  • The purpose of this study was to investigate if a positive psychological-based music therapy program for gambling addicts' families, causes explicit or implicit attitude change towards gambling addicts. The study focused on families with gambling addicts, who use counseling centers for gambling addiction, or participate in GAM-ANON (GA). The experimental group (n=11) participated in 8 sessions of a positive psychology-based group music therapy program, and the control group (n=8) participated in 8 sessions of personal counseling, or GA family gatherings. To confirm treatment effectiveness, the attitude towards the family relationship, was measured by the explicit (Family Relation Scale) and Implicit Association Task (IAT) methods. Additionally, change in emotions including and anger (PANAS, HBDIS), was measured. Results of the study showed that positive emotions increased significantly, in the positive psychotherapy-based music therapy group compared, to the control group. However, in the treatment group with implicit attitudes, the rate of association of negative words with families accelerated significantly, suggesting that gambling addicts' families may have higher negative emotions. For the future, we discussed the necessity of providing a treatment program, that can directly lead to changes in attitudes of family members of gambling addicts.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze musical songs from an academic perspective by applying vocal techniques that can express songs in depth in three dimensions. Singing a musical song cannot be completed with just the musical part, rather, it should be accompanied by the analysis of various aspects such as the emotional state of the scenes and the characters. To this end, this study performed a multi-dimensional analysis of fields such as theatrical structure, lyrics, musical structure, and dynamics. In addition, the study explored and applied Estill Voice Training(EVT) that actors can best express songs with the emotions of the theater and music. EVT categorizes voice into six tones: speech, sob/cry, falsetto, twang, opera, and belting. In this study, in addition to these six sounds, the positions of vocal cords and larynx were also applied to seek ways to effectively express songs using "Gar Nichts" from the musical "Elisabeth" as a case study. "Gar Nichts" is a song sung by the protagonist Elisabeth, which expresses the self and the conflict at the peak of pain. Musically, this song requires various sound and voice-changing techniques to cover the range of "G#3-Gb5." As a result, it was confirmed that in order to embody the emotions of the characters and the songs in depth, the analysis of scenes and characters as well as various singing techniques need to be applied in harmony.

  • This study aimed to examine the current state of music therapy for adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) by conducting a survey of music therapists. Completed surveys from 32 certified music therapists were included for analysis. The questionnaire was composed of 38 items that asked about the participants' background, work environment and music therapy implementation experience (including assessment, goal establishment, intervention strategy and difficulties). The results of the study showed that music therapy for adults with ID was practiced in diverse facilities. Enhancing social interaction was the most frequently set goal by music therapists, whereas facilities mostly required the music therapy services for emotional stability. Also, instrument playing was used most among music activities, and musical structure was considered most when choosing music for therapy. Among the influential institutional factors, characteristics of the facility were considered most frequently, and the level of functioning was the most considered in terms of client-related factors. To advance the effective use of music therapy interventions with adults with ID, development of music therapy assessment tools and more active communication with facility staff were also suggested when working with this population.

  • The musical interval tells how two different pitches are related to each other. In this paper, 2 experiments examined the existence of a culture-specific system in the perception of musical intervals. These experiments evaluated the discrimination performance by the western-music experts and non-experts. The observed results demonstrate a quite different pattern compared to that of the western-culture. In these experiments. the perfect fourth's perceptual stability was clearly shown. This is significant in terms of the musical-processing system that reflects the culture-specific emotion in the domain of music. Even though we are widely exposed by the Western-tonal music. it is assumed that we have a certain type of gravity within our own musical pitch system. It has suggested that, for an advanced research, we need to carry out the tasks, requiring more empirical data independently from that of the western listeners.

  • Music affects sensitivity and emotion of human, emotional power of the music has been applied to various fields. Especially, to visualize as well as listen to music is able to create various atmosphere. In this paper, we proposed sensitivity control system for interaction with people to merge music and lighting. Because existing FT(Fourier Transform) has not information about the time, to analyze information of changed signal according to the time is difficult. In order to solve such a problem, we use STFT(Short Time Fourier Transform) method to analyze music signal. and also, we classified music for three genre and compared the frequency characteristics according to genre, and control the color, brightness of LED light based on the frequency components within analysis range. Unlike existing LED lighting control study using music, we had color control of emotional lighting and brightness control using variation amount of music signal in this paper. Proposed lighting control system will be able to utilize various industry fields as well as emotional lighting.

  • Terminal pediatric patient include congenital metabolic abnormalities, chromosome aberrations, congenital anomalies, neuromuscular diseases and other incurable conditions as well as malignant tumors. One third of these diseases are cancers, and two thirds of cancers are lymphadenoma and leukemia. Terminal pediatric patient may feel fear, anger and frustration against treatment process in hospitals, lose control of themselves and stay in helplessness due to restrictions within controlled hospital environment. This study examined the relationship between hospitalized childrens behavior and music using Contextual Support Model of Music Therapya theory stating therapeutic music environments possess three elements of Structure, Autonomy support and Involvement, and increase childrens active engagement. Focused on these three therapeutic elements, this study analyzed music therapy cases of terminally ill children to examine the relationship between childrens behavior and music as environmental supportive medium in the environment. This study is on a single case case subject, a 10-year-old girl with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Nine sessions of music therapy activities were conducted and analyzed using qualitative method. Focusing on three therapeutic elements of Contextual Support Model, analysis of sessions was made on the basis of activities specifically designed for this study. Main music therapy activities included singing while playing musical instruments, singing while listening to music through CD player, making up songs, and searching for song lines. The findings of this study are as follows: a) in terms of Structure, music therapy suggested a direction for effective musical activities for terminally ill children by providing environments where child can sing, play musical instruments and make up songs; b) in terms of Autonomy support, music therapy encouraged childs voluntary participation by giving her chances to make choice while singing or playing musical instruments; c) in terms of Involvement, child could gain positive approval of the therapist and conduct musical activities in cooperation with the therapist. Music therapy serves as supportive medium in the environment, develops spontaneity and self-reliance in emotionally depressed children, and promotes voluntary attitudes in the restricted hospital environment. Based on the positive effects of music therapy, more studies need to be conducted with an approach to more various terminal pediatric patients.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a research protocol that provides standardized conditioning stimuli in effectively evoking emotion-specific responses in children. The protocol targets five specific emotions(i.e., happiness, sadness, anger, distress, and boredom) by introducing study participants to a combination of music, color, stories, and dolls. This research protocol also includes a self-report emotion assessment scale specially developed for this study to verify the types of emotion induced. Evaluation of the method entailed triangulation of the results from the subjects' self-reported emotional state corresponding to each conditioned stimulus as well as behavioral observations conducted by researchers. Findings suggest that this new protocol effectively evokes five emotions in correspondence to the way it was intended for appropriate emotion induction. Additionally, results showed that female children than male children are more likely to feel boredom; and school-aged children were more likely to react to sadness than pre-school children.
