  • $Li_2Sr_{1-x}Eu_xSiO_{4-{\alpha}}N_{\alpha}$ ($Li_2SrSiO_{4-{\alpha}}N_{\alpha}:Eu^{2+}$) phosphors were synthesized by using a solid state reaction (SSR) method with submicron $Si_3N_4$ and nano $Si_3N_4$ powders as the sources of Si and N, and the optical properties of those phosphors were studied. The studied phosphors showed efficient excitation characteristics over the broad range from 230 to 530 nm. Also, They showed broad emission spectra covering a range from 500 to 700 nm, with a peak at 568 nm, which was shifted longer wavelength by 18 nm as compared with that of commercial $YAG:Ce^{3+}$. Combined with a 450 nm blue LED chip, the results support the application of the $Li_2SrSiO_{4-{\alpha}}N_{\alpha}:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor as a luminescent material for a white-light source thaat is warmer than the commercial $YAG:Ce^{3+}$ white-light source. In addition, the $Li_2SrSiO_{4-{\alpha}}N_{\alpha}$ phosphors prepared from a submicron $Si_3N_4$ powder was found to emit a previously unreported self-activated luminescence in $Li_2SrSiO_{4-{\alpha}}N_{\alpha}$.

  • Adsorption characteristics of carbol fuchsin (CF) dye by coal-based activated carbon (CAC) were investigated using pH, initial concentration, temperature and contact time as adsorption variables. CF dissociates in water to have a cation, NH2+, which is bonded to the negatively charged surface of the activated carbon in the basic region by electrostatic attraction. Under the optimum condition of pH 11, 96.6% of the initial concentration was adsorbed. Isothermal adsorption behavior was analyzed using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. Langmuir's equation was the best fit for the experimental results. Therefore, the adsorption mechanism was expected to be adsorbed as a monolayer on the surface of activated carbon with a uniform energy distribution. From the evaluated Langmuir's dimensionless separation coefficients (RL = 0.503~0.672), it was found that CF can be effectively treated by activated carbon. The adsorption energies determined by Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich models were E = 15.31~7.12 J/mol and B = 0.223~0.365 kJ/mol, respectively. Therefore, the adsorption process was physical (E < 20 J/mol, B < 8 kJ/mol). The experimental result of adsorption kinetics fit better the pseudo second order model. In the adsorption reaction of CF dye to CAC, the negative free energy change increased as the temperature increased. It was found that the spontaneity also increased with increasing temperature. The positive enthalpy change (40.09 kJ/mol) indicated an endothermic reaction.

  • Antibiotics are compounds broadly used to treat patients with infectious diseases and to enhance productivity in agriculture, fisheries, and livestock industries. However, due to the overuse of antibiotics and their low biodegradability, a substantial amount of antibiotics is leaking into the sewer, subsequently resulting in pollution and the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This study explores biodegradable serum albumin's potential as an adsorbent to remove antibiotics from water. Serum albumin is a natural blood protein that transports various metabolites and hormones to all tissues' extravascular spaces. While serum albumin is highly water-soluble, it has intrinsic binding sites which readily accommodate ionic, hydrophilic, or hydrophobic molecules, rendering it a good building block for a nano-adsorbent. To induce coacervation, a desolvating agent, ethanol, was added dropwise into the aqueous albumin solution, resulting in dehydration and liquid-liquid phase separation of albumins into albumin nanoparticles within a size range of 150 ~ 170 nm. The addition of glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker improved the size stability and homogeneity of albumin nanoparticles. Adsorption of amoxicillin antibiotics on albumin nanoparticles was dependent upon glutaraldehyde concentration used in desolvation and pH during adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity measured by spectrophotometry was found to be 12.4 micrograms of amoxicillin per milligram of albumin nanoparticle. These results demonstrate serum albumin's potential as a building block for fabricating a natural nano-adsorbent to remove antibiotics from water.

  • Silicon (Si) is the second most abundant element in the crust and consists of three stable isotopes, 28Si (92.23%), 29Si (4.67%), and 30Si (3.10%). Si isotopes are widely studied worldwide as a proxy for the biogeochemical cycle of Si to reconstruct the paleoenvironment and paleoclimate. However, in Korea, there have been no studies on biogenic silica using Si isotopes. In this study, we carried out Si isotope measurements of giant diatoms, summarizing the previously reported alkali fusion methods and establishing the best Si separation method for biogenic silica. Samples were completely digested using alkali fusion at high temperatures, effectively separating Si using an AG® 50W-X8 cation exchange resin. To evaluate the precision and accuracy of our measurements, Si isotope standard material (NBS-28) and USGS reference materials (AGV-2, GSP-2, BHVO-2) were analyzed. The results are in excellent agreement with the reported values within the acceptable error. The Si isotope measurement method developed in this study is expected to help in understanding the paleoclimate and paleoenvironment by tracing the Si cycle.

  • Numerous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) produced by periodic combinations of organic ligands and metal ions or metal-oxo clusters have led the way for the creation of energy-efficient membrane-based separations that may serve as viable replacements for traditional thermal counterparts. Although tremendous progress has been made over the past decade in the synthesis of polycrystalline MOF membranes, only a small number of MOFs have been exploited in the relevant research. Intercrystalline defects, or nonselective diffusion routes in polycrystalline membranes, are likely the reason behind the delay. Postsynthetic modifications (PSMs) are newly emerging strategies for providing polycrystalline MOF membrane diversity by leveraging advanced membranes as a platform and improving their separation capabilities via physical and/or chemical treatments; therefore, neither designing and developing MOFs nor tailoring membrane synthesis techniques for focused MOFs is necessary. In this minireview, seven subclasses of PSM techniques that have recently been adapted to polycrystalline MOF membranes are outlined, along with obstacles and future directions.

  • The use of lithium-ion batteries increases significantly with the rapid spread of electronic devices and electric vehicle and thereby an increase in the amount of waste batteries is expected in the near future. Therefore, studies are continuously being conducted to recover various resources of cathode active material (Ni, Co, Mn, Li) from waste battery. In order to recover the cathode active material, black mass is generally recovered from waste battery. The general process of recovering black mass is a waste battery collection - discharge - dismantling - crushing - classification process. This study focus on the crushing/classification process among the processes. Specifically, the particle size distribution of various samples at each crushing/classification step were evaluated, and the particle shape of each particle fraction was analyzed with a microscope and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy)-EDS(Energy Dispersive Spectrometer). As a result, among the black mass particle, fine particle less than 74 ㎛ was the mixture of cathode and anode active material which are properly liberated from the current metals. However, coarse particle larger than 100 ㎛ was present in a form in which the current metal and active material were combined. In addition, this study developed a PBM(Population Balance Model) system that can simulate two-species mixture sample with two different crushing properties. Using developed model, the breakage parameters of two species was derived and predictive performance of breakage distribution was verified.

  • Nano-sized ZnO crystals were successfully incorporated using ion exchange method in TMA-A zeolite synthesized by the hydrothermal method. The optimal composition for the synthesis of TMA-A zeolite was resulted in a solution of $Al(i-pro)_3$ : 2.2 TEOS : 2.4 TMAOH : 0.3 NaOH : 200 $H_2O$. 0.3 g of TMA-A zeolite and 5 mol of $ZnCl_2$ solution were employed for the preparation of ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite. The crystallization process of ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The incorporated nano-sized ZnO crystals and the crystallinity of TMA-A zeolite were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The size of the incorporated nano-sized ZnO crystals was 3~5 nm, while the TMA-A zeolite was 60~100 nm. The bonding structure and absorption of the ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite were compared with the ZnO and TMA-A zeolite by the FT-IR analysis. Subsequentlly, the ZnO incorporated TMA-A zeolite showed the photoluminescent characteristics on the wavelengths of 330~260 nm and 260~230 nm by measurement of UV spectrophotometer.

  • Mushroom consumption is gradually growing annually worldwide for many centuries. Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus), button mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus), and enokitake (Flammulina filiformis) are mainly consumed in Korea. However, mushrooms can be contaminated with pathogenic microorganisms, such as Listeria monocytogenes, because antibacterial treatment during mushroom cultivation and processing is insufficient. Therefore, many cases of mushroom contamination-related foodborne illnesses and food recalls have been reported. Three representative treatments are used to prevent microbial contamination in mushrooms: chemical, physical, and combination treatments. Among the chemical treatments, chlorine compounds, peroxyacetic acid, and quaternary ammonium compounds are commercially used and ozone and electrolyzed water has recently been used. Additionally, physical treatments, including ultrasound, irradiation, and cold plasma, are being developed. Combination techniques include ultraviolet/chlorine compounds, ozone/organic acid, and ultrasound/organic acid. This review describes the domestically consumed mushroom types and their characteristics, and investigates the mushroom contamination levels. Additionally, effective antibacterial technologies for reducing microbial contamination in mushrooms are also discussed.

  • Predicting water quality of rivers and reservoirs is necessary for the management of water resources. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been used in many studies to predict water quality with high accuracy. Previous studies have used Gradient Descent (GD)-based optimizers as an optimizer, an operator of ANN that searches parameters. However, GD-based optimizers have the disadvantages of the possibility of local optimal convergence and absence of a solution storage and comparison structure. This study developed improved optimizers to overcome the disadvantages of GD-based optimizers. Proposed optimizers are optimizers that combine adaptive moments (Adam) and Nesterov-accelerated adaptive moments (Nadam), which have low learning errors among GD-based optimizers, with Harmony Search (HS) or Novel Self-adaptive Harmony Search (NSHS). To evaluate the performance of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) using improved optimizers, the water quality data from the Dasan water quality monitoring station were used for training and prediction. Comparing the learning results, Mean Squared Error (MSE) of LSTM using Nadam combined with NSHS (NadamNSHS) was the lowest at 0.002921. In addition, the prediction rankings according to MSE and R2 for the four water quality indices for each optimizer were compared. Comparing the average of ranking for each optimizer, it was confirmed that LSTM using NadamNSHS was the highest at 2.25.

  • Crystallographic and magnetic properties for Brownmillerite-type oxides $Ca_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$FeO$_{2.5}$ (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0) were investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Polycrystalline samples were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction method. Information on exact crystalline structures, lattice parameters, bond lengths and bond angles were obtained by refining their XRD profiles using a Rietveld method. The crystal structures were found to be all orthorhombic with space group Icmm (x = 0, 0.3) and Icmm (x = 0.5, 0.7, 1.0) The lattice parameters increased monotonically with increasing Sr concentration. Both the tetrahedral and the octahedral sites were considerably distorted and elongated along b-axis. While bond lengths and bond angles O-Fe-O tend to increase minutely with the increase of Sr content, bond angles Fe-O-Fe decreased accordingly. The Mossbauer spectra showed two sets of sharp sextets originating from ferric ions occupying the tetrahedral and the octahedral sites under the magnetic transition temperature T$_{N}$. Regardless of the compositions x, the electric quadrupole splittings were -0.3 mm/s and 0.4 mm/s for the octahedral and the tetrahedral site, respectively. Above T$_{N}$, the Mossbauer spectra showed the paramagnetic doublets whose electric quadrupole splittings were about 1.6 mm/s, irrespective of compositions x. T$_{N}$ was found to decrease monotonically with the increase of Sr concentration. Ratios of absorption area for the two sites were almost 1:1 up to as high as 0.95 T$_{N}$ for all x. The result of the Debye temperature indicated that the inter-atomic binding force for the Fe atoms in the tetrahedral site was stronger than that for the octahedral site.hedral site.
