  • Recent industrial requirements for highly precise shape processing have brought the electric discharge machining (EDM) in great need. High precision in EDM is primarily achieved by high performance controllers. However there exists inherent precision loss due to structural micro-deformation. On this background, we study structural deformation characteristics of wire cut EDM via finite element (FE) analysis and axiomatic design. Two different wire cut EDMs are selected as analysis models. 3D CAD package I-Deas is first used to construct FE models of wire cut EDMs, and then ABAQUS FE code is used for following structural analysis. Pertinency of FE mesh refinement is discussed in terms of η -factor. It is shown that performance accuracy of EDM depends strongly on the structural characteristics. Some design enhancements are suggested in an axiomatic design point of view. Finally we provide weight and temperature induced displacement discrepancies between wire end points as position functions of each subframe.

  • This paper presents the design considerations and field applications on inflatable structure system to protect rapidly flooding damages in large section tunnel. This inflatable structure system is very valuably used to protect passively and rapidly the possibilities of tunnel damages by flooding threats and unusual leakage to be occurred during and after underground infrastructure. In particular, this system should be necessary in subsea tunnel. The predominant factors in the design of inflatable structure system are the leakage and friction characteristics between the inflater and tunnel liner. The analytical and experimental studies are performed to develop the design considerations and to examine the design parameters of the inflatable structure system. The analytical solutions are developed using membrane theory to suggest the design considerations. The relative friction tests of several fabric materials are also carried out to determine the friction characteristics according to the different friction conditions between inflater and tunnel surface. The test results show that the friction coefficients in wet surface condition are about 20% lower than the values in dry surface condition. In addition, virtual design of tunnel protection system for two virtual subsea tunnel sites which is under reviewing in Korea, is carried out based on this research. It is expected that the results of this research will be very useful to understand the inflater structure design and development the technology of tunnel protection structures in the future.

  • In this study, the characteristics of filter that make up the automotive airbag system were analyzed. The gas pressure change of airbag is directly impacted by the filter. However, it is uncertain how much the design factors of filter affect the pressure of airbag. And it is difficult to access the pressure loss coefficient in the respect of characteristics of the airbag filter in the simulation method. To solve this problem, this study suggests pressure loss coefficient of the filter using simulation analysis. But it is impossible to interpret a sudden increase of pressure such as airbag filter. To solve this problem, by applying interpolation and scale down method, analysis was processed. Also, through the simulation interpretation of airbag filter's pressure loss coefficient, the guidelines for the filter design could be suggested.
