  • A high-efficiency electronic ballast for HID lamps is presented. The ballast consists of a PFC and a resonant inverter. To reduce losses of the ballast, DC link voltage should be determined by taking into account the peak voltage of lamp and the maximum flux density should be kept 0.2[T] on all of inductors. AR inductor at bridge diode is employed in order to remove currant harmonics from PFC. An inductor is connected in series with an electrolytic capacitor at DC link to reject high-frequency current. The acoustic resonance is eliminated using the stead spectrum technique. The electronic ballast for 250[W] metal-halide discharge lamp is implemented and 96[%] efficiency, no acoustic resonance and low conducted EMI level are accomplished.

  • The main objective of this study was investigation of natural gas flames in a lean premixed swirl-stabilized dump combustor with an attention focused on the effect of the various fuel-air mixing section geometry on the combustion instability characteristics. The combustor and mixing section length was varied in order to have different acoustic resonance characteristics from 800 to 1800 mm in combustor and 470, 550, 870 mm in mixing section. We observed two dominant instability frequencies in this study. Lower frequencies were associated with a fundamental longitudinal mode of combustor length. Higher frequencies were related to secondary longitudinal mode of coupled with the combustor and mixing section. As a result, combustion instability was strongly affected by acoustic characteristics of combustor and mixing section geometry.

  • Typical combustion instability such as DC-Shift found in the hybrid rocket motor is characterized by non-linearity. DC-Shift can occur in two different realizations. One is so-called a positive shift of measured DC voltage where the pressure increase suddenly. The other is a negative shift where the pressure drops abruptly. In the present work, specifically the negative DC-Shift was investigated to analyze the effect of oxidizer flow condition and the resonance between fundamental frequency and other ones, such as Helmholtz frequency, and acoustic frequency. Results show a peak frequency of several hundreds HZ shifts as combustion proceeds. A negative DC-shift was found as the result of phase cancellation between two dominant frequency, combustion frequency and flow related frequency. Still is it required to study further to identify the change of dominance of frequency during the combustion.

  • A systematic development process for the low noise FEAD (Front End Accessory Drive) system is presented by combining CAE (Computer Aided Engineering) and the experimental rig test. In the estimation of the belt drive noise, two main difficulties arise from the high non-linearity due to the stick-slip contacts on the interfaces of the belt and pulleys, and the interaction of the belt drive system with the powertrain rotational parts. In this work, a recently developed analysis method of the belt drive has been employed considering powertrain rotational dynamics. As results, it shows good correlation with the vehicle tests in various operational modes. The established model has been employed to validate the new design improving the stick-slip noise of the problematic FEAD system. Furthermore, the best proposal of FEAD system in terms of functionality [NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness), fuel economy, cost. etc.] has been suggested in the concept design stage of new engine through this presented methodology.

  • In this research, damage behavior of singly oriented ply (SOP) fiber metal laminate (FML) subjected to concentrated load was studied. The static indentation tests were conducted to study fiber orientation effect on damage behavior of FML. During the static indentation tests, acoustic emission technique (AE) was adopted to study damage characteristics of FML. AE signals were obtained by using AE sensor with 150kHz resonance frequency and the signals were compared with indentation curves of FML. The damage process of SOP FML was divided by three parts, i.e., crack initiation, crack propagation, and penetration. The AE characteristics during crack initiation show that the micro crack is initiated at lower ply of the plate, then propagate along the thickness of the plate with creating tiber debonding. The crack grow along the fiber direction with occurring 60∼80dB AE signal. During the penetration, the fiber breakage was observed. As fiber orientation increases, talc fiber breakage occurs more frequently. The AE signal behaviors support these results. Cumulative AE counts could well predict crack initiation and crack propagation and AE amplitude were useful for the prediction of damage failure mode.

  • This paper describes the analysis of vibration characteristics through the human body as the research for voice therapy and diagnosis. The oscillation signal is not external forces but the self-voice to be pronounced the vowels ('a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u'). The experiment system consists of microphones, accelerometers and amplifiers. The input data are stored by the computer. At the same time, the voice is stored by the microphone and the vibration signal of the human body is stored by accelerometer. The 63 points are appointed in head, neck, trunk of human body. The positions and number of times are changeable by the purpose. The analysis parameters are amplitude, phase, fundamental. frequency, formant and the correlation of vibration signal and voice is measured by coherence function. The results show that the vibration signals have characteristic vibration in the positions of human body.

  • We have designed and made three kinds of FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating) Acoustic Transducer using Hopper type WDM on the use of recently developed FBG in Korea. The newly designed three kinds of FBG Acoustic Transducer using Hopper type WDM have an excellent merit of practical use with simple structure of sensors arm as well as the merit with existing fiber sensors. It was possible to detect sound waves in the range of 10 Hz to 18 kHz through the newly designed three kinds of FBG Acoustic Transducer and also, possible to detect its signal within the maximum range of 8.6 m by the use of most suitable resonance condition of the transducer. Especially, we can expect the utilization of low-frequency signal detection instead of existing acoustic sensor in the environment of electric noise and inferior condition. Furthermore, they can be developed as the high-sensibility and multi-point signal detection system through the sensor array system.

  • In this study, blowoff was investigated in a ducted combustor with the bluff body when acoustic excitation was forced. To observe the flame structure, OH radical chemiluminescence was used and the image was analyzed by using POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) algorithm. Natural gas mainly composed of methane was used as fuel. Blowoff occurred when the equivalence ratio was reduced. Equivalence ratio causing blowoff was measured by changing air flow rate, excitation frequency and sound pressure. Blowoff equivalence ratio was varied depending on the experimental conditions. Vortex frequency behind the bluff body and resonance effect in combustor are the main factors that affect the blowoff equivalence ratios with the excitation.

  • In order to analyze the quantitative characteristics of acoustic streaming, experimental setup of 3-D stereoscopic PIV(particle imaging velocimetry) was designed and quantitative ultrasonic flow fields in the gap between the ultrasonic vibrator and heat source were measured. Utilizing acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration, surface temperature drop of cooling object was also measured. The study on smart cooling method by acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration was performed due to the empirical relations of flow pattern, average flow velocity, different gaps, and enhancement on cooling rates in the gap. Average velocity fields and maximum acoustic streaming velocity in the open gap between the stationary cylindrical heat source and ultrasonic vibrator were experimentally measured at no vibration, resonance, and non-resonance. It was clearly observed that the enhancement of cooling rates existed owing to the acoustic air flow in the gap at resonance and non-resonance induced by ultrasonic vibration. The ultrasonic wave propagating into air in the gap creates steady-state secondary eddy called acoustic streaming which enhances heat transfer from the heat source to encompassing air. The intensity of the acoustic streaming induced by ultrasonic vibration experimentally depended upon the gap between the heat source and ultrasonic vibrator. The ultrasonic vibration at resonance caused the increase of the acoustic streaming velocity and convective heat transfer augmentation when the flow fields by 3D stereoscopic PIV and temperature drop of the heat source were measured experimentally. The acoustic streaming velocity of air enhancement on cooling rates in the gap is maximal when the gap agrees with the multiples of half wavelength of the ultrasonic wave, which is specifically 12 mm.

  • In this paper, we designed a wideband Tonpilz transducer, and verified the validity of the design through experiments. The wide frequency bandwidth was achieved by coupling the fundamental longitudinal mode of the transducer with a flapping mode of the head mass. Structure of the Tonpilz transducer was optimized by means of the finite element method and genetic algorithm to achieve the widest fractional bandwidth under design constraints. The optimized structure showed a far wider -6 dB fractional bandwidth of transmitting responses than that of single mode transducers. For verification of the design result, we manufactured a transducer prototype of the designed structure and characterized its performance, which showed good agreement with the design results.
