  • In this study, we research the influence of butt-welded joints in high tension bolted joints on the static and fatigue strength. As a results, if it's located inside or outside of the friction surface, the fatigue strength decrease, and the decrease of fatigue strength is greater in cases that the butt-welded joints exist outside of the friction surface. But the influence of butt-welded joint on the fatigue strength satisfies category B of the Specifications.

  • In designing a high strength bolted beam splice using steel for building structures, it is necessary to present the appropriate steel grade selection criteria for how to determine the cover plate steel grade. This study examined the difference in tensile behavior according to the steel grades through static tensile tests simulating the beam member high strength bolt joints flange. For this purpose, the specimens were designed and fabricated with the main variables, such as the thickness, steel grade and the strength of flange and cover plate, which are expected to affect the splice strength and behavior. The tensile test results for a total of 48 specimens showed that the tensile-load capacity exceeded the design tensile strength applied with a nominal strength of steel in all specimens. When the design strength of the cover plate exceeded 1.25 times that of the flange plate, the flange plate governed the behavior of splice. The change in maximum tensile load due to the change in flange steel grade is not very large, but there is a difference in deformation. The test results confirmed that the steel grade and thickness of the cover plate were the main factors affecting the beam splice behavior.

  • The paper presented results of the strength distributions and tension failure behaviors of splices subjected to tension forces. The bolting patterns in the tension splices are regular and staggered patterns in the research. The finite element analyses were carried out to examine the experimental results and evaluated the stress distribution patterns. The yield stresses, maximum tension stresses, stress distribution ratios, and effective net areas were analyzed through the tension experiments.

  • Performance improvement of helical piles in static load tests using hexagon joints that do not require welding or bolting was investigated. Two sites were selected for pile field tests to evaluate their bearing capacity. Static and pull-out load tests were undertaken to assess the method for estimating bearing capacity. The field tests indicated that the bearing capacity of the gravity grout pile was ≥600 kN in the static load test, consistent with the AC 358 Code. The non-grout pile had a bearing capacity of ≤600 kN, suggesting that gravity grouting is required. Field pile load-test results were used to establish the bearing capacity equation, based on a small number of helical pile.

  • Steel Plate for Rebar Connection was recently developed to splice rebars in delayed slab-wall joints in high-rise building, slurry wall-slab joints, temporary openings, etc. It consists of several couplers and a thin steel plate with shear key. Cyclic loading tests on slab-wall joints were conducted to verify structural behavior of the joints having Steel Plate for Rebar Connection. For comparison, joints with Rebend Connection and without splices were also tested. The joints with Steel Plate for Rebar Connection showed typical flexural behavior in the sequence of tension re-bar yielding, sufficient flexural deformation, crushing of compression concrete, and compression rebar buckling. However, the joints with Rebend Connection had more bond cracks in slabs faces and spalling in side cover-concrete, even though elastic behavior of the joints was similar to that of the joints with Steel Plate for Re-bar Connection. Consequently, the joints with Rebend Connection had less strengths and deformation capacities than the joints with Steel Plate for Re-bar Connection. In addition, stiffness of the joints with Rebend Connection degraded more rapidly than the other joints as cyclic loads were applied. This may be caused by low elastic modulus of re-straightened rebars and restraightening of kinked bar. For two types of diameters (13mm and 16mm) and two types of grades (SD300 and SD400) of rebars, the joints with Steel Plate for Rebar Connection had higher strength than nominal strength calculated from actual material properties. On the contrary, strengths of the joints with Rebend Connection decreased as bar diameter increased and as grade becames higher. Therefore, Rebend Connection should be used with caution in design and construction.

  • Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars are sometimes used when corrosion of conventional reinforcing steel bar is of concern. In this study, a total of 36 beams and one-way slabs reinforced using GFRP bars were tested in flexure. Four different GFRP bars of 13 mm diameter were used in the test program. In most test specimens, the GFRP bars were lap spliced at center. All beams and slabs were tested under 4-point loads so that the spliced region be subject to constant moment. Test variables were splice lengths, cover thicknesses, and bar spacings. No stirrups were used in the spliced region so that the tests result in conservative bond strengths. Average bond stresses that develop between GFRP bars and concrete were determined through nonlinear analysis of the cross-sections. An average bond stress prediction equation was derived utilizing two-variable linear regression. A splice length equation based on 5% fractile concept was then developed. As a result of this study, a rational equation with which design splice lengths of the GFRP bars can be determined, was proposed.

  • In this study, a non-linear FEM model is presented to predict the static flexural performance of precast bridge decks with ribbed joint and is verified with previous experiment results through comparison. The several theory of material properties were applied to each mechanical properties in FEM model and FEM model's input variables were determined through experiment result and parametric study. The FEM results showed good accuracy in predicting the structural performance of the specimens and FEM model's average error rate was 5%. Also, each specimen's cracking aspect and failure mode can be predicted through FEM's plastic strain distribution. Thus, this FEM model can be used effectively for predicting the ultimate behavior and parametric study to development of design formula for joint.

  • To evaluate the mechanical behavior and the compressive stress distribution in high tension bolted joints according to the size of bolt hole, the experimental and analytical studies are performed with enlarging bolt hole size. In experimental study, the static test is performed to measure the slip coefficient, and the fatigue test is also performed to evaluate the fatigue strength and failure pattern of fatigue crack. In analytical study, the compressive stress distribution is investigated by using the finite element analysis. From the result of experimental study, the slip coefficient and fatigue strength of the high tension bolted joints with oversize hole are not much different but somewhat it has decreased. These are because the size of bolt hole is larger than the holes of nominal size, therefore the width of clamping force is decreased and the compressive stress distribution area is smaller, this is certificated in the finite element analysis. In addition, the origin of fatigue crack in the oversize holes is closer to the hole than in the holes of nominal size, consequently it is investigated that the origin of fatigue crack is intimately associated with the compressive stress distribution which is formulated by the clamping force in both base metal and splice plate.

  • The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. However, in order to apply the precast panels to bridges properly, it is necessary to fully understand the structural characteristics of joint in precast panels. Particularly, since the bridge deck is under repeated loads such as traffic loads, fatigue behavior and characteristics of joint should be investigated. In this paper, fatigue tests of composite deck with shear ties and loop joints were conducted. The fatigue tests were conducted with an application of repeated loading and wheel loading. Test results were analyzed to examine the current design code for fatigue of reinforcement bar and serviceability under repeated loading.
