  • Most of conventional ultrasonic transducers are constructed to generate either longitudinal or shear waves, but not both of them. We investigated the mechanism of dual mode transducers that generates both of the longitudinal and shear waves simultaneously with a single PZT element. A piezoelectric ceramic PZT has the hexagonal 6mm crystal symmetry, after poling. We studied the performance of a PZT element as a function of its rotation angle so that its efficiency is optimized to excite the two waves equally strongly. The results are verified by checking the impedance variation of the element with Finite Element Methods, and checking the wave form by pulse-echo test simulation. Validity of the theoretical calculation is verified through experiments.

  • When applying the nonuniform sampling to noisy speech signal, the required data rate increases to be comparable to or more than that by uniform sampling such as PCM. To solve this problem, we have proposed the waveform coding method, multiband nonuniform waveform coding(MNWC), applying the nonuniform sampling to band-separated speech signal[7]. However, the speech quality is deteriorated when it is compared to the uniform sampling method, since the high band is simply modeled as a Gaussian noise with average level. In this paper, as a good method to overcome this drawback, the high band is modeled as one of 16 codewords having different center frequencies. By doing this, with maintaining high speech quality as MOS score of average 3.16, the proposed method achieves 1.5 times higher compression ratio than that of the conventional nonuniform sampling method(CNSM).

  • In order to investigate the characteristics of oceanic rain noise, we measured ambient noise at a site on the east coast of the Korean Peninsula while it rained. Three hydrophones were placed at a depth of 30 m, 50 m, and 100 m respectively where the water depth was 200 m. The spectral characteristics of rain noise were carefully examined according to rainfall rates between 1.5 and 23.4 mm/h. And the dependence of spectral level on rainfall rate was investigated for various frequencies. Also, it was considered the generation mechanism of rain noise by means of observation of rain noise waveforms received by hydrophone.

  • An electromagnetic induction transducer which radiates an implusive ultrasonic wave, could be useful for high power sound source in underwater acoustical survey. The aim of this study is to investigate the waveforms and the spectral characteristics of the waves produced by the transducer which was on the basis of the design criteria proposed by Eisenmenger. It was found that the sound pressure levels of the impulsive ultrasonic waves were directly proportional to the capacitance of the energy stored in the capacitor and inversely proportional to the thickness of the vibrating copper foil, while the center frequencies and the fractional bandwidths were vice versa.

  • The porcelain insulators are important devices, that are used to isolate electrically and hold mechanically in the high-voltage power transmission systems. The faults of the insulators induce very serious problems to the power transmission line. In this paper, we introduce techniques for fault detections of insulators by acoustic radiation noises from them. We measured radiation noises from normal state insulators and fault state insulators. The used insulators were two different type porcelain insulators, a cut out switch, two different type line posters, and a lightning arrester. Each results was compared each other in time domain, frequency domain and filter banks' outputs. We found the possibility of detection of insulators' faults and also suggested techniques for fault detections.

  • In this paper, we propose a new speech separation algorithm to extract and enhance the target speech signals from mixed speech signals by utilizing both magnitude and phase information. Since the previous statistical modeling algorithms assume that the log power spectrum values of the mixed speech signals are independent in the temporal and frequency domain, discontinuities occur in the resultant separated speech signals. To reduce the discontinuities, we apply a smoothing filter in the time-frequency domain. To further improve speech separation performance, we propose a statistical model based on both magnitude and phase information of speech signals. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm improve signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) by 1.5 dB compared with the previous magnitude-only algorithms.

  • In this paper, we synthesized active sonar target signals based on highlights model, and then carried out target classification using the synthesized signals. If the target aspect angle is changed, the different signals are synthesized. To know the result, two different experiments are done. First, The classification results with respect to each aspect angle are shown. Second, the results in two group in aspect angle are acquired. Time domain feature extraction is done using matched filter and envelope detection. It shows the pattern of each highlights. Artificial neural networks and multi-class SVM are used for classifying target signals.

  • Fiber fracture is one of the dominant failure phenomena affecting the total mechanical Performance of the composites. Fiber fracture locations were measured through the conventional optical microscope and the nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) technique and then were compared together as a function of the epoxy matrix modulus and the fiber surface treatment by the electrodeposition method (ED). Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was measured using tensile fragmentation test in combination of AE method. ED treatment of the fiber surface enlarged the number of fiber fracture locations in comparison to the untreated case. The number of fiber fracture events measured by the AE method was less than optically obtained one. However, fiber fracture locations determined by AE detection corresponded with those by optical observation with small errors. The source location of fiber breaks by AE analysis could be a nondestructive, valuable method to measure interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of matrix in non-, semi- and/or transparent polymer composites.

  • It is widely acknowledged that the human auditory system is organized tonotopically and people generally listen to sounds as a function of frequency distribution through the auditory system. However, it is still unclear how acoustic features of speech sounds are indicated to the human brain in terms of speech perception. Thus, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether two sounds with similar high-frequency characteristics in the acoustic analysis show similar results at the level of auditory brainstem. Thirty three young adults with normal hearing participated in the study. As stimuli, two Korean monosyllables (i.e., /ja/ and /cha/) and four frequencies of toneburst (i.e., 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz) were used to elicit the auditory brainstem response (ABR). Measures of monosyllable and toneburst were highly replicable and the wave V of waveform was detectable in all subjects. In the results of Pearson correlation analysis, the /ja/ syllable had a high correlation with 4000 Hz of toneburst which means that its acoustic characteristics (i.e., 3671~5384 Hz) showed the same results in the brainstem. However, the /cha/ syllable had a high correlation with 1000 and 2000 Hz of toneburst although it has acoustical distribution of 3362~5412 Hz. We concluded that there was disagreement between acoustic features and physiology outcomes at the auditory brainstem level. This finding suggests that an acoustical-perceptual mapping study is needed to scrutinize human speech perception.

  • Interfacial and microfailure properties of the modified steel, carbon and glass fibers/cement composites were investigated using electro-pullout test under tensile and compressive tests with acoustic emission (AE). The hand-sanded steel composite exhibited higher interfacial shear strength (IFSS) than the untreated and even neoalkoxy zirconate (Zr) treated steel fiber composites. This might be due to the enhanced mechanical interlocking, compared to possible hydrogen or covalent bonds. During curing process, the contact resistivity decreased rapidly at the initial stage and then showed a level-off. Comparing to the untreated case, the contact resistivity of either Zr-treated or hand-sanded steel fiber composites increased to the infinity at latter stage. The number of AE signals of hand-sanded steel fiber composite was much more than those of the untreated and Zr-treated cases due to many interlayer failure signals. AE waveforms for pullout and frictional signals of the hand-sanded composite are larger than those of the untreated case. For dual matrix composite (DMC), AE energy and waveform under compressive loading were much higher and larger than those under tensile loading, due to brittle but well-enduring ceramic nature against compressive stress. Vertical multicrack exhibits fur glass fiber composite under tensile test, whereas buckling failure appeared under compressive loading. Electro-micromechanical technique with AE can be used as an efficient nondestructive (NDT) method to evaluate the interfacial and microfailure mechanisms for conductive fibers/brittle and nontransparent cement composites.
