  • The developing Smart UAV in KARI supposes high speed flight as like a conventional plane, as well as vertical takeoff and landing as like a helicopter. Therefore, the air intake system should be designed to provide the sufficient air flow to the engine and the maximum possible total pressure recovery at the engine intake screen over a wide range of flight conditions. For this purpose, we designed the intake system using a pitor type intake model and plenum chamber. In this paper, we designed the intake model and analyzed the performance of designed intake system using the general-purpose commercial CFD code, CFD-ACE+. The analysis results of the total pressure variation and the velocity distribution were illustrated in this paper. The pressure recovery and distortion coefficient at a plane coincident with the compressor inlet were calculated and streamline variation through the intake system was investigated at the worst flight condition as well as the standard flight condition.

  • Impinging jets are observed when exhaust gases from missiles or V/STOL aircrafts impinge on the ground, flame deflector, ship deck, etc. The flow shows different patterns according to the nozzle geometry, nozzle-to-plate distance, and plate angle, for example. This paper describes experimental works on the phenomena (pressure distribution, occurrence of stagnation bubble, and so on.) when underexpanded supersonic jets impinge on a perpendicular flat plate using a supersonic cold-flow system, and compares the results with those obtained using a shock tunnel. The flow characteristics for the supersonic cold-flow system were also investigated. Surface pressure distribution of supersonic cold-flow system differed from that of shock tunnel because of water and temperature in the low-pressure chamber. Surface pressure distribution as to underexpanded ratio showed similar patterns together.

  • The helicopter flies at low level flight mode in its own operational range comparing to other aircraft categories. The low level flight means that the engine operates at variable atmospheric condition such as hot and cold temperature, snow, heavy rain, etc. Furthermore it may increase the entering possibility of engine foreign object damage particles like sand, dust, etc., i.e. this operating condition gives rise to damages of engine gas path components. An on-line condition monitoring program was developed by using SIMULINK, where measurement signals were simulated as an input module. The reliability and capability of the developed on-line condition monitoring were confirmed through application to a real helicopter engine health monitoring.

  • This paper describes establishment of a pilot training plan, training and an outcome for Human Powered Aircraft which can take off, landing and fly using the energy generated by only human muscle without using mechanical power. To achieve these, a special trainer made a plan by considering physical trait of each pilot and each pilot was performed an indoor training for principle physical improvement, an outdoor training for generating sustainable power, a simulation training to learn maneuver ability. The pilot mastered the basic maneuver ability needed to fly and each pilot was lose their weight and experienced their improved physical strength via the training.

  • The aim of this paper is to analyze handling qualities of tiltrotor aircraft(TR-S4) in helicopter flight mode including hovering and forward flight. Analysis of handling qualities is composed of aircraft response to control inputs that effect on stability and controllability. In short term response analysis, bandwidth is the critical parameter for small amplitude motions since it relates to the ability of a pilot to crisply start and stop maneuver. The handling qualities of TR-S4 in helicopter mode are analyzed with a SAS and an attitude controller and are satisfied level 1 in almost criteria with simulation of TR-S4 6-DOF nonlinear model.

  • Due to the rapid increase in air traffic worldwide, ICAO has replaced the existing navigation equipment with equipment based on satellite navigation. As a part of that work, ICAO was planning to replace conventional takeoff and landing service using ILS with GBAS. Unlike ILS, GBAS which uses precision approach service inducing aircraft to airport and satellite based augmentation system providing precise position information service surrounding airport is capable of providing a required performance by only a system, regardless of the number of systems, and has an advantage that it is possible curved approach. In this paper, fuel reduction of ILS approach procedures and GBAS curved approach procedures is estimated and determined by flight test in Taean Airport.

  • This paper illustrates how simulation modeling can be reduced of ground turbulence by the constructions in the vicinity of airport runway and reports on a cause of ground turbulence using two-dimensional CFD analysis. Interesting result is that the shape in cross-section show the higher ground turbulence than the height of the building. The predicted results confirmed reduction of wind-effect by doing that set up the building with a fence, terraced shape or gap and it can generate turbulence in embryo at this stage. We knows that cross-wind effect in the vicinity of airport runway is highly dependent on the shape of the buildings.

  • The number of international passengers at Gimhae International Airport, the fourth-largest airport in Korea, is gradually increasing. This raised the need for a new airport in southeastern region, and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport decided to build a new runway for Gimhae International Airport. In this study, to predict the noise generated by a new runway, the noise analysis using the aviation environmental design tool (AEDT) of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was performed. In this paper, when a new runway was built at the Gimhae International Airport, an area of noise damage that is increasing than the present was predicted using arrival and departure data of airlines in a day.

  • The flight test is last means of compliance to satisfy airworthiness standards and important to evaluate the performance and safety of the developed aircraft. The flight test technologies are obtained from great numbers of experiences and know-hows and protected. In addition, flight test should be conducted efficiently since its various test conditions and items. Therefore, it is requisite to secure efficient flight test methods. This paper discusses the flight test methods for take-off and landing performance and two kinds of techniques are proposed. By performing real flight tests, they are compared with each other and analyzed through the flight analysis.

  • Smart UAV, which adopting tiltrotor aircraft concept, requires vertical take-off and landing, long endurance and high speed capability. These contradictable flight performances are hard to meet unless the operation of flap system which should reveal optimal performance for each flight mode. In order to design SUAV flaperon satisfying the three performance requirements, various configurations are generated and their aerodynamic performances are analyzed using numerical flow computations around flap systems. Considering aerodynamic performance and structural simplicity, a final flap configuration is selected and the performance is validated through the wind tunnel testing for 40% scale model.
