A compression lap splice becomes an important issue due to development of ultra-high strength concrete. Based on the basic form of design equations for development lengths of deformed bars and hooks in tension, simplifed design equation of deformed bars in compression was proposed using regression analyses.
A compression lap splice can be calculated longer than a tension lap splice in high strength concrete according to current design codes. New criteria for the compression lap splice including the effects of concrete strength are required for practical purpose of ultra-high strength concrete. Characteristics of compression lap splice have been extensively investigated and main parameters are derived. In addition, an experimental study has been conducted with column specimens in concrete strength of 40 and 60 MPa. The strength of the compression lap splice consists of bond and end bearing and two contributors are combined. Therefore, combined action of bond and end bearing should be assessed. Compared with tension splices, concrete strength significantly affects the strength of compression splices due to short splice length and existence of end bearing. Test results show that the splice strength can be evaluated to be proportional to square root of compressive strength of concrete. The stress states of concrete surrounding spliced bars govern the strengths of bond and end bearing. Because the axial stress of the concrete is relatively high, the splice strength is not dependent on clear spacing. End bearing strength is not affected by splice length and clear spacing and is expressed with a function of the square root of concrete strength. The failure mode of specimens is similar to side-face blowout of pullout test of anchors and the strength of end bearing can be evaluated using the equation of side-face blowout strength. Because the stresses developed by bond in compression splices are nearly identical to those in tension splices, strength increment of compression splices is attributed to end bearing only.

This is a part of the extensive ongoing investigation being carried out by author to develop appropriate design procedure of the concrete member reinforced with FRP rebars instead of conventional steel rebars. This study presents the experimental results of a research programme to assess the structural characteristics of spliced rebar in reinforced concrete members with FRP reinforcement. The test variables are the diameter of FRP rebar and the embedment length. The development length (ld) was calculated according to the ACI 440 for FRP rebars in concrete. A total of 14 concrete beams reinforced with spliced FRP rebars and 4 reference beams reinforced with non-spliced FRP rebars were tested. The effects of bar size (10, 13, 16 and 19 mm) and splice length (from 0.72 to 1.58ld) on the bond strength were empirically evaluated. The test results indicate that a modification factor of 1.3 and 1.6 is relatively sufficient for the bond development length of glass FRP rebars in order to achieve an adequate tension lap splice length.

The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal distances between pipes to minimize the pressure loss and turbulent intensity. This was accomplished by investigating the distances between sleeve-jointed pipes and the flow changes in pipes based on variations in the Reynolds (Re) number when installing adjusting pieces for the pipes. When the thickness tp of the sleeve-jointed piping was fixed at 5 mm and the pipe lengths Lp were 10, 50, 100, and 200 mm, the correlations with the velocity of the sleeve-jointed part, pressure distribution, length of the reattachment point in the recirculation area, and Re number were analyzed. The flow characteristic of the sleeve-jointed part from a laminar to a turbulent flow region was determined by setting the Re range to 200 ≤ Re ≤ 5,000. This was done by utilizing Ansys Fluent 18.1, which is a commercial program. The enlargement and contraction ratios of the sleeve-jointed part were 1.2 and 0.83, respectively, and the turbulent intensity of the sleeve downstream edge and pressure change both increased as the Re number increased while Lp remained constant. The fact that the flow on the sleeve wall surface was disturbed by tp resulted in losses in velocity energy. Therefore, the edge of the sleeve-jointed part was also effected. When Lp was 10 mm or less, the turbulent intensity of the edge part did not change significantly as the Re number increased. The reattachment point in the recirculation area did not appear at Lp of 10 mm or less and was not affected by the vortex. In the case of 3,000 ≤ Re, the reattachment length of the wall surface of the sleeve-jointed part was nearly constant as Lp increased.

In this paper, a bending test was conducted on beams with two lap splice details when the effective depth of tensile high strength headed bars overlapped is the same and different. Through bending test, the lap splice performance of the high-strength headed bars was evaluated, and the applicability of the KDS-2021 design formula was evaluated. In the LS specimens with lap splice details where the high strength bars had the same effective depth, all specimens with 1.3 times or more of the development length of the KDS-2021 equation and 1 times or more of the ACI318-19 had the flexural failure mode after the ductile behavior to ensure sufficient lap splice performance. For specimens with details of lap joints between headed bars with different effective depth, when lap splice length is calculated by the KDS-2021 formula, the flexural stress may be transmitted so that the flexural strength at the cross section with the large effective depth and the cross section with the small effective depth becomes similar.

In this study, in order to improve the splice performance of mechanical couplers, two new mechanical couplers with different connection modes were developed with rebar(SD400). The stress analysis of mechanical couplers with two different connection modes was carried out. Uniaxial tensile tests were carried out with type of steel, connection mode and the slope length of internal fastener as variables to analyze the influence on the maximum tensile strength. Building upon this previous work, the specimens that met the code in uniaxial tensile test were fabricated and static loading test and cyclic loading test were performed on the basis of Korean code(KS D 0249). The results of this research are as follows; (1) The tensile strength of steel and the slope length of internal fasteners have a certain influence on the maximum tensile strength. (2) The connection mode has some influence on the stiffness, slip and stiffness reduction rate of the connecting rebars. The results verify the feasibility of the proposed enhanced mechanical coupler in the field.
Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars are sometimes used when corrosion of conventional reinforcing steel bar is of concern. In this study, a total of 36 beams and one-way slabs reinforced using GFRP bars were tested in flexure. Four different GFRP bars of 13 mm diameter were used in the test program. In most test specimens, the GFRP bars were lap spliced at center. All beams and slabs were tested under 4-point loads so that the spliced region be subject to constant moment. Test variables were splice lengths, cover thicknesses, and bar spacings. No stirrups were used in the spliced region so that the tests result in conservative bond strengths. Average bond stresses that develop between GFRP bars and concrete were determined through nonlinear analysis of the cross-sections. An average bond stress prediction equation was derived utilizing two-variable linear regression. A splice length equation based on 5% fractile concept was then developed. As a result of this study, a rational equation with which design splice lengths of the GFRP bars can be determined, was proposed.

This study examines the bending behavior of lap-spliced ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced concrete members and evaluates the safety of the design codes for ultra-high-strength fiber-reinforced concrete structures. An experiment on a total of six beams was performed. The main variables were the fiber-inclusion and the lap-spliced length at the center of the beams. The steel fibers in a volume fraction of 2% were used, and the lap-splice lengths were determined to be 8db and 16db. As a result of the test, the specimens not reinforced with fiber lost abrupt load-bearing capacity at the lap region and did not experience yielding of the reinforcing bar. In the case of fiber-reinforced concrete, if a lap-splice length of 16db is secured, the yielding of the main reinforcing bar can be experienced, and appropriate flexural strength can be expressed. Based on the experimental results of this study, as a result of reviewing the lap-splice length calculation formulas of the current design standards and the ultra-high-strength concrete structural design recommendations, it was found that all of them were evaluated conservatively.

In precast deck system, structural performance and serviceability are mostly determined by the connection methods between the precast decks. This study proposes precast deck system with asymmetric ribbed connection details using High Strength Fiber Reinforced Concrete(HSFRC) with filler. To verify the proposed method, the flexural performance experiment was carried out with variation of joint cross section type and splice rebar details. From the test results, regardless of joint details, spliced tensile rebars of specimens were deformed to yielding strain level. Also, all types of specimens resulted in sufficient flexural performance. These test results show that the minimum lap splice length specified in current Korea Highway Bridge Design Code is conservative for precast deck joint using HSFRC. Therefore, splice details can be simplified and joint width can be reduced by using HSFRC with filler between the precast decks, and the proposed precast deck systems can be applied to the connection part of precast decks effectively.

Column specimens were constructed with main parameters significantly affecting the strength of the compression lap splice, such as lap length, spacing of lapped bars, amount and location of transverse reinforcements, and concrete strength. An experimental study has been conducted with column specimens in concrete strength of 40 to 60 MPa. Diameters of lapped reinforcing bars are 22 mm. An axial load was monotonically applied to the column specimens. All specimens failed in a brittle sudden manner and cover concrete was blasted out at maximum load. Compression lap splice strengths of specimens were evaluated from strains measured at the beginning of the lap length. Effects of the main parameters on the strengths of compression lap splice are assessed. Similarly to strengths of tension lap slice, the compression splice strength is found to be affected by lap length, spacing of lapped bars, transverse reinforcements.
