  • Stress and displacement fields of a propagating Mode III crack in an orthotropic functionally gradient material (OFGM), which has (1) linear variation of shear modulus with a constant density, and (2) an exponential variation of shear modulus and density, are derived. The equations of motion in OFGM are developed and solution to the displacement and stress fields fer a propagating crack at constant speed though an asymptotic analysis. The stress terms associated with $\gamma^{-1/2}\;and\;\gamma^{0}$ are not affected by the FGM constant $\zeta$ which is nonhomogeneous parameter, only on the higher order terms, the influences of nonhomogeneity on the stress are explicitly brought out. When the FGM constant $\zeta\;is\;zero\;or\;\gamma{\rightarrow}0$, the fields for OFGM are almost same as the those for homogeneous orthotropic material. Using the stress components, the effects of nonhomogeneity on stress components are discussed.

  • Geometries, boundary renditions, loading renditions and mechanical properties are essential for finite element analysis. However it is a very difficult task to obtain In-vivo geometry and mechanical properties of human body. In this study totally 38 kinds of inner organs are segmented using MRI of young male with Korean standard body shape to make a finite element model. And RUS has been used to acquire anisotropic elasticity matrix of the femoral head.

  • This study is to clarify the comparative relationship and a mechanical anisotropy of rock on the subject of granite distributed in the Namwon area Uniaxial compressive and Brazilian strengths with respect to the horizontal and vertical axes of granite are shown the linear relation. In the case of the result of the p-wave velocity measurement. it is represented that the velocity of vortical direction is faster about 10 to 15% than other two horizontal directions. The difference between velocities is caused by a developmental pattern of microcracks distributed in rock. Moreover, this result is very consistent with the result investigated through thin sections. The proportion of uniaxial compression strength to Index of point load strength ($Is_{(50)}$) is 18~20 times in case of granite. Uniaxial compressive strength is relatively good relationship with point load strength, Schmidt hammer rebound value, and tensile strength point load strength of them is the best comparative relationship. It is indicated that point load test is the most useful tool to estimate uniaxial compressive strength, comparing with other experimental methods.

  • For the electro-discharge machining of an electro-conductive anisotropic composite, an unsteady state formulation was established and solved by Galerkin's finite element method. The distribution of temperature on work piece, the shape of the crater and the material removal rate were obtained in terms of the process parameters. The $12{\times}12$ irregular mesh that was chosen as the optimum in the previous analysis was used for computational accuracy and efficiency. A material having the physical properties of alumina/titanium carbide composite was selected and an electricity with power of 51.4 V and current of 7 A was applied, assuming the removal efficiency of 10 % and the thermal anisotropic factors of 2 and 3. As the spark was initiated the workpiece immediately started to melt and the heat affected zone was formed. The moving boundary of the crater was also identified with time. When the radial and axial conductivities were increased separately, the temperature distribution and the shape of the crater were shifted in the radial and axial directions, respectively. The material removal rate was found to be higher when the conductivity was increased in the radial direction rather than in the axial direction.

  • Reinforced braid layer (RBL) in automobile power steering hose plays an important role in power steering system. When the working oil is applied to the power steering hose, RBL suppresses rubber hose deformation from internal pressure and heat expansion. RBL is woven textile composites having a double-row structure of nylon cords twisted with the specific helix angle. In this paper, effective material properties of RBL are estimated using a detailed 3-D finite element model considering its complicated geometry. Numerical experiments based on a superposition method are carried out to simulate uniaxial tensile loading condition.

  • In this study, scaled model tests were performed to investigate the deformation behaviors around tunnels located in anisotropic rocks. Fifteen types of test models which had respectively different joint angles and rock pressure conditions were made, where the modelling materials were the mixture of sand, plaster and water. All of the tested models showed the shear failure mechanism at the stress-concentrated regions and sliding phenomena according to the joint planes. The direction of joint inclination turned out to have great effect on the tunnel deformation behaviors. The models of joint inclination less than $30^{\circ}$ showed considerable floor heavings. The model of $50^{\circ}$ joint inclination showed the least tunnel convergence among the tested models regardless of rock pressure condition, so that it was thought as the most stable model. Furthermore, the failure mechanisms and deformation behaviors of tunnel models were strongly dependent on the coefficient of rock pressure.

  • The initiation and growth of microcracks or microvoids inside concrete results in the progressive degradation of concrete. This damage processing along processing along with plastic deformation is main cause of nonlinear behavior of concrete. In this study, a continuum damage model of concrete is developed for the analysis of the nonlinear behavior of concrete due to damage and elasto-plastic deformation. Anisotropic damage tensor is used to describe the anisotropy of concrete and hypothesis of equivalent elastic energy is used to define the effective elastic tensor. The damage model including the damage evolution law and constitutive equation is derived with damage variable and damage surface which is defined by damage energy release rate by using the Helmholtz free energy and dissipation potential based on the thermodynamic principles. By adopting a typical plasticity model of concrete, plasticity of concrete is included to this model. Afinite element analysis program implemented with this model was developed and finite element analysis was performed for the analyses of concrete subjected to uniaxial and biaxial loadings. Comparison of the results of analysis with those of experiments and other models shows that the model successfully predicts the nonlinear behavior of concrete.

  • Free vibration characteristics of laminated orthotropic circular cylindrical shells with clamped free boundary condition are investigated. The solution is obtained through a direct solution procedure with axial mode displacements represented as simple Fourier series expressions. On the basis of the thin shell theories of Sanders, Love, Loo, Morley and Donnell, the 4*$ frequency determinant is derived and is expressed in a unified form. Various numerical examples determining the natural frequencies of circular cylindrical shells with isotropic material and also with layers of orthotropic elastic material arbitraily laminated either symmetrically or anti-symmetrically about the shell middle surface. The results obtained compared very well with some available experimental and numerical results.

  • In this research, biomechanical characteristics of the bone tissue are experimentally investigated. By using specimens of the bovine bone, the mechanical properties are obtained through tension and shear tests. In experiments, non-homogeneous and anisotropic properties with respect to longitudinal and transversal directions are observed. Moreover, the viscoelastic behavior in which modulus and strength properties are dependent on strain rates is analyzed. It is expected that a numerical damage model of the bone be efficiently established based on the results.

  • This study is a comparison of the results of the orthropic material analysis at cantilever beam model using boundary element(BEM) method and finite element method(FEM). The program with the orthotropic material analysis was developed and applied to the examples in order to evaluate the accuracy of the programs. The examples shows that the results of the BEM is a good agreement with the ABAQUS results.
