A Study of the Usage and Sizing Selecting of the Apparels listed in On-line and Catalog Shopping (온라인 및 카탈로그 통신판매 의류 이용현황 및 치수선택에 대한 연구)

  • This study is aimed at investigating and developing the use and sizing system of the apparels listed in on-line and catalog shopping in Korea. This is a basic study for an apparel sizing system to be developed, which could be used to approach consumers more easily and provide improved fitness and accuracy in terms of size and style of apparels for fashion E-commerce. A survey was conducted among the consumers who are more than 18-years-old and purchased more than two times the apparels listed in on-line and catalog shopping of two selected catalog shopping enterprises, and its statistical results are analysed from 281 respondents' questionnaires. The results of the study are as follows: 1. According to the result of the survey on the use and sizing system of the apparels listed in. on-line and catalog shopping, the consumers who purchased once apparels continue doing so in the same manner. A catalog shopping is the most preferred form of shopping. The most dissatisfying part in purchasing apparels is a poor quality of 'texture', and the second biggest problem is about 'size'About 51.2 percent of the apparels were not worn or even returned, while the top reason for that is 'Inappropriate size' and 'color', and 'texture'comes next on the list. 2. According to the survey on the recognition-rate concerning common' body size, most respondents were aware of their height and weight, and So percent of respondents said that they were aware of their waist circumference. But, chest circumference and hip circumference were recognized only by 58.4 percent and 35.6 percent of respondents, respectively. 3. According to the survey on difference between men and women, the male consumers have less aware of hip circumference than the female counterparts. The females have much more dissatisfaction with apparel sizing system and show higher return-rate of purchased apparels than the males.

  • This study is aimed at the application of the apparel size system to be applied for the Internet shopping mall in Korea. Especially this is focused on the presumption of the body measurement according to the age groups and the figure groups. In this regard, a sizing system is to be developed that could be used to approach consumers more easily and provide more fitness and accuracy in terms of size. The target study was on a group of women nineteen to forty-nine years of age. The 4th National Anthropometry Survey data were used in the examination. The results in the study are as follows ; (1) On the Internet apparel shopping malls in relation with this study, no matter what size in the ready-to-wear enterprises was selected by the consumers who once put their information in the member registration, the most appropriate sizes for them are automatically given and transferred to the order forms of chosen enterprises with aid of internal programs of the internet webpage. In addition, when consumers enter their body sizes in the units that are familiar to them, such as inches or centimeters, the units are automatically programed so that they can be converted for the sake of convenience. ; (2) To extract an estimation equation of body size through Multiple Regression Analysis, the circumferences of chest and hip could be presumed by stature, weight, and waist circumference of which most consumers were well aware. For more accurate regression equations, groupings were made in the three categories of age(19∼29/30∼39/40∼49) and in the three body types(Type N, A and H). Then, the regression equations were established for three sectors, $\circled1$ 'chest circumference not filled up', $\circled2$ 'hip circumference not filled up' and $\circled3$ 'neither filled up for chest nor for hip circumference'.     • The purpose of this study is to suggest the standard size specification of the apparel item as finding out apparel products'sizing problem in the domestic and foreign interned shopping malls. Though that, to suggest basic data of web page offered sizing system given to consumer higher satisfaction and based on ISO (International Organization For Standardization), domestic industry standard and service related size. The summarized findings are as follow. 1. The result of size description research, the size description system between internet site were very different, in addition in the department shopping malls it was different by manufacturing industry. Also in domestic and foreign shopping malls, It was not correspond to ISO and domestic industry standard, used Numeric and Alphabetical size. In the foreign shopping mall it distinguish body type and age group. 2. The result of consumer's satisfaction, the superior fashion malls were Samsung, LG, Fashionpia in the domestic shopping mall, were Gap, JCPenny, Jcrew in the foreign shopping malls. In the total group, 1-5 grades were ranked in the foreign shopping malls. 3. Satisfaction of the foreign fashion mall was higher than that of the domestic fashion malls. Exactly, foreign fashion mall described size chart, size description, product size and body size measuring method but domestic fashion malls didn't describe that. Domestic fashion malls need sizing system development given to consumer higher satisfaction. In addition sizing system based on ISO and domestic industry standard and subdivided to body type and ale group must be studied. Aloe, fashion information, coordination information and product explanation must be reinforced.

    • The objectives of this study is to search for systematic modular design methods for smart photonic sports clothing based on light emitting optical fiber technology related to smart photonic clothing, and to present a variety of modular design models based on optical fiber and light emitting module assembly technology, both of which stand on the basis of body measurements. To achieve the objectives, this paper firstly reviewed the concept of smart photonic clothing and related technologies, and an examination of the concepts of modularization and its designs, as well as examples of modularization used in various fields. To decide the size and attachment point of optical fiber and light emitting modules, the study considered the close connection between modularization and body measurements. Along with body measurements, to derive the most suitable region to attach the optical fiber and light emitting modules, appropriate attachment locations for computing devices and regions which are marginally affected by body movements, were analyzed. On the basis of the results, a modular model of a sports jacket with smart photonic functions was designed and presented, with the focus on the wearer's safety and protection function, which was judged to be the most needed and appropriate function among the three functions of smart photonic clothing related to sports clothing. The results of this study is expected to be useful as basic data for future smart photonic clothing design research.

    A Study on Grading Practices of Women이s Apparel Industry (여성 의류 업체의 그레이딩 실태 연구)

    • The purpose of this study is to review the grading practices and size systems of women's apparel industry in Korea and thereby, analyze the grading problems to find their solutions. Compared with other pattern producing processes, the working principles and methods of grading seem to be consistent, repeatable and stable. Therefore, if the grading deviation setting and working method should be standardized and systematized, it is much easier to automate the grading work than other pattern works. Nevertheless, it was found through this study that grading deviation setting or its application depending on body forms or age groups is not systematic. Moreover, since size identifications, basic sizes or intervals differ among apparel businesses, consumers may be confused in selection of the apparels fitting their body forms. Thus, it is deemed necessary to precisely analyze consumers' body sizes and determine on grading gains or losses in consideration of the body forms.

    Survey on the Brand of Online Custom Dress Shirts and Analysis of the Sizing System (온라인 맞춤 드레스셔츠 업체 현황조사 및 치수체계 분석)

    • In this study, we surveyed the current status and sizing system of the custom dress shirts sold through online shopping, compared with the sizing system of the ready-made dress shirts. We tried to collect the information needed to make the well fitted dress shirts for middle-aged men from this study. The 17 online custom dress shirt brands were selected and the sales type, sales price, design options and size options of each brand were analyzed. The sizing systems of online custom dress shirt brands were compared with the sizing system of the 10 ready made dress shirt brands. The result showed that online custom dress shirts brands offered a variety of design options and size options to meet the consumers' individuality, taste and demand for good fit. In the ready-made brands, all 10 brands were using the same size notation system. In the same size designation, the difference in product size among the ready-made brands showed a tendency to be smaller than the online custom brands. The online custom brands had the different size notation system among brands. The size notation, the number of size designation and the size interval were different for each brand. Also, in the online custom brands, the product size among brands differed from each other in the same size designation. Therefore, the standardized size information and sizing system for middle-aged men that could be used as criteria when making the product size and pattern design in online custom brands were needed.

    New Sizing System Development of Korean Male Military Winter Jacket (한국 남자 군인 방한복의 신 치수체계 개발)

    • This study was designed to help develop an optimized sizing system for the military winter jackets of Korean males. First, we conducted a survey on the supply rate of military winter jackets and the wearing of suitable size jackets in order to identify problems in the current sizing system. We next developed a new sizing system generation method to satisfy the coverage rate and appropriate size number: Hybrid of Grid with Optimization. The findings of this study were: 1. The survey indicated that a 90 (chest girth) size is necessary; in addition, a one-step large size jacket fit well as a right size jacket. 2. We developed three optimized sizing systems for Korean male military winter jackets using the Hybrid of Grid with an optimization method and suggested one of them as a final new sizing system. The new sizing system consisted of two primary dimension: chest girth and stature. It has a 14 size number and its extended coverage rate is larger than the current sizing system and it has a 90 (chest girth) size. It also selected an optimized size for the area of low population density. The new sizing system is therefore considered very effective for Korean male soldiers military winter jackets.

    Development of a Sizing System and a Draping Pattern for Hip Protector based on 3D Data Analysis of Korean Older Women (한국 노인의 3D 인체특성 분석을 통한 Hip protector 치수체계 수립 및 입체패턴 설계)

    • This study aimed to develop an optimal sizing system and a draping pattern for hip protector based on an analysis of anthropometric characteristics of Korean older women. A hip protector is a specialized form of pants or underwear containing pads along the outside of each hip. The 3D body scan data of Korean older women were analyzed to identify their anthropometric characteristics and a four-size system with 93% of population accommodation was developed by clustering analysis based on key dimensions derived from factor analysis. The sizing system consists of small/short, large/short, small/tall, and large/tall. A 3D physical model and hip pads were fabricated; then, a hip protector was draped on the 3D model and hip pads. The sizing system of hip protector was analyzed in terms of size and shape and a draping pattern was compared on back center, back side, front side, front center and pad. Lastly, the pattern deformation and clothing pressure were analyzed using the virtual clothing system CLO. Virtual system have disadvantage of not to suggest the objective value. In the future research the wearing comfort and impact absorption of the hip protector needs to be tested and then a hip protector design will be finalized by considering the hip protector's size, material, comfort testing results, aesthetic appeal, protection effectiveness, and practical utility of everyday use.

    A Study on Sizing System and Preferable Ease in a Men's Dress Shirt for Virtual Mass Customization System (가상공간의 대량맞춤 생산을 위한 남성 드레스셔츠 치수체계와 선호 여유량에 관한 연구)

    • The purpose of this study was to survey sizing system and preferable ease and to decide the body measuring items for pattern making in a men's dress shirt for mass customization industry that is rising to the surface as a new production system. For this, it had a survey subjects were 254 males between 25 to 44 years old who wear dress shirt frequently and the relevant on line companies, and analyzed the garment sizing system and preferable ease. Collected data were analysed by frequency analysis, t-test, $X^2-test$, and ANOVA using SPSS 12.0 for window. Garment pattern making should reflect the sizes of the body parts well, and simplification of the ordering process would work as an important variable. In relation to the preferable ease, older people preferred more ease while younger people preferred fit ease. In relation to the sizes, people wearing the size of '110' preferred more ease than the size of '90'. And people weighing over 90kg preferred sufficient ease than less weighing. People height over 170cm people preferred sufficient ease for the length between shoulders than height under 170cm. In case of the companies had no consistent sizing system. Significant difference was found in the sizes, except for the size of '100', among those companies, there was significant difference in the length between shoulders and the length of the shirt among those companies and those sizes. Significant body parts for a garment pattern making was height, the circumference of the neck, the chest circumference, the length between biacromion, the arms length, and the waist circumference.

    Development of Standard Sizing System for Taekwondo Uniform (태권도복의 표준치수체계 개발)

    • The purpose of this study is to establish a standard sizing system for Taekwondo uniforms. The sample utilized in the study consisted of 5,679 male and female subjects, obtained from Size Korea Project. Twenty three measurements were identified and selected as critical in the design and construction of Taekwondo uniforms. The results were as follows: First, it was determined that all brands used "height" as a key dimension of size designation. Two of brands added "chest girth" or "numeric numbers" to designate size in addition to "height". For example: 1) height/chest girth, 2) height/numeric number. The size pitches of all current Taekwondo uniforms in the market were 10cm of height for all brands. Second, the study showed male measurements were larger and longer than females, establishing that independent sizing specifications by sexes are needed. Third, in case of Taekwondo shirts, height and chest girth were selected as control dimensions. In case of pants, height and waist girth were selected as control dimensions. For selecting optimal sizing pitch, 2 different pitches of chest girth and waist girth(4cm pitch by KS and 8cm pitch by researchers) were compared, while height pitch was fixed at 10cm. Fourth, based on the analysis of the measurements(coverages and coverage efficiency rates), it was determined that 8cm pitches of chest and waist girth were efficient in both upper and lower Taekwondo uniforms. Fifth, subjects distribution counts and percentages were shown after analyzing coverage efficiency rates. Separate results are noted for the upper and lower Taekwondo uniforms. As previously mentioned, height pitches were 10cm and chest and waist pitches were 8cm. Finally, as a result of this research, key and referable measurements relevant to making Taekwondo uniforms were identified for male and female uniform. In case of Taekwondo shirts, 18 sizes were established for men, 16 sizes for women. Twenty five sizes for men and 20 sizes for women were presented in size tables for pants.
