In general typically granular soils contain a certain amount of fines. It is also widely recognized that foundation soils under working loads show highly non-linear behavior from very early stages of loading. In the present study, a series of laboratory tests with sands of different silt contents are conducted and methods to assess strength and stiffiness characteristics are proposed. Modified hyperbolic stress-strain model is used to analyze non-linearity of silty sands in terms of non-linear Degradation parameters f and g as a function of silt contents and Relative density Dr. Stress-strain curves were obtained from a series of triaxial tests on sands containing different amounts of silt. Initial shear modulus, which is used to normalize Degradation modulus of silty sands, was determined from resonant column test results. From the laboratory test results, it was observed that, as the Relative density increases, values of f decrease and those of g increase. In addition, it was found that values of f and g increase and decrease respectively as a Skeleton void ratio $(e_{sk})$ increases.

In this paper, a half-scaled substructure test was performed to evaluate the buckling and structural safety of an existing transmission tower subjected to wind load. A loading scheme was devised to reproduce the dead and wind loads of a prototype transmission tower, which uses a triangular jig that is mounted on the reduced model to which the similarity law of a half length was applied. As a result of the preliminary numerical analysis carried out to evaluate the stability of a specimen for the design load, is was confirmed that the calculated axial forces of tower leg members were distributed to $80{\sim}90%$ of an admissible buckling load. When the substructured transmission tower was loaded by 270% of its maximum admissible buckling load, it was failed due to the local buckling that is occurred in joints with weak constraints for out-of-plane behavior of leg members. By inspection of load-displacement curves, displacements and strains of members, it is considered that this local buckling was due to additional eccentric force by unbalanced deformation because the time that is reached to yielding stress due to the bending moment is different at each point of a same section.

Spatial structure is an appropriate shape that resists external force only with in-plane forte by reducing the influence of bending moment, and it maximizes the effectiveness of structure system. the spatial structure should be analyzed by nonlinear analysis regardless static and dynamic analysis because it accompanys large deflection for member. To analyze the spatial structure geometrical and material nonlinearity should be considered in the analysis. In this paper, a geometrically nonlinear finite element model for plane truss structures is developed, and material nonlinearity is also included in the analysis. Arc-length method is used to solve the nonlinear finite element model. It is found that the present analysis predicts accurate nonlinear behavior of plane truss.

The study presents a three-dimensional approach to simulate the nonlinear behavior of a 72 m long Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) pre-stressed box girder for a pedestrian bridge in Busan, South Korea. The concrete damage plasticity (CDP) model is adopted to model the non-linear behavior of the UHPFRC material, in which the material properties are obtained from uniaxial compressive and tensile tests. The simulation model based on the proposed stress-strain curve is validated by the results of four-point bending model tests of a 50 m UHPFRC pre-stressed box girder. The results from the simulation models agree with the experimental observations and predict the flexural behavior of the 50 m UHPFRC pre-stressed box girder accurately. Afterward, the validated model is utilized to investigate the flexural behavior of the 72 m UHPFRC pre-stressed box girder. Here, the load-deflection curve, stress status of the girder at various load levels, and connection details is analyzed. The load-deflection curve is also compared with design load to demonstrate the great benefit of the slender UHPFRC box girder. The obtained results demonstrate the applicability of the nonlinear finite element method as an appropriate option to analyze the flexural behavior of pre-stressed long-span girders.

The superlattice infrared photodetector (SLIP) with an active layer of 8/8-ML InAs/GaSb type-II strained-layer superlattice (SLS) of 150 periods was grown by MBE technique, and the proto-type discrete device was defined with an aperture of $200-{\mu}m$ diameter. The contrast profile of the transmission electron microscope (TEM) image and the satellite peak in the x-ray diffraction (XRD) rocking curve show that the SLS active layer keeps abrupt interfaces with a uniform thickness and a periodic strain. The wavelength and the bias-voltage dependences of responsivity (R) and detectivity ($D^*$) measured by a blackbody radiation source give that the cutoff wavelength is ${\sim}5{\mu}m$, and the maximum Rand $D^*$ ($\lambda=3.25{\mu}m$) are ${\sim}10^3mA/W$ (-0.6 V/13 K) and ${\sim}10^9cm.Hz^{1/2}/W$ (0 V/13 K), respectively. The activation energy of 275 meV analyzed from the temperature dependent responsivity is in good agreement with the energy difference between two SLS subblevels of conduction and valence bands (HH1-C) involving in the photoresponse process.

In order to develop stretchable substrates for wearable packaging applications, the variation behavior of elastic modulus was evaluated for transparent PDMS Sylgard 184 and black PDMS Sylgard 170 as a function of the base/curing agent mixing ratio. Both for Sylgard 184 and Sylgard 170, the true elastic modulus evaluated on a true stress-true strain curve was higher more than two times compared to the engineering elastic modulus obtained from an engineering stres-sengineering strain curve, and their difference became larger with increasing the stiffness of the PDMS. Sylgard 184 exhibited a maximum engineering elastic modulus of 1.74 MPa and a maximum true elastic modulus of 3.57 MPa at the base/curing agent mixing ratio of 10. A maximum engineering elastic modulus of 1.51 MPa and a maximum true elastic modulus of 3.64 MPa were obtained for Sylgard 170 at the base/curing agent mixing ratio of 2.
Using combinations of carbon and glass fiber composites normally used for strengthening of concrete structures, the hybrid effect from strengthening concrete structures using the composite is studied. To produce the hybrid effects, the specimens were made with optimum proportions of carbon fibers with glass fibers. Then, direct tensile tests were conducted on the hybrid FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) specimens. Unlike the woven fiber sheet currently used in construction sites, the FRP specimens have to be directly combined with the fibers, which make the work very complicated. Therefore, direct tensile test specimens manufacturing method based on the combination of high-tension carbon fibers and E-type glass fibers was proposed and the effects of hybridization is studied through the direct tensile test. By comparing the ductility index, the modulus of elasticity, and the stress-strain curves of the specimens, the most optimum glass to carbon fiber combination ratio for the hybrid FRP was found to be 9 to 1 with ductile K-type epoxy. The study results are discussed in detail in the paper.
When the columns of existing RC structures are repaired with FRP composites, the core concrete of the columns is confined by both materials of steel spirals (or steel hoops) and FRP composites because the FRP composites wrap the existing columns which have been already confined with steel spirals or hoops. As the stress-strain curves of steel and fiber are different to each other, the behavior of concrete columns confined with both steel spiral and FRP composites is also different to that of concrete columns confined with only steel spiral or FRP composites. Twenty four RC cylinders were tested in order to observe the behavior of RC cylinders confined with both materials. The observed results of the test showed that the behavior of the test cylinders confined with both materials was quite different to that of cylinders confined with only one material.
An experimental model which considers post-peak behaviors and pre-peak damage characteristics representing changes of elastic moduli in each damage level was developed. From experiments, some damage thresholds of rocks were determined, and regression analyses were carried out in order to represent changes of elastic moduli in each damage level as functions of confining pressure. In addition, it was intended to simulate post-peak behaviors with Hoek-Brown constants, $m_r\;and\;s_r$ for post-failure. The developed experimental model was implemented into $FLAC^{2D}$ by a FISH function. From results of parametric studies on Hoek-Brown constants for post-peak, it was revealed that uniaxial compressive strength more highly depends upon $s_r$, although it depends on both $m_r\;and\;s_r$. It was also shown that the post-peak slopes of stress-stain curves depend mainly on $m_r$. When the optimum models obtained from parametric studies were applied to numerical analysis, they predicted maximum strengths obtained from experiments and well simulated stiffness changes due to damage levels.

When fiber reinforced concrete is manufactured, it is useful to utilize lathe scrap as an aiternative material of steel fiber, because it is not only economical as an by-product of steel manufactures, but also has a very similar composition to that of steel fiber. The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the compressive strength and tensile behavior and then propose a material model of lathe scrap reinforced mortar. For this purpose, the lathe scrap reinforced mortars were ma de a ccording to their tota l volume fra ction of 1.5 % for wa ter-binder ra tio of 30 % a nd 40 %, respectively, a nd then the mechanical properties such as compressive strength, direct tensile strength, and stress-strain curve of those were evaluated. Also, based on the experimental results of lathe scrap reinforced mortar the material model for tensile behavior was suggested. It was revealed that the experimental results and the proposed material model corresponded relatively well.
