  • For the fatigue design of aircraft landing gear, the safe-life approach is applied. Structural defects such as cracks or detrimental deformations should not occur under the fatigue load spectrum depicting the entire lifetime usage of the aircraft. In the design phase, the fatigue life of the landing gear is estimated analytically by adopting the stress-based approach because the fatigue of aircraft landing gear is generally high-cycle fatigue. This utilizes S-N curves that are factored to produce design curves that account for the scatter and surface finish of the material. In the test and evaluation phases, a fatigue test should be conducted for full-scale landing gear to substantiate the fatigue design requirement in the end. In this study, the procedure for the fatigue test and evaluation of aircraft landing gear is presented with real application cases.

  • A failure criterion must be considered in each failure mode and loading condition to provide easy determining strength parameters, flexibility and rational simplicity. In this study, new failure criterion was developed by introducing equivalent strength under biaxial loading of tension and torsion. The experimental results showed that the equivalent biaxial strength has a power law relation with respect to a parameter, cos($tan^{-1}R_b$). Failure strength under biaxial loadings could be predicted as a function of tensile strength, torsional strength and biaxial ratio. The scattering of experimental data could be predicted using a Weibull distribution function and the concept of equivalent biaxial strength. Also, in this study, a fatigue theory was developed based on a plane stress model which enabled the S-N curve for combined stress states to be predicted from the S-N data for uniaxial loading. The prediction models can be predicted a biaxial strength and fatigue life of general laminated composite naterials under multi-axial loadings.

  • In designing, the strength of tubular joint has been an important problem for integrity of steel structures in which many tubular members are used. This paper presents the results of FEM analysis on stress concentration and fatigue crack initiation life for two types of tubular joints. One is circular and rectangular T type joints which consist of circular brace and rectangular chord. Another is circular and circular T type joints which consist of circular brace and circular chord. FEM analyses were performed under the axial load and in-plane bending moment. The fatigue crack initiation life can be estimated by using $\varepsilon$-N curve and by applying the Palmgren-Miner linear damage rule. According to the results, the stress concentration factor(SCF) of circular and rectangular joints is higher than that of circular and circular joints. The fatigue crack initiation lives of circular-circular joints and circular-rectangular joints were calculated.

  • This study investigated the influence of high temperature and UNSM on the fatigue behavior of Inconel 718 alloy at RT, 300, 500, and $600^{\circ}C$. Fatigue properties of Inconel 718 were reduced at high temperatures compared to those at room temperature. However, the endurance limit was similar to that of the room temperature sample at the design stress level. High-temperature fatigue characteristics of the UNSM-treated specimen were significantly improved at the design stress level as compared to the untreated specimens. Specifically, the influence of temperature on the S-N curves at the design stress level of the UNSM-treated specimen showed the tendency of longer fatigue lives than those of untreated ones. Researchers can obtain rotary fatigue test results simply by heating specimens with a halogen lamp to precise temperatures during specific operations.

  • Two types of very small multiplying gears and arrays have been developed for new dental hand-pieces, and the increased speed ratios, modules, number of teeth, gear diameters, and gear types were calculated based on the dynamics of the machinery. The contacting and bending strengths were evaluated for gear teeth with two design concepts using AGMA equations and finite element analyses, and the contacting stresses on teeth with and without DLC (diamond-like-carbon) coating layers were calculated. Fatigue and tension tests were performed to obtain an S-N curve, the Young's modulus, and the strength of the gear material, and these were utilized in the analyses. Slightly larger stresses were found for 2-axis-type gears than for other types of gears, and the S-N curves showed that a gear lifetime of 109 cycles was satisfied. The contacting stresses in gears coated with DLC were reduced by 30%. A new prototype model of a hand-piece with small gears was successfully fabricated and tested.

  • Fatigue has been known as a major degradation mechanism of ASME class 1 components in nuclear power plants. Fatigue damage could be accelerated by combined interaction of several loads and environmental factors. However, the environmental effect is not explicitly addressed in the ASME S-N curve which is based on air at room temperature. Therefore many studies have been performed to understand the environmental effects on fatigue behavior of materials used in nuclear power plants. As a part of efforts, we performed low cycle fatigue tests under various environmental conditions and analyzed the environmental effects on the fatigue life of SA508 Gr. 1a low alloy steel by comparing with higuchi's model. Test results show that the fatigue life depends on water temperature, dissolved oxygen and strain rate. But strain rate over 0.4%/s has little effect on the fatigue life. To find the cause of different fatigue life with ANL's and higuchi's model, another test performed with different heat numbered and heat treated materials of SA508 Gr. 1a. On a metallurgical point of view, the material with bainite microstructure shows much longer fatigue life than that with ferrite/pearlite microstructure. And the characteristics of crack propagation as different microstructure seem to be the main cause of different fatigue life.

  • We describe the evaluation of the fatigue life and strength of a lightweight railway bogie frame made of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin-woven composites. To obtain the S-N curve for the evaluation of the fatigue characteristics of the composite bogie frame, we performed a tension-compression fatigue test for composite specimens with different stacking sequences of the warp direction, fill direction, and $0^{\circ}/90^^{\circ}$ direction. We used a stress ratio (R) of -1, a frequency of 5 Hz, and an endurance limit of $10^7$. The fatigue strength of the composite bogie frame was evaluated by a Goodman diagram according to JIS E 4207. The results show that the fatigue life and strength of the lightweight composite bogie satisfy the requirements of JIS E 4207. Given its weight, its performance was better than that of a conventional metal bogie frame based on an SM490A steel material.

  • 'Electro-Mechanical Brake (EMB) is a novel braking system for automobiles and railway vehicles, and research in this area is actively underway. The current braking system for railway vehicles generates a braking force using a pneumatic cylinder, but the EMB system generates the force through a combination of an electric motor and gears. In this study, the design of an EMB system that meets the domestic standards was conducted through the finite element modeling and fatigue analysis of an eccentric rotating shaft-based EMB system capable of generating a high clamping force. At this time, to improve the accuracy of fatigue analysis, three types of fatigue test specimens, which were subjected to the same heat treatment as the materials used in the prototype, were produced, and the fatigue tests were performed for each material. The fatigue properties (S-N curves) were obtained from the fatigue test results for each material and reflected in the analysis model. The results of fatigue analysis confirmed that the design of the EMB prototype could satisfy the maximum commercial braking/relaxation of 530,000 times, which was the endurance life condition for domestic railway vehicles. In addition, based on this design, a prototype will be manufactured, and endurance testing will be completed to demonstrate the durability characteristics of the developed prototype.

  • Although TBM's cutterhead requires design review for fatigue failure due to wear-induced section loss as well as heavy load during excavation, it is difficult to find a case of fatigue analysis for TBM cutterhead at present. In this study, a stress-life design review was conducted on cutter heads with a diameter of 8.2 m using S-N curves as a safety life design concept. Also, we introduced the fatigue design method of construction equipment and the method of assessing fatigue damage and explained the results of the fatigue analysis on the TBM cutter head with a diameter of 8.2 m. The S-N curve has been shown to play a key role in fatigue design and can also be used to assess how much fatigue damage a structure is suffering from at this point in time. In the future, it is necessary to find out when fatigue problems occur during using the equipment and when it is good to conduct safety inspections of the equipment.

  • Welded connectors of the cover plates, the transverse stiffeners of the plate girders, and the gusset plates of the plates girders or box girders, were selected as studying objects. A simplified method of drawing the S-N curves in these welded joints by a computer program without the direct fatigue tests was established. The plots on the S-N curve using the values from the practical fatigue tests were compared with the results from the method of the computer programming. The results of these studies are as follows. It appeared that the fatigue life by calculation method was a little less than the practical fatigue life from the actual tests. The latter values included both life $N_c$ of occurrence of initial crack $a_i$ and the life $N_p$ of propagation of critical crack. On the other hand, the former values included only the life $N_p$. Therefore, these results should be considered as justifiable ones. Since the difference between the two results was not significant, the results by calculation method should be in the conservation side when the safety of the structures was considered. Consequently, the results by calculation method should be applicable to the fracture fatigue design of structure. For reference, the same fatigue tests were performed with the specimens of 3 pieces in each case made of the low-strength steel, SS 41. The results went unexpected showing that the fatigue strength was lower in the case of low-strength steel. That is, in the case of the cover plate, the fatigue strength became slowly higher than the case of high-strength steel, SWS 50. That was observed when the maximum testing stress was higher than $14kg/mm^2$. In addition, in the case of the transverse stiffener, the fatique strength became rapidly higher than the case of SWS 50. That was observed when the maximum testing stress was lower than $31kg/mm^2$. It was thought that more such fatigue tests should be performed for more reliable results.
