  • In this paper, a methodology, which is able to predict the thermal stresses accurately yet efficiently, is presented for beam structures via Saint-Venant's principle. In general, higher-order beam theories have been known to be effective for the prediction of thermal stresses. In contrast to this, we propose the method to predict the thermal stresses of beam structures by post-processing the classical beam theory via Saint-Venant's principle. The approach includes an out-of-plane warping displacement to account for the through-the-thickness thermal deformation. With this, one can accurately recover the thermal stresses as compared to the elasticity solutions. In fact, they are identical for the beams made of isotropic materials. The effect of out-of-plane warping is also investigated, it turns out that the effect is negligible in mechanical stress analysis but not in thermal stress analysis.

  • The stress and displacement fields at the crack tip were studied during the unsteady propagation of a mode III crack in a direction that was different from the property graduation direction in functionally graded materials (FGMs). The property graduation in FGMs was assumed based on the linearly varying shear modulus under a constant density and the exponentially varying shear modulus and density. To obtain the solution of the harmonic function, the general partial differential equation of the dynamic equilibrium equation was transformed into a Laplace equation. Based on the Laplace equation, the stress and displacement fields, which depended on the time rates of change in the crack tip speed and stress intensity factor, were obtained through an asymptotic analysis. Using the stress and displacement fields, the effects of the angled property variation on the stresses, displacements, and stress intensity factors are discussed.

  • In this research, the photoelastic experimental hybrid method with Hook-Jeeves numerical method has been developed: This method is more precise and stable than the photoelastic experimental hybrid method with Newton-Rapson numerical method with Gaussian elimination method. Using the photoelastic experimental hybrid method with Hook-Jeeves numerical method, we can separate stress components from isochromatics only and stress intensity factors and stress concentration factors can be determined. The photoelastic experimental hybrid method with Hook-Jeeves had better be used in the full field experiment than the photoelastic experimental hybrid method with Newton-Rapson with Gaussian elimination method.

  • In this study, we propose a new three-node hybrid-mixed curved beam element with the relaxed-equiribrium stress functions for static analysis. The proposed element considering shear deformation is based on the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle. The stress functions are carefully chosen from three important considerations: (i) all the kinematic deformation modes must be suppressed, and (ii) the spurious constraints must be removed in the limiting behaviors via the field-consistency, and (iii) the relaxed equilibrium conditions could be incorporated because it might be impossible to select the stress functions and parameters to fully satisfy both the equiribrium conditions and the suppression of kinematic deformation modes in the three-node curved beam hybrid-mixed formulation. Numerical examples confirm the superior and stable behavior of the proposed element regardless of slenderness ratio and curvature. Besides, the proposed element shows the outstanding performance in predicting the stress resultant distributions.

  • The analysis model is the power law creep material containing an elliptical rigid inclusion subjected to the arbitrarily directional stress on infinite boundary. The stress analysis is performed using the conformal mapping function and complex pseudo-stress function. The stress distributions near an elliptical rigid inclusion are obtained with various ellipse shapes, strain hardening exponents and directions of applied stress.

  • In fracture mechanics, the weight function can be used for calculating stress intensity factors. In this paper, a two-dimensional electroelastic analysis is performed on a transversely isotropic piezoelectric material with an open crack. A plane strain formulation of the piezoelectric problem is solved within the Leknitskii formalism. Weight function theory is extended to piezoelectric materials. The stress intensity factors and electric displacement intensity factor are calculated by the weight function theory.

  • This paper presents stress distribution around a central crack tip in a tensile plate using phase-shifting photoelasticity and a power series stress function. Isochromatic data along the straight lines far from the crack tip were obtained by phase shifting photoelasticity and were used as input data of the hybrid experimental analysis. By using the complex-type power series stress equations, the photoelastic stress distribution fields in the vicinity of the crack and the mode I stress intensity factor were obtained. With the help of image processing software, accuracy and reliability was enhanced by twice multiplying and sharpening the measured isochromatics. Actual and reconstructed fringes were compared qualitatively. For quantitative comparison, percentage errors and standard deviations of the percentage errors were calculated for all measured input data by varying the number of terms in the stress function. The experimental results agreed with those predicted by finite element analysis and empirical equation within 2 percent error.

  • The matric suction and volumetric water content of dredging soils obtained from Saemangeum area were measured by the automated Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) apparatus under both drying and wetting conditions. Based on the test result, SWCCs of the dredging soils were estimated by the van Genuchten(1980) model. The matric suction of drying process is larger than that of wetting process at a same effective degree of saturation. The suction stresses for various matirc suctions were estimated using Lu and Likos(2006) model and the Suction Stress Characteristic Curves (SSCC) were predicted using the independent parameter of SWCC. The suction stress of drying path was increased and decreased, while the suction stress of wetting path was continuously decreased with increasing the effective degree. Also, the suction stress of drying path is larger than that of wetting path at a same effective degree of saturation. The Hydraulic Conductivity Function(HCF) was also predicted by the van Genuchten(1980) model. The hydraulic conductivity was increased with increasing the volumetric water content. The hydraulic conductivity of drying path is larger than that of wetting path at a same matric suction. According to the results of SWCCs and SSCCs, the hysteresis phenomenon of suction stress or matric suction during both drying and wetting paths was occurred. The main reason of hysteresis phenomenon is a ink bottle effect of water among soil particles.

  • Based on many experimental results on fine silica sands, the strength relation between triaxial and plane strain tests is expressed as a function of both density and mean effective principal stress at failure. Stress ratio of mean normal stress to deviatoric stress at failure is a well defined function of shear angle of friction, This ratio decreases with increasing shear angle of friction. Intermediate principal stress is also expressed in terms of major and minor principal stresses and a relatively good agreement between theoretical and observed angles of failure plane in plane strain test is confirmed.
