Recently, a score-penalty method has been used for the acoustic passive tracking of marine mammals. The interesting aspect of this technique lies in the loss function, which has a penalty term representing the mismatch between the measured signal and the modeled signal, while the traditional time-domain matched-field processing is positively considering the match between them. In this study, we apply the score-penalty method into the depth estimation of a passive target with a known source waveform. Assuming deep ocean environments with uncertainties in the sound speed profile, we evaluate the score-penalty method, comparing it with the time-domain matched field processing method. We shows that the score-penalty method is more accurate than the time-domain matched field processing method in the ocean environment with weak mismatch of sound speed profile, and has better efficiency. However, in the ocean enviroment with strong mismatch of the sound speed profile, the score-penalty method also fails in the depth estimation of a target, similar to the time-domain matched-field processing method.
The high resolution studies for shallow seismic reflection are carried out using 24-channel seismograph and the high sensitivity geophone(50-500Hz). In order to study the underground structures such as small faults, fractures, cracks and cavities, it is of great importance to enhance high resolution of the seisrnic records for the targets vertically and laterally. In analysis of high resolution seismic reflection, Nyquist frequency($F_N$) should be lager than the highest frequency in the records and the highest wave number should not be exceed the Nyquist wave number($1/2{\Delta}x$). The highest frequency above the Nyquist will be removed using low pass filter or antialias filter. The trace interval Ax should be taken into account so that the highest wave number(f/v) can be less than $1/2{\Delta}x$. The Fraunhofer diffraction of a hyperbola seismic section above the tunnel appeares on the common offset method, and little first arrivals of direct wave on the single-end shooting, delayed strong impulsive reflections are also shown above the tunnel. Ray Method(Cherveney and Psencik, 1983) also represents the same results that the reflected waves from the tunnel are delayed and single impulsive with little first arrivals, while transrnitted waves through the tunnel are delayed with low frequency.
To study the water-entry impact noise, on-board experiment using a small launcher firing various objects was performed in the Yellow Sea. As the launcher fires a cylindrical object from the ship vertically, generated noise is measured with a hydrophone on the starboard of Chung-hae, Marine surveyor. Three types of cylindrical objects, which have noses of flat-faced, conical, and hemisphere, were used during the experiment. The measured noise exhibits a time-dependency which can be divided into three phases: (1) initial impact phase, (2) open cavity flow phase, (3) cavity collapse and bubble oscillation phase. In most cases, the waveform of bubble oscillation phase is dominant rather than that of initial impact phase. Pinch-off time, where a cavity begins to collapse, occurs at 0.18 ~ 0.2 second and the average lasting time of bubble was 0.9 ~ 1.3 second. The energy of water-entry impact noise is focused in the frequency region lower than 100 Hz, and the generated noise is influenced by the nose shapes, object mass, and launching velocity. As a result, energy spectral density on the bubble frequency is higher in the order of flat-faced, conical, hemisphere nose, and the increase of initial energy raises the energy spectral density on the bubble frequency in the cylinder body of same shape. Finally, we compare the measurements with the simulated signals and spectrum based on the bubble explosion physics, and obtain satisfactory agreements between them.

Journal bearings in the rotating machineries are vulnerable to the contamination or the insufficient supply of lubricating oil, which is likely to be the cause of unexpected shutdown or malfunction of these systems. Various destructive and nondestructive testing methods had been used for the reduction of maintenance cost and the operational safety problems due to the accidents related to bearing damages. In this experimental approach, acoustic emission monitoring is employed to the detection of incipient failure caused by intervention of foreign particles most probable in the journal bearing systems. Experimental schedules for the intervention of foreign particles was composed to be more quantitative and systematic than last study in consideration of minimum oil film thickness and particle size. The experiment was conducted under such designed conditions as inserting alumina particles to the lubrication layer in the simulated journal bearing system. Several parameters such as AE rms level, waveform, AE energy distribution and other AE event parameters are used for analysis and characterization of damage source. The results showed that the history of damage was well correlated with the changes of AE rms level and the type of damage source signal can be verified using other informations such as waveform, distributions of AE parameters etc.
In this paper, we present a speech translation system for hotel reservation, KT_STS(Korea Telecom Speech Translation System). KT-STS is a speech-to-speech translation system which translates a spoken utterance in Korean into one in Japanese. The system has been designed around the task of hotel reservation(dialogues between a Korean customer and a hotel reservation de나 in Japan). It consists of a Korean speech recognition system, a Korean-to-Japanese machine translation system and a korean speech synthesis system. The Korean speech recognition system is an HMM(Hidden Markov model)-based speaker-independent, continuous speech recognizer which can recognize about 300 word vocabularies. Bigram language model is used as a forward language model and dependency grammar is used for a backward language model. For machine translation, we use dependency grammar and direct transfer method. And Korean speech synthesizer uses the demiphones as a synthesis unit and the method of periodic waveform analysis and reallocation. KT-STS runs in nearly real time on the SPARC20 workstation with one TMS320C30 DSP board. We have achieved the word recognition rate of 94. 68% and the sentence recognition rate of 82.42% after the speech recognition tests. On Korean-to-Japanese translation tests, we achieved translation success rate of 100%. We had an international joint experiment in which our system was connected with another system developed by KDD in Japan using the leased line.
Speech enhancement is performed to improve intelligibility and quality of the noise-corrupted speech. In this paper, speech enhancement performance was compared using different loss functions in time and frequency domains. This study proposes a combination of loss functions to utilize advantage of each domain by considering both the details of spectrum and the speech waveform. In our study, Scale Invariant-Source to Noise Ratio (SI-SNR) is used for the time domain loss function, and Mean Squared Error (MSE) is used for the frequency domain, which is calculated over the complex-valued spectrum and magnitude spectrum. The phase loss is obtained using the sin function. Speech enhancement result is evaluated using Source-to-Distortion Ratio (SDR), Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ), and Short-Time Objective Intelligibility (STOI). In order to confirm the result of speech enhancement, resulting spectrograms are also compared. The experimental results over the TIMIT database show the highest performance when using combination of SI-SNR and magnitude loss functions.
3D seismic data processing methods such as full waveform inversion or reverse-time migration require 3D wave propagation modeling and heavy calculations. We compared efficiency and accuracy of a Xeon Phi coprocessor to those of a high-end server CPU using 3D frequency-domain wave propagation modeling. We adopted the OpenMP parallel programming to the time-domain finite difference algorithm by considering the characteristics of the Xeon Phi coprocessors. We applied the Fourier transform using a running-integration to obtain the frequency-domain wavefield. A numerical test on frequency-domain wavefield modeling was performed using the 3D SEG/EAGE salt velocity model. Consequently, we could obtain an accurate frequency-domain wavefield and attain a 1.44x speedup using the Xeon Phi coprocessor compared to the CPU.
It is important to exactly detect the GCI(Glottal Closure Instant) in the speech signal processing. A few methods to detect the GCI of voiced speech have een proposer, untill now. But these are difficult to detect the GCI for wide range of speakers and or various vowel signals. In this paper, we prposed a new method for GCI detection using the G-peak. The speech waveforms are passed through the LPF of variable bandwidth. Then, the GCI's of voiced speech are detected by the G-peak based on the filtered signals. We compared the detected with the eye-checked GCI at the SNR of clean, 20dB, and 0dB. We took into account the range within 1ms between eye-checked and detected GCI. We obtained the result of the detection rate as 97.9% in the clean speech, 96.5% in 20dB SNR, and 94.8% in 0dB SNR, respectively.

The conventional mercury delay method to measure compressional wave velocity of unconsolidated sediment is inconvenient because the signal must be analyzed on the oscilloscope and the mercury column has to be calibrated between measurements. We developed an automated compressional wave velocity measurement technique by connecting an oscilloscope and a PC with a GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) card. The GPIB card buses signals from the oscilloscope to the PC where the signal from a sample is analyzed and compared to the input pulse thereby the compressional wave velocity of the sample is computed and recorded automatically. Differences between the mercury delay method and the automated measurement technique are negligible except the slightly greater velocity in the automated measurement technique. We concluded that the new technique can be used to measure the velocity for unconsolidated marine sediment. It also has an advantage to calculate sediment attenuation through the processing of waveform using the spectral ratio technique.
AVO and complex trace analyses mainly used to characterize natural gas reservoir were tested in this paper for a possible application to detection of major geological discontinuities such as fracture zones. The test data used in this study were calculated by utilizing a viscoelastic numerical program which was based on the generalized Maxwell body for a horizontal fracture model. In AVO analysis of a horizontal fracture zone, p-wave reflection appears to be variant depending upon the acoustic-impedence contrast and the offset distance. The fracture zone is also effectively clarified both in gradient stack and range-limited stack in which fracture zone reflection is attenuated with the increasing offset distance. In complex attribute plots (instantaneous amplitude, frequency, and phase), the top and bottom of the fracture Tone are characterized by a zone of strong amplitudes and an event of the same phase. Low frequency characteristics appear at the fracture zone and the underneath. Amplitude attenuation and waveform dispersion are dependent on Q-contrast between the fracture zone and the surrounding media. They were properly compensated by optimum inverse Q-filtering.
