The Effects of Driving Confidence Level on Dangerous Driving Behaviors in the Novice Drivers: A Path Analysis Study (초보운전자의 운전확신수준이 위험운전에 미치는 영향: 경로분석을 이용한 연구)

  • This study focused on novice drivers. Novice drivers get involved in more traffic accidents than the other drivers because of less driving experience. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between driving confidence levels and speeding, drunken driving, and traffic accidents. 192 drivers responded driving confidence levels questionnaire and driving experience items. 'Circumstance Insensibility', 'Unsafe Driving', 'Incautious Driving', and 'Self-efficacy of Driving' had significant relations with speeding in novice divers group. Especially, 'Circumstance Insensibility' showed a significant relation with speeding, drunken driving and traffic accidents. In the result of path analysis, driving confidence levels explained 22% of the speeding, 12% of the drunken driving and 21% of the traffic accidents in novice drivers group. 'Circumstance Insensibility' was most effective for traffic accidents of novice drivers. We verified that 'Self-efficacy of Driving' affects on traffic accidents via speeding.

  • Vehicles are used in daily life as convenient transport, it is important to authenticate driver because vehicles are controlled by driver. Especially, in these days, there is a discussion on introduction of Driving Under the Influence car-starting locking device installation for preventing accidents caused by Driving Under the Influence of alcohol, these car-starting locking device installation requires a lot of money and time. Suitable user authentication for solving user's inconvenience during the disabled and men of national merit to receive discount benefits is needed. In this paper, For solving these problems, we propose the efficient vehicle control and user authentication system for preventing driving under the influence and providing the disabled and men of national merit benefit based on driver authentication by using user's smartphone NFC communication and user's biometric information.

The Effects of Alcohol on Psychomotor Skill and Driving Behaviors (알코올이 정신운동 및 운전행태에 미치는 영향)

  • In Korea, 28,641 cases of traffic accidents were caused by drunk driving in 2010. These statistics accounted for 12.62% of total number of traffic accidents. Moreover, the percentages of deaths and injuries from them were nearly 15% of those from whole traffic accidents. While police has emphasized enforcement efforts in order to reduce drunk driving, culture generous to drunk driving in addition to the absence of an appropriate intervention system for habitual drunk drivers have contributed to the increasing number of the drunk driving accidents in Korea. This study examined specific behavioral changes in drunk driving by comparing drivers' behavior pattern in non-alcoholic condition to those in alcoholic condition, using a psychomotor test and a driving simulator. In the psychomotor test measuring participants' reactions to the target stimulus, it was revealed that participants' correct responses were decreased, false responses were increased, and no responses also were increased after drinking. Furthermore, in the driving simulator performance after drinking, not only driving speed was faster but also the deviation of an accelerator pedal pressure and of the vehicle's lateral position were much increased. These results indicated that alcohol consumption would impair visio-cognitive ability and deteriorate driving safety. Finally, the implications and limitations of our findings and suggestions for the future research were discussed.

  • Driving after drinking is highly likely to cause accidents due to lack of responsibility and poor judgment. South Korea is seeking a sentence for accidental drinking accidents. The suspended jail term for drunk drivers accounts for more than 70 percent of the total. However, those who come to the probation office during the probation period are involuntary, subject to little motivation for change, and the large-scale, collective, and short-term education offered to them is limited in preventing re-off. In addition to small group and long-term education, we conducted intensive short-term interventions to see changes in drinking habits in three months. In the long run, the effectiveness of drinking control will be demonsstrated, making a difference in improving the programs offered to drunk drivers in the future. Drunk driving accouts for a very high percentage of the causes of traffic accidents, which, like many countries around the world, should make efforts to prevent and punish drunk driving.

  • 교통량의 급속한 증가에 의해 교통사고 발생건수는 34년동안 무려 50배가 증가하였다. 또한, 교통사고 사망자수도 매년 5.1%씩 증가하고 있다. 본 논문의 목적은 속초경찰서에서 실시하고 있는 음주운전 단속의 문제점 및 개선방안을 조사-분석하고, 사고지점의 도로환경이 전한가를 분석하는 데 있다. 본 연구를 통해 속초경찰서의 음주단속지점 위치가 변하지 않고 동일하여 많은 음주운전자가 있음에도 불구하고 단속이 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 사례연구에서도 알 수 있듯이 단속시간이 야간에 편중되어 있어 낮에 이루어지는 음주운전에는 안일한 자세를 취하고 있다. 그러므로, 앞으로 단속지점의 변화와 단속시간을 늘려 음주운전자 및 음주사고를 줄여야 하겠다.

Influence of the change of driving confidence level upon driving behavior in the age groups (운전확신수준의 변화가 연령별 운전행동에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this research is to study the relation between the change of driver's driving confidence level in the age categories and driving behavior. To survey the driving confidence level, we used the 'Driving Confidence Scale' questionnaire and surveyed the drive career, mileage, driving days, violation of traffic regulation (drunk driving, overspeed), traffic accident experience (assaulter, sufferer) together. The subjects of investigation were from 19-year-old to 80-year-old and 1,055 persons were participated in the research totally. To examinethe structure of driving confidence level, we executed the factor analysis. We compared the driving confidence level in the age categories (under 29-year-old, 30~39, 40~49, 50~64, over 65-year-old) and studied the relation between driving confidence level and driving behavior. Driving confidence level was composed of 4 factors such as 'insensibility to situation', 'unsafe driving', 'careless concentration' and 'self-efficacy of driving', and there was decreasing tendency for driving confidence level and overall driving behavior according to increasing age. Driving confidence level had the interrelation with age range, assaulting accident, suffered accident, driving period, drunk driving, overspeed, driving career and so on. We examined the difference of driving confidence level and driving behavior by dividing the participated drivers' groups into the traffic accident experienced group, drunk driving group and overspeed driving group, and there was a significant difference on driving confidence level and driving behavior between the group who had not experienced the violation of traffic regulation or traffic accident and another group who had experienced the violation of traffic regulation or traffic accident.

A research on regional differences in traffic environments and driver's behaviors in Korea (교통환경과 운전자 행동 요인의 전국 지역별 비교)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences in the traffic environments and driving behaviors in 5 regions of Korea. Data were collected through the survey research from 1387 passenger car drivers in 14 locations in Korea. The main findings of this research are as followings: First of all, There were significant differences in traffic environment factors(road topography, construction, road & safety facilities, pedestrian behaviors, surrounding drivers) among 5 regional areas. When we examined drivers factors, there were significant differences among 5 metropolitan areas on wearing seat belt, most of constructions related to drink driving, speed-limit violation. There were many differences in driving habits, intentions, behaviors including wearing seat belt, driving after drinking according to metropolitan area, and also in case of speed-limit violation and careless driving behavior. These results suggested that there are many differences in traffic environments and driver's behaviors among regional areas. These result suggests that traffic safety policy and practice should be prepared based upon the peculiarities of regional area. We discussed these resulte in terms of the regional traffic policy and the suggestions for future studies were added.

  • Traffic accidents are caused by several factors such as drivers, vehicles, and road environment. It is necessary to investigate and analyze them in advance to prevent similar and repetitive traffic accidents. Especially, the human factor is most significant element and traffic accidents by drinking-driving caused from human factor have become social problem to be paid attention to. The study analyzes traffic accidents resulting from drinking-driving and the effects of driver's attributes and environmental factors on them. The study is composed as two parts. First, the log-linear model is applied to analyze that accidents by drinking or non-drinking driving associate with road geometry, weather condition and personal characteristics. Probability is tested for drinking-driving accidents relative to non-drinking drive accidents. The study analyzes probability differences between genders, between ages, and between kinds of vehicles through odds multipliers. Second, traffic accidents related to drinking are classified into property damage, minor injury, heavy injury, and death according to their severity. Heavy injury is more serious than minor one and death is more serious than heavy injury. The ordinal regression models are established to find effecting factors on traffic accident severity.

Analysis of Effectiveness of Traffic Safety Education on DWI(Driving While Intoxicated) Deterrence (교통안전교육의 음주운전억제 효과분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the deterrence effect of traffic safety education on DWI(Driving While Intoxicated) offenders which is proposed as a incentive policy measure. For the analysis, 3512 drivers whose licenses were suspended due to DWI offence within the jurisdiction of Seongnam city in 2003, and whose driving behavior were traced for 5 years are collected. MOEs used in the study are the number of repeated DWI offence and DWI abidance duration. The statistics of analysis of covariance are used to compare the deterrence effectiveness of traffic safety education by adjusted means between groups. The results show that compared to uneducated group, educated group reveals to make less number of repeated DWI offence with longer DWI abidance period The resulting statistic also shows that active participation in the discussion during the class is more effective than just giving lecture. The former way for education can further reduce the repeated DWI by 12% and increase DWI abidance duration by 5.7% than the latter.
