Ion exchange is a chemical reaction between the ions in solution phase and ions in solid phase and is widely used in softening, demineralization, removal and collection of specific ions, and ion migration in the ground water. The ion selectivity depends on the charge and the hydrated radius of ion. The objective of this study was to examine the applicability of anion selectivity obtained from the ion exchange equilibrium OH/sup -/ < F/sup -/ < HCO/sup -/ < Cl/sup -/ < Br/sup -/ ≤ NO₃/sup -/ < SO₄/sup 2-/ to the column ion exchange. The column ion exchange was facilitated in the lower charge of counter-ion in the background electrolyte.
A research was conducted on the removal of ion from the solution involving the alkali metal ion and chlorine ion using ion exchange resin. The cation exchange resin and anion exchange resin was used for the remove of metal ion (Na+ and K+) and chlorine ion (Cl-), respectively. In the case of solution A (involving 36,633 ppm of Na+ and 57,921 ppm of Cl-), the Na+ ion and Cl- ion were removed over 99% within 20 min. In the case of solution B (involving 1,638 ppm of K+), the K+ ion was removed over 99% within 3 min.
A study on the destruction of organic cation and anion exchange resins by electro-generated Ag(II) as a mediator was carried out to develop the ambient-temperature aqueous process, known as Ag(II)-mediated electro-chemical oxidation (MEO) process, for the treatment of a large quantity of spent organic ion exchange resins as the low and Intermediated-level radioactive wastes arising from the operation, maintenance and repairs of nuclear facilities. The effects of controllable process parameters such as applied current density, temperature, and nitric acid concentration on the MEO of organic ion exchange resins were investigated. The cation exchange resin was completely decomposed to $CO_2$. The current efficiency increased with a decrease in applied current density while nitric acid concentration and temperature on the MEO of cation exchange resin did not affect the MEO. On the other hand, anion exchange resins were decomposed to CO and $CO_2$. The ultimate conversion to CO was about $10\%$ regardless of temperature. The destruction efficiencies to $CO_2$ were dependent upon temperature and the effective destruction of anion exchange resin could be obtained above $60^{\circ}C$.

The adsorption/desorption behavior and separation conditions of vanadium and tungsten ions were investigated using a gel-type anion-exchange resin. In the adsorption experiment with the initial acidity of the solution, the adsorption rate of vanadium was remarkably low in strong acids and bases. Additionally, the adsorption rate of tungsten was low in a strong base. An increase in the reaction temperature increased the adsorption reaction rate and maximum adsorption. The effect of tungsten on the maximum adsorption was minimal. The adsorption isotherms of vanadium and tungsten on the ion-exchange resin were suitable for the Langmuir adsorption isotherms of both the ions. For tungsten, the adsorption isotherms of vanadium and tungsten were polyoxometalate. Both ion-exchange resins were simulated using similar quadratic reaction rate models. Vanadium was desorbed in the aqueous solutions of HCl or NaOH, the desorption characteristics of vanadium and tungsten depended on the desorption solution, and tungsten was desorbed in the aqueous solution of NaOH. It was possible to separate the two ions using the desorption process. The desorption reaction reached equilibrium within 30 min, and more than 90% recovery was possible.
The synthesises of anion exchange resin from 4vinylpyridine-divinyIbenzene(4-VP-DVB) were intented to separate boron ion. The heterogeneous anion exchange membranes were prepared with polyethylene(PE) matrix bythe hot press method. The prepared exchange membranes were characterized by FT-IR, conductormeter and pH meter to confirm structural, mechanical and electrochemical properties. Their capacities were measured by changing floe rate and voltage. The best seperation capacity was appeared in the heterogeneous membrane which contains 50 wt % 4-VP-DVB resin within PE matrix. The heterogeneous membranes treated with acid were better than that treated with water. Results from this experiment were indicated that the optimal flow rate, voltage. and time in the seperation of boron ion were lOml/min, 18volts, and 4 hours respectively.
The elution behaviors of the rare earths was carried out in the iminodiacetic acid solution of various pH as eluent using ion exchange resin. The optimum eluent for the quantitative separation of $Eu^{3+},\;Pr^{3+},\;Ce^{3+}\;and\;La^{3+}$ were 0.0301M IMDA solution of pH 8.00 and 9.00 at 5cm column of the resin Dowex 50${\times}$8 (100-200 mesh). The elution order of the rare earth elements was in order of the atomic number of those elements. From the elution behavior of rare earth and u.v spectrum we found that the complexed rare earth species with IMDA changed according to pH of IMDA.

The simulated nuclear spent fuel (SIMFUEL) containing the platinum group elements which will not be dissolved in a nitric acid was completely dissolved with a acid digestion bomb. The metallic elements separated in the SIMFUEL were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Because the peaks of metallic elements were spectrally interfered by uranium spectrum, uranium and metallic elements were separated by cation exchange resin for Mo, Pd, Rh and Ru and by anion exchange resin for Ba, Ce, La, Nd, Rh, Sr, Y and Zr, respectively. The recovery of Mo, Pd, Rh and Ru after separation by cation exchange chromatography found to be 99-103% and anion exchange separation showed 96.5-107% of recovery except Y with the simulated solution whose concentration was similar to the spent nuclear fuel. The relative standard deviation of this method showed 1.3-6.7% in the SIMFUEL whose concentrations of metallic elements were between several $10^2-10^3$ppm.

In this study, we studied the characteristics of ion exchange for treatment of HSS (heat stable salts) which cause performance reduction in CO2 gas capture amine solution using anion exchange resins. The optimum HSS removal efficiency, 96.1% was obtained when using strong base anion exchange resin SAR10 at dosage 0.05 g/mL, 316 K, pH 12 and the best resin regeneration efficiency, 78.8% was obtained using NaOH solution of 3 M at 316 K. The adsorption data were described well by the Freundlich model and the sorption intensity(n) was 2.0951 lying within the range of favorable adsorption. The adsorption selectivity coefficients were increased by increasing valences and size of ion and desorption selectivity coefficients showed a contradictory tendency to adsorption selectivity coefficients. By continuous HSS removal experiments, 13.3 BV of HSS contaminated solution was effectively treated and the optimum NaOH solution consumption was 5.2 BV to regenerate resins.

A determination method of trace nickel and cobalt in water samples was studied and developed by adsorbing their complexes on ion exchange resin suspension. The analytical ions were formed as complexes with a ligand of APDC (ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate) and adsorbed on anion exchange resin of Dowex 2-X8. After the suspension was filtered out with membrane filter, the complexes were dissolved in HCl solution by an ultrasonic vibrator for ET-AAS determination. Several conditions were optimized as followings. pH of sample solution: 5.0, amount of ligand APDC: more than 430 times in mole ratio, the type and concentration of acid: 0.1 M HCl, and vibration time: 7 minutes. The addition of palladium in the HCl solution could improve the reproducibility and sensitivity by a matrix modification in the absorbance measurement. This procedure was applied for the analysis of three kinds of real water samples. The detection limits equivalent to 3 times standard deviation of blank were Co 0.36 ng/mL and Ni 0.27 ng/mL and recoveries in spiked samples were 99-102% for cobalt and 100-105% for nickel.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the applicability of adsorption models for adsorption properties of adsorbents. For this study, adsorption experiment of $NO_3^-$ ion using anion exchange resin has been investigated under adsorption equilibrium and kinetic in bach process. Adsorption equilibrium experiment were carried out that two conditions is change of adsorbate concentration and change of adsorbent weight. Experiment results have been analyzed by adsorption isotherm models, energy models and kinetic models. Under the condition of change of adsorbate concentration was best described by Sips and Redlich-Perterson isotherm models. However case of change of adsorbent weight was described by Langmuir isotherm models. It seems reasonable to assume that isotherm model was dominated by multiple mechanism according to experiment condition.
