus (Heterophyidae) were identified by collection of adult worms during the treatment of some tapeworm infections in Korea. The cases were 24 (Case 1) and 55-year old (Case 2) males residing in Seoul. The Case 1 had gastrointestinal troubles such as diarrhea and abdominal pain, and heart problems such as palpitation and arrhythmia, revealing the eggs of Diphyllobothrium latum in the feces. The Case 2 complained indigestion and discharge of tapeworm (Taenia saginata) segments. Praziquantel at the dose of 15-20mg/kg body weight and 30 g magnesium salt were given to them for treatment of the tapeworm infections and the discharged strobilae were identified. However, concommitantly with the tapeworms, 188 and 5 specimens of S. falcatus were collected from Case 1 and Case 2 respectively through stereomicroscopy of the diarrheal stools. The Case 1 was infected also with 3 other kinds of heterophyid flukes. They said to have eaten raw brackish water fish such as mullets which are considered to be the source of heterophyid fluke infections.

  • The swimming crab, Portunus trituberculatus, inhabits seafloor habitats containing sand or pebbles and is widely distributed throughout the world. The present study investigated genetic polymorphisms of 10 microsatellites in 281 samples of P. trituberculatus collected from four locations along the coastal water of the Korean side of the Yellow Sea (Yeonggwang, Taean, Sorea, and Yeonpyeong-do Island). The number of alleles per locus ranged from 50 to 129, with a mean of 69.5. The observed and expected hetrozygosity varied from 0.111 to 1.000 and from 0.609 to 0.979, respectively. The inbreeding coefficients (Fis) varied among the loci from -0.0207 to 0.8175. The genetic differentiation (Fst) was less than 0.05 (range 0.0020-0.0124). Therefore, the four groups of P. trituberculatus appeared to exhibit little genetic differentiation. The lack of differentiation was confirmed in a phylogenetic tree constructed by the unweighted pair group method with the arithmetic average (UPGMA). The hypervariation between the populations and the lack of genetic differentiation may reflect active gene flow among the Yellow Sea populations and the absence of geographical boundaries. The highly polymorphic microsatellite loci will be useful for molecular and phylogenetic studies, as well as stock management, of swimming crab, which is an important fishery resource.
