  • In order to continuously perform quarantine in public places, it is not easy to secure manpower, but using self-driving-based robots can solve problems caused by manpower. Self-driving-based quarantine robots can continuously prevent the spread of harmful viruses and diseases in public institutions and hospitals without additional manpower. The location of the autonomous driving function was estimated by applying the Pinnacle filter algorithm, and the UV sterilization system and chlorine dioxide injection system were applied for quarantine. The driving time is more than 3 hours and the position error is 0.5m.Soon, the stop-avoidance function was operated at 95% and the obstacle detection distance was 1.5 m, and the automatic charge recovery was charged by moving to the charging cradle at the remaining 10% of the battery capacity. As a result of quarantine with an unmanned quarantine system, UV sterilization is 99% and chlorine dioxide is sterilized more than 95%, which can contribute to reducing enormous social costs.

  • Chlorine dioxide has an excellent ability to sterilize and deodorize and is harmless to humans. However, it is very unstable and explosive as it is highly concentrated, thus its use in the air clean filed has been limited. Therefore, there is a demand to develop the system to produce a low concentration of chlorine dioxide sustainedly. Here, for a first step in the development of the system on the sustained production of chlorine dioxide, the use of polymer hydrogels was investigated. P(MMA-co-HEMA) hydrogel particles were prepared via dispersion photopolymerization and sodium chlorite and citric acid were loaded respectively in the hydrogel particles. When sodium chlorite and citric acid were reacted with not loaded in the hydrogels, rapid production of chlorine dioxide occurred and the concentration of chlorine dioxide decreased over time. However, when sodium chlorite and citric acid were loaded respectively in the hydrogel particles and reacted, chlorine dioxide was produced slowly and sustainedly because the release of sodium chlorite and citric acid from the hydrogels delayed the reaction between them. The result shows that the use of P(MMA-co HEMA) hydrogels has the potential to develop the system on the sustained production of chlorine dioxide.

  • Heart contraction is essential for insect hemolymph circulation, in which various physiological changes need control of the heart contraction. Thus, interruption of heartbeats intimidate insect survival. Chlorine dioxide induces release of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which has been regarded as the main insecticidal agent. This study analyzed the effect of chlorine dioxide on heartbeats of the Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella. The larvae have the dorsal vessel on the medial dorsal region in a form of an extending tube from the first thorax to 10th abdominal segment. Dorsal vessel contraction was noticeable between 3rd and 10th abdominal segments, where five heart chambers were observed. Average heartbeat rate was 118.6 beats per min at $25^{\circ}C$. However, the heartbeats varied with ambient temperature. Injection of chlorine dioxide to hemocoel suppressed the heartbeats in a dose-dependent manner. The suppressive effect of chlorine dioxide also increased with exposure time to gas form of the chemical at 100 ppm. However, vitamin E (an antioxidant against ROS) treatment significantly rescued the larvae treated with chlorine dioxide in the heart contraction activity. These results suggest that chlorine dioxide negatively influences on the heart contraction of P. interpunctella via its production of ROS.

  • A method for detecting chlorine dioxide in drinking water was developed by the modified iodometric titration. This method requires prior removal of interfering chemicals such as chlorine and/or other oxidants: the interferents are removed by $N_2$ purging. Chlorite and chlorate were successfully quantified by the ion chromatography-conductivity detection. Stabilized chlorine dioxide that is commercially available contained only traces of chlorine dioxide (0.01-0.09%). In reality, its main component is chlorite.

  • Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is widely used for post-harvest sterilization treatment. However, there are limitations in the retail application of ClO2 due to difficulties in handling, expensive facilities, and safety concerns. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a ClO2 technology that can be easily applied and continuously released for a long period. In this study, a series of ClO2 self-releasing sachets were developed. First, poly(ether-block-amide) (PEBAX) and polyethylene-glycol (PEG) composite films containing different ratios of citric acid (CA) were prepared using the solution casting method. The as-prepared PEBAX/PEG-CA composite films were evaluated using FT-IR, DSC, and TGA to confirm chemical structure and thermal properties. Subsequently, PEBAX/PEG-CA composite films were designed in the form of a sachet and NaClO2 powder was transferred into the sachet to achieve a ClO2 self-releasing system. The ClO2-releasing behavior of the sachet was investigated by measuring the release amount of the gas using UV-vis. The release amount of ClO2 increased with increasing CA contents owing to the existence of higher protons (trigger) in the polymer matrix. Further, ClO2 gas was released for a longer time. Therefore, the as-prepared smart sachet can be tuned according to applications and packaging sizes to serve an optimal sterilization effect.

  • In water treatment, prechlorination is often carried out to solve the troubles caused by Algae, but produces by-products that are known to be harmfull to human health. In this study, chlorine and chlorine dioxide used for algae removal process were compared in producing trihalomethanes and haloacetonitriles to study the possibilities in using chlorine dioxide as a alternative for chlorine. The raw water used for the study had 10,790 algae cells per one milliliter and Ankistrodesmus sp. were the most common.
