Fiber fracture is one of the dominant failure phenomena affecting the total mechanical Performance of the composites. Fiber fracture locations were measured through the conventional optical microscope and the nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) technique and then were compared together as a function of the epoxy matrix modulus and the fiber surface treatment by the electrodeposition method (ED). Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was measured using tensile fragmentation test in combination of AE method. ED treatment of the fiber surface enlarged the number of fiber fracture locations in comparison to the untreated case. The number of fiber fracture events measured by the AE method was less than optically obtained one. However, fiber fracture locations determined by AE detection corresponded with those by optical observation with small errors. The source location of fiber breaks by AE analysis could be a nondestructive, valuable method to measure interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of matrix in non-, semi- and/or transparent polymer composites.
In this study, we have constructed the acoustic microscope using quadrature technique and analyzed the relative variation of image intensity and the quality of image by reconstructing the amplitude and phase image for surface defects with tiny hight variation. In this experiment, we have constructed the scanning acoustic microscope using the focused transducer with 3㎒ center frequency and the quadrature detector. And we have fabricated aluminum samples with round defects whose depth is different and reconstructed the amplitude and phase images for the samples. One sample has round defects with 2㎜ diameter and 100㎛ depth and the other has round defects with 4㎜ diameter and 5㎜ depth. In the result of line scanning for the sample with 100㎛ round defects, it has been shown that the variation rate of amplitude image intensity is 7% and the variation rate of phase image intensity is 89%. The phase image has better contrast than amplitude image for the sample. In contrast to this, the amplitude image has better contrast than phase image for the sample with 5㎜ depth's defects. Accordingly there is big difference between amplitude image and phase image for depth variation of defects whose boundary is 1 wavelength. Consequently the acoustic microscope using quadrature detector can be evaluated efficiently more than using envelope detector, for detecting defects which have height variation less than 1 wavelength. And also the phase image and the amplitude image can be used for detecting defects of tiny height variation with complimentary relation.

A successful on-line monitoring system for conventional machining operations has the potential to reduce cost, guarantee consistency of product quality, improve productivity and provide a safer environment for the operator. In fine-shape machining, typical signs of tool problems such as vibration, noise, chip flow characteristics and visual signs are almost unnoticeable without the use of special equipment. These characteristics increase the importance of automatic monitoring in fine-shape machining, however, sensing and interpretation of signals ar more complex. In addition, the shafts of the mini-tools break before the typical extensive cutting edge of the tool gets damaged. In this study, the existence of a relationship between the characteristics of the cutting force and tool usage was investigated, and tool breakage detection algorithm by LabVIEW was developed and the following results are obtained. It was possible to use a relative error compare which mainly used in established experiment and investigated tool breakage detection algorithm in time domain which can detect AE and cutting force signals more effective and accurate.

The study was carried out to analyze the fracture behavior and the acoustic emission(AE) characteristics and to find the relationship among tensile strength, fracture toughness and cure pressure in owe process of the carbon fiber reinforced composites of two types, $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]_{2S}$ and $[0^{\circ}\;_2/90^{\circ}\;_2]_S$. AE signals were detected during the curing process, tensile tests and fracture toughness tests by acoustic emission(AE) measurements, respectively. Tensile strengths showed that the less cure pressurizing steps and the side of $[0^{\circ}/90^{\circ}]_{2S}$ specimens had the higher strengths than those of the others. Fracture toughness by the change of test temperature showed nearly same values in the same temperature region, but the higher test temperature had the lower fracture toughness values. In order to examine the relationship between fracture behavior of CFRP in tensile and fracture toughness tests and AE signals, the post processing for AE parameters of AE data and the observations of microscope and SEM have been carried out respectively.
Comparison of interfacial properties and microfailure mechanisms of oxygen-plasma treated poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole(PBO. Zylon) and poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide)(PPTA, Kevlar) fibers/ epoxy composites were investigated using micromechanical technique and nondestructive acoustic emission(AE). Interfacial shear strength(IFSS) and work of adhesion, Wa of PBO or Kevlar fibers/epoxy composites increased by oxygen-plasma treatment. Plasma-treated Kevlar fiber shooed the maximum critical surface tension and polar term, whereas the untreated PBO fiber showed the minimum value. Microfibril fracture pattern of plasma-treated Kevlar fiber appeared obviously. Based on the propagation of microfibril failure toward core region. the number of AE events for plasma-treated PBO and Kevlar fibers increased significantly. The results oi nondestructive AE were consistent well with microfailure modes by optical observation in microdroplet and two-fiber composites tests.

Fracture behaviors and acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of single-edge-notched monolithic aluminum plates and glass fiber/aluminum hybrid laminate plates have been investigated under tensile loads. AE signals from monolithic aluminum could be classified into two different types: signals with low frequency band and high frequency band. High frequency signals were detected in the post stage of loading beyond displacement of 0.45mm. For glass fiber/aluminum laminates, AE signals with high amplitude and long duration were additionally confirmed on FFT frequency analysis, which corresponded to macro-crack propagation and/or delamination between A1 and fiber layers. On the basis of the above AE analysis and fracture observation with optical microscopy and ultrasonic T scan, characteristic features of AE associated with fracture processes of single-edge-notched glass fiber/aluminum laminates were elucidated according to different fiber ply orientations.
The sound absorption coefficient and sound transmission loss of graphite intercalation compound (GIC) included epoxy composites were investigated. Epoxy resin was infused into the expanded GIC and the impedance tube method was employed to measure the sound absorption coefficient and sound transmission loss. Scanning electron microscopy photographs showed uniform distribution of the GIC in the epoxy matrix. The surface density of epoxy/GIC (20 wt%) composites decreased about 56% compared to that of pure epoxy. The sound absorption coefficient of composites increased about 3 times at the frequency range of 500~1000 Hz compared to the pure epoxy. The sound transmission loss of composites decreased with increasing the GIC content and it is attributed to the increase of pores in the composites.

The initiation and growth of short fatigue cracks in the simulated aircraft structure with a series of rivet holes was detected by acoustic emission (AE). The location and the size of short tracks were determined by AE source location techniques and the measurement with traveling microscope. AE events increased intermittently with the initiation and growth of short cracks to form a stepwise increment curve of cumulative AE events. For the precise determination of AE source locations, a region-of-interest (ROI) was set around the rivet holes based on the plastic zone size in fracture mechanics. Since the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was very low at this early stage of fatigue cracks, the accuracy of source location was also enhanced by the wavelet transform do-noising. In practice, the majority of AE signals detected within the ROI appeared to be noise from various origins. The results showed that the effort of structural geometry and SNR should be closely taken into consideration for the accurate evaluation of fatigue damage in the structure.

A study has been made to investigate the acoustic emission(AE) behavior during the tensile and fracture tests of an Al-Li 8090 alloy, and to correlate it with the deformation mechanisms as a function of microstructure and plate orientation. Mechanical tests and AE measurements were conducted on the specimens with different microstructures (the ${\delta}'$ phase dominant microstructure and the $S'+{\delta}'$ microstructure) and with different orientations (L and ST). In the ${\delta}'$ structure, continuous emissions were produced in both the L and ST oriented specimens, while only the burst emissions were observed to occur in the $S'+{\delta}'$ structure. It was inferred from the above results that continuous type emissions were mainly attributed to the shearing of coherent ${\delta}'$ precipitates in the ${\delta}'$ structure, while the burst type emissions were produced due to the shearing or microcracking of incoherent S' phase in the $S'+{\delta}'$ structure. As to the effect of plate orientation, the ST oriented specimens showed more burst emissions than the LT oriented ones. A large number of burst emissions produced in the ST specimen were presumably due to the rapid crack propagation along the intergranular boundary located parallel to the crack propagation direction.
The mechanical seals, which are installed in rotating machines like pump and compressor, are generally used as sealing devices in the many fields of industries. The failure of mechanical seals such as leakage, crack, breakage, fast and severe wear, excessive torque, and squeaking results in big problems. To identify abnormal phenomena on mechanical seals and to propose the proper monitoring parameter for the failure of mechanical seals, sliding wear experiments were conducted. Acoustic emission, torque, and temperature were measured during experiments. Optical microstructure was observed for the wear processing after every 10 minute sliding at rotation speed of 1750 rpm and scanning electron microscopy was also observed. Except for the initial part of every experiment, the variation of acoustic emission was well coincided with torque variation during the experiments. This study concludes that acoustic emission and torque are proper monitoring parameters for the failure of mechanical seals. The intensity of acoustic emission signals is measured in root mean square voltage. Temperature of sealing face will be used as a parallel parameter for increasing the reliability of monitoring system.
