It is well recognized recently that acoustic emission, which is an elastic wave generated from rapid release of elastic energy in steressed solids, is very useful tool for on-line monitoring of microscopic behavior of deformation of material. In this study, three point bend test was performed to evaluate the microscopic damage progress during the loading and failure mechanism of mortar beam by monitoring the characteristic of AE signal. The relationship between AE characteristic and microscopic failure mechanism is discussed. In addition 2 dimensional AE source location based on triangular method was also done to monitor the intiation and propagation of micro crack around notch tip of mortar beam. It was shown that AE source location was very effective to predict the growth behavior of micro crack in mortar beam specimen.

Recently, aerospace structures have lightweight trend in order to reduce the cost of fuel and system, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) can give the ability to reduce weight at 20~50% as the substitution of metal alloy, and there are advantages such as high Non-rigid, specific strength and anti-corrosion, but it is difficult to prove its destruction properties due to heterogeneous structure and anisotropy. In this study we designed specimen, inducing distinguishing destructions of material (for example, matrix crack, fiber breakage, and delamination) by using the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) which is used in a real aircraft, to apply acoustic emission technique to aerospace structures. And we gained data via tensile testing and acoustic emission technique, from which each fault signal was classified respectively by using AE parameters and waveform.

Rotary Compressor has many AE(Acoustic Emission) sources according to condition of parts because it is operated with combination of various parts. In this study, analysis of AE raw signal generated form Rotary compressor which artificially-made parts inflicted abnormal condition was carried out. AE raw signals were acquired form high-speed A/D board, and many burst type signals were observed. By analyzing burst type signals which is caused form internal AE source, efficient AE parameters for monitoring and diagnosis were presented.

A new technique for the source location of acoustic emission (AE) in plates whose thichness are close to or thinner than the wavelength has been studied by introducing wavelet transform de-noising technique. The detected AE signals were pre-processed using wavelet transform to be decomposed into the low-frequency, high-amplitude flexural components and the high-frequency, low-amplitude extensional components. If the wavelet transform de-noising was employed, we could successfully filter out the extensional wave component, one of the critical errors of source location in plates by arrival time difference method. The accuracy of source location appeared to be significantly improved and independent of the setting of gain and threshold, plate thickness, sensor-to-sensor distance, and the relative position of source to sensors. Since the method utilizes the flexural component of relatively high amplitude, it could be applied to very large, thin-walled structures in practice.

Leaks in underground pipelines can cause social, environmental and economical problems. One of relevant countermeasures against leaks is to find and repair of leak points of the pipes. Leak noise is a good source to identify the location of leak points of the pipelines. Although there have been several methods to detect the leak location with leak noise, such as listening rods, hydrophones or ground microphones, they have not been so efficient tools. In this paper, acoustic emission (AE) sensors and accelermeters are used to detect leak locations which could provide all easier and move efficient method. Filtering, signal processing and algorithm of raw input data from sensors for the detection of leak location are described. A 120m-long pipeline system for experiment is installed and the results with the system show that the algorithm with the AE sensors and accelerometers offers accurate pinpointing of leaks. Theoretical analysis of sound wave propagation speed of water in underground pipes, which is critically important in leak locating, is also described.

The SM45C metallic coupons have been tested under static tensile loading with acoustic emission (AE) as the load-deflection curve mainly. In this study, we used AE to detect the yielding of material and AE techniques was applied to rapidly estimate the mechanical characteristics of a material. First, coupons without an artificial defect were tested at different cross-head speed. For all cases in this analysis, yielding point of SM45C coupons did not appear definitely compared to mild steel, whereas coupons start to generate AE counts upon yielding. So all cases are normalized to know the possibility of accelerated life test of a material. And next, coupons with different from sizes of circular hole defects were tested at the same cross-head speed of 5 mm/min. Results were classified into 3 classes and analyzed by AE amplitude & signal strength as a function of time. Summarizing the specific conclusions, we need to additional research considering plate with width-ratio in order to estimate the fracture mechanism.

Aerospace structures need high stability and long life because many personal injuries can result from an accident and securing structural integrity for various external environments is more important than any other thing. So first of all we must prove the destruction properties for operating environment, have prediction technology about damage evolution and life, and develop an economical non-destructive technology capable of detecting structure damage. Acoustic emission (AE) have no need of artificial environment like ultrasonic inspection or radio fluoroscopy to emit a certain energy, is a testing technique using seismic signal resulting from interior changes of solids, and enables to observe if any fault is appeared and it grows seriously or not while running. In this study we suggest the method of structural integrity evaluation for aerospace structures through the acoustic emission technique, for which a model plane was manufactured and an actual operation test was conducted.

The purpose of this thesis is to reduce of error for source location through acoustic emission(AE) signal, generated elastic wave from crack growth to leak for facility diagnosis. Especially, in order to overcome noise from original signal, this paper proposed enhancement of source location by using noise reduction based on wavelet transform. To evaluate actual performance in experiments, Pencil Lead Break is used crack signal source on the aluminum plate and drain valve of air compressor is used as substitute pressure vessel to generate leak signal. In signal processing, wavelet shrinkage and soft threshold are used to discriminate signal source and then source location techniques have been effectively used with group velocity using material property and time difference between sensor using cross correlation. Source location for crack and leak test have some difference, but the result show that improved 30% with a average length within 10.46mm in crack test and improved 2% compare with average filter in leak test when we applied wavelet transform.

An in-process estimation of the ground surface roughness is a bottle-neck and an essential field in conventional grinding operation. We defined the dimensionless average roughness factor (D.A.R.F) that exhibits a roughness characteristics of ground surface. The D.A.R.F was composed easily of the absolute average and the standard deviation values which were the analytic parameters of the acoustic emission (AE) signal generated during the machining process. The theoretical equation between the surface roughness and the D.A.R.F has been derived from the linear regressive analysis and verified its availability through the experimentation on the surface grinding machine.
Interfacial and microfailure properties of the modified steel, carbon and glass fibers/cement composites were investigated using electro-pullout test under tensile and compressive tests with acoustic emission (AE). The hand-sanded steel composite exhibited higher interfacial shear strength (IFSS) than the untreated and even neoalkoxy zirconate (Zr) treated steel fiber composites. This might be due to the enhanced mechanical interlocking, compared to possible hydrogen or covalent bonds. During curing process, the contact resistivity decreased rapidly at the initial stage and then showed a level-off. Comparing to the untreated case, the contact resistivity of either Zr-treated or hand-sanded steel fiber composites increased to the infinity at latter stage. The number of AE signals of hand-sanded steel fiber composite was much more than those of the untreated and Zr-treated cases due to many interlayer failure signals. AE waveforms for pullout and frictional signals of the hand-sanded composite are larger than those of the untreated case. For dual matrix composite (DMC), AE energy and waveform under compressive loading were much higher and larger than those under tensile loading, due to brittle but well-enduring ceramic nature against compressive stress. Vertical multicrack exhibits fur glass fiber composite under tensile test, whereas buckling failure appeared under compressive loading. Electro-micromechanical technique with AE can be used as an efficient nondestructive (NDT) method to evaluate the interfacial and microfailure mechanisms for conductive fibers/brittle and nontransparent cement composites.
