  • Purpose: In terms of efficiency and safety, this study attempted to organize data on the operation methods and architectural planning of infectious diseases hospitals. Methods: The results obtained through on-site and interview surveys with hospital officials and medical staffs at four infectious diseases hospitals under construction were summarized based on those original business plans and facility guidelines. Results: First, the operational methods to secure safety and operational efficiency were summarized for each department which are major hospital functions of infectious disease hospitals. Second, as the architectural planning, the characteristics of space and circulation of each department are summarized. For safety of medical staff, negative pressure and non-negative pressure zone have to completely separated. In addition medical staff wears PPE and enters the negative pressure zone and returns in the order of admiral, shower, and gowning in the PPE undressing room after patient treatment. In case of operational efficiency, flexible operation is required in normal and crisis situations. For example, it is important for The Ward to gradually switch to negative pressure beds in times of crisis from normal situation and the outpatient department considers the composition of negative pressure and non-negative pressure outpatient spaces that can operate in parallel even in crisis situations. Implications: Infectious disease hospitals require flexible operation and appropriate facilities for normal and crisis situations.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop a daylighting design indicator for Korean dementia nursing homes based on the therapeutic effects of light, focusing on the serious aging index facing Korea and the importance of natural light that occupies the most important position in the therapeutic environments for the elderly with dementia. Methods: A wide range of literature-oriented research methods were mobilized to develop the daylighting design indicator of Korean dementia nursing homes. Results: The daylighting design indicator of Korean dementia nursing homes was derived from three perspectives: maximizing daylight availability, optimizing therapeutic view, and minimizing glare. In addition, eighteen basic indicators were derived within seven indicator items in the range of building layout, windows, glazing, shading devices, spaces, interior finishings, and daylight factor. Implications: The daylighting design indicator of Korean dementia nursing homes revealed in this study will contribute to realizing Korean dementia nursing homes as a therapeutic environment for the elderly with dementia.

  • This study reviewed the background of the advent of and the concept of age-integrated facilities where elderly persons' facilities and children's facilities have been built in the same plot or building or established adjacent to each other. And also it examined the concept, necessity, effects, and kinds of intergenerational interactions. Ten age-integrated facilities in Japan, where it is reported that intergenerational interactions are now being implemented, were selected and visited for surveys. This study implemented interviews with staff members and analyses of the drawings of the facilities to grasp the present state of age-integrated facilities and their plan types, etc. Through analyses of relationships between intergenerational interactions and the spaces in which these take place, this study discusses guidelines for space arrangement and for developing interaction space plans for age-integrated facilities that would facilitate intergenerational interactions.
