The purpose of this study was to examine the use of music by international college students in Korea. A questionnaire was administered to foreign college students. The questionnaire was composed of 25 items regarding use of music, the purpose of music use, and demographic information. A total of 150 questionnaires were distributed, and 81 questionnaires were returned. Incomplete questionnaires were excluded, and the remaining 69 questionnaires were analyzed. The results of this study were as follows. First, international students in Korea preferred listening to music over playing instruments or singing and mostly listened to popular music in their dormitory alone. They mostly listened to popular songs with love related themes and preferred music from their own country over Korean music. Second, in terms of the purpose behind music use, comfort was the reason reported most frequently, followed by mood change, enjoyment, sense of belonging, and sense of achievement. Third, there were no significant differences in use of music depending on individual factors (e.g., gender, length of residence in Korea, length of previous music education), but significant differences were found for using music for the purpose of mood change and sense of belonging based on respondents' length of residence in Korea. The results of this study may contribute to the development of musical programs for cultural adaptation and psycho-emotional support for international students in Korea.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of group music therapy for at-risk Korean soldiers on the levels of adjustment and stress. The study was conducted at a division of the Korean Army with 7 participants who were classified as "at-risk soldiers" based on the results of a psychiatric evaluation, MMPI-II and a personal interview with a counselor. The participants received 12 hours of group music therapy for three weeks and their scores on stress and adjustment inventories were compared before and after the treatment. The pre and post scores were analyzed with the Wilcoxon test for repeated measures. The results revealed that the overall stress level was significantly decreased while there was no significant improvement in the adjustment levels at p < .05. The research findings and personal remarks from the participants suggest that group music therapy may provide effective support for at-risk Korean soldiers in coping with stress and adjustment to military life.
Music plays significant roles in the process of human development. The requirement in each process of development can be encouraged by children's participating in various musical activity and so the musical circumstance can make an important factor. Acknowledging that, there were some attempts to use music as a means of treatment or education for children. The subjects of clinic studies in music therapy, especially in Korea, have mainly been children with delay or disability in development. The purpose of this article is focused on collecting and analyzing articles which are written about children who are the main subjects of clinic studies. By collecting and analyzing those articles, the tendency of domestic studies about music therapy concerned with children can be widely examined. Ninety thesis about music therapy related with normal and disabled children have been collected and analyzed considering the subjects, methods, fields of the studies and musical intervention. The conclusions are the same with followings. First, considering the subjects, the studies on children with disabilities are more than normal children and the studies on autistic children occupy the largest portion of them Recently the studies on normal children have been increased as well as the studies on children with disability. Second, for the methods1 experimental studies have been performed more widely than descriptive studies. Third, considering the fields of development, the studies on the social field occupies the largest part of all and they are followed by emotion, language and communication, cognition in turn. Last, in case of musical intervention, it is clear that musical intervention is more used as forms of singing songs and playing instruments than special skills of music. Through this article, the achievements and shortcomings in this territory could be possibly shown at the same time. Moreover, the direction which it has to move toward could be shown.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the musical activities and musical preference according to coping strategy of university students. The survey was conducted to 200 students and the data of 168 was analysed. The results of the research are as follows. First, the number of problem-solving coping was the highest, and the number of emotional-alleviate coping was the lowest. And coping strategy between male and female student showed a significant difference. Second, music listening was the most preferred activity. There was a significant difference in the most preferred activity between male and female students, also between active and inactive coping strategy. However, the most doing activity between music major students and non-music major students showed a significant difference. In addition, there was a significant differences in the purpose of playing instruments between male and female students and among academic year. Third, Korean-pop was the most preferred genre. Result showed a significant difference in preferred musical elements between male and female students. There were genre, melody, loudness, and theme of lyric. Meanwhile, preferred musical elements between active and inactive coping strategy showed a statistical differences. There were rhythm, timbre, and medium of listening. Finally, there were statistical differences in the preferred harmony and familiarity between music major students and non-music major students.
The sound design performed in the production of media contents, such as TV, movie, and CF, have been conducted through the experienced feeling of some experts in the aspect of auditory effects that communicates stories. Also, there have been few studies of the quantitative approach and verification to apply visual and auditory effects felt by users. This study is a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design and investigates the difference in communication effects in which the difference in a sound design in the production of media contents that affects users. This study analyzed the brain quotient (BQ) obtained by the measurement of brain waves during the watching of an experiment image (track A) designed by using a 60-second TV CF only and an experiment image (track B) designed by sound effects and music and investigated which sound design represents differences in communication effects for users. The results of this investigation can be summarized as follows: First, in the results of the comparison of the attention quotient (ATQ), which is the BQ of recognition effects, between A and B tracks, the track A showed a higher difference in activation than the track B. It can be analyzed that the sound design based on music showed higher levels in attention and concentration than that of the sound effect design. Second, in the results of the comparison of the emotional quotient (EQ), which is emotional effects, between A and B tracks, the track A represented a higher difference than the track B. It means that the sound design based on music showed higher contribution levels in emotional effects than that of the design based on sound effects. Third, in the results of the comparison of the left and right brain equivalent quotient (ACQ), which is memory activation effects, between A and B tracks, there were no significant differences. In the results of the experiments, although there are some constraints in TV CF based on the conventional theories in which sound effects based design affects strong concentration, and music based design affects emotional feeling, the music based design may present more effects in continued concentration. In addition, it was evident that the music based design showed higher effects in emotional aspects. However, it is necessary to continue the study by increasing the number of subjects for improving the little differences in ACQ. This study is useful to investigate the communication effects of the sound based design in media contents as a quantitative manner through measuring brain waves and expect the results of this study as the basic materials in the fields of sound production.
This paper operated the effect based on children's emotion using multimedia activity. The defferent of group were operation group based on multimedea activity that higher than the group that listened children's story and represent the significant result on statistics. The children multimedia activity promoted emotion intelegent representing feeling.
The purpose of this research was to review the music choices of GIM therapists in GIM. Seven databases and nine music therapy journals were searched with keywords such as "Guided Imagery and Music", "GIM", "Helen Bonny", "Bonny method", "Music and Imagery" and "BMGIM" between 1964 to 2013. Every abstract was confirmed to see whether it meets this research topic. 12 of 126 articles that described the reasons for music choices were selected. It is the result of narrative literature review that GIM therapists chose music to match clients' qualities of moods, emotions, feelings related with issues and clients' themes in therapy. In 5 articles among the 12 articles, authors chose music with considering music elements analytically to match clients' states. Reasonable explanations for music choice were reviewed in these 5 articles. There were limitations to obtain common facts between articles because most of 126 articles were case studies which described from therapists's point of view in a qualitative way. A more fundamental research is required to obtain rationales of music choices in GIM as a music-centered music psychotherapy for the further research.
This study aimed to examine the effects of songwriting on the self-acceptance of adolescent in palliative care. Three participants were recruited from a university hospital in an urban area in South Korea. The songwriting intervention was conducted in six sessions, and each session was composed of an introduction, song writing and wrap-up. Participants were asked to complete the Unconditional Self-Acceptance Questionnaire (USAQ) before and after the intervention. Their verbal expressions and written song lyrics observed during the intervention were also measured. The results showed that the USAQ scores increased after the intervention, indicating the improvement in their acceptance of the self without judgement or high reactivity to feedback. In addition, the participants exhibited greater recognition of their emotions and acceptance of themselves as they are. They were also better able to discover internal resources and psychological competence. The participants reported that they could more freely express their emotions through song writing and that recording the songs they created was a means of communicating their feelings to others. Based on this study, it is expected that adolescents in palliative care will be able to experience self-acceptance through such brief song writing interventions.
This qualitative study investigated how a music therapy program was experienced by juvenile offenders of school violence who were under a conditional suspension of indictment. Six adolescents participated in 12 consecutive weeks of group music therapy sessions, and were interviewed individually based on open-ended questions addressing key constructs of self-determination theory, which are autonomy, competence and relatedness. Using this framework, data was deductively analyzed using a modified grounded theory. The analysis also investigated how such impact of music therapy transferred or expanded to their everyday life. The analysis revealed that the properties of autonomy included making choices of songs and instruments, deciding how to play, and expressing opinions about music. Competence was associated with developing skills on musical instruments, creating own music, concentrating on their own project, and demonstrating their abilities. Relatedness were related to collaborating, exchanging opinions, and playing a part in musical projects. In addition, it was found that they also experienced shifts in consciousness and behavior, expanded self-awareness, and mutual exchange and group support. Lastly, it was revealed that the positive emotional and behavioral changes they experienced in music also appeared in their school life.
This case used MI techniques that give an imagery experience to depressed client's mental resource, and that makes in to verbalism. Also those images are supportive level therapy examples that apply to positive variation. MI is simple word of 'Music and Imagery' with one of psychology cure called GIM(Guided Imagery and Music). It makes client can through to the inner world and search, confront, discern and solve with suitable music. Supportive Level MI is only used from safety level music. Introduction of private session can associate specification feeling, subject, word or image. And those images are guide to positive experience. The First session step of MI program is a prelude that makes concrete goal like first interview. The Second step is a transition that can concretely express about client's story. The third step is induction and music listening. And it helps to associate imagery more easily by used tension relaxation. Also it can search and associate about various imagery from the music. The last step is process that process drawing imagery, talking about personal imagery experience in common with therapist that bring the power by expansion the positive experience. Client A case targets rapport forming(empathy, understanding and support), searching positive recourse(child hood, family), client's emotion and positive support. Music must be used simple tone, repetition melody, steady rhythm and organized by harmony music of what therapist and client's preference. The client used defense mechanism and couldn't control emotion by depression in 1 & 2 sessions. But the result was client A could experience about support and understanding after 3 sessions. After session 4 the client had stable, changed to positive emotion from the negative emotion and found her spontaneous. Therefore, at the session 6, the client recognized that she will have step of positive time at the future. About client B, she established rapport forming(empathy, understanding and support) and searching issues and positive recognition(child hood, family), expression and insight(present, future). The music was comfortable, organizational at the session 1 & 2, but after session 3, its development was getting bigger and the main melody changed variation with high and low of tune. Also it used the classic and romantic music. The client avoids bad personal relations to religious relationship. But at the session 1 & 2, client had supportive experience and empathy because of her favorite, supportive music. After session 3, client B recognized and face to face the present issue. But she had avoidance and face to face of ambivalence. The client B had a experience about emotion change according depression and face to face client's issues After session 4. At the session 5 & 6, client tried to have will power of healthy life and fairly attitude, train mental power and solution attitude in the future. On this wise, MI program had actuality and clients' issues solution more than GIM program. MI can solute the issue by client's based issue without approach to unconsciousness like GIM. Especially it can use variety music and listening time is shorter than GIM and structuralize. Also can express client's emotion very well. So it can use corrective and complement MI program to children, adolescent and adult.
