A Research of Anomaly Detection Method in MS Office Document (MS 오피스 문서 파일 내 비정상 요소 탐지 기법 연구)

  • Microsoft Office is an office suite of applications developed by Microsoft. Recently users with malicious intent customize Office files as a container of the Malware because MS Office is most commonly used word processing program. To attack target system, many of malicious office files using a variety of skills and techniques like macro function, hiding shell code inside unused area, etc. And, people usually use two techniques to detect these kinds of malware. These are Signature-based detection and Sandbox. However, there is some limits to what it can afford because of the increasing complexity of malwares. Therefore, this paper propose methods to detect malicious MS office files in Computer forensics' way. We checked Macros and potential problem area with structural analysis of the MS Office file for this purpose.

An Email Vaccine Cloud System for Detecting Malcode-Bearing Documents (악성코드 은닉 문서파일 탐지를 위한 이메일 백신 클라우드 시스템)

  • Nowadays, email-based targeted attacks using malcode-bearing documents have been steadily increased. To improve the success rate of the attack and avoid anti-viruses, attackers mainly employ zero-day exploits and relevant social engineering techniques. In this paper, we propose an architecture of the email vaccine cloud system to prevent targeted attacks using malcode-bearing documents. The system extracts attached document files from email messages, performs behavior analysis as well as signature-based detection in the virtual machine environment, and completely removes malicious documents from the messages. In the process of behavior analysis, the documents are regarded as malicious ones in cases of creating executable files, launching new processes, accessing critical registry entries, connecting to the Internet. The email vaccine cloud system will help prevent various cyber terrors such as information leakages by preventing email based targeted attacks.

  • Alternate Data Streams (ADS) in NTFS originally has developed to provide compatibility with Macintosh Hierarchical File System. However, it is being used by the malware writers in order to support hiding malwares or data for the purpose of anti-forensics. Therefore identifying if hidden ADSs exist and extracting them became one of the most important component in computer forensics. This paper proposes a method to detect ADSs using MFT information. Experiment reveals that proposed method is better in performance and detection rate then others. This method supports not only identification of ADSs which are being used by the operating systems but also investigation of both live systems and evidence images. Therefore it is appropriate for using forensic purpose.

  • 악성코드의 지속적인 진화와 확대로 인해 악성코드 자체의 은닉 및 봇넷의 구성, C&C 서버의 구조뿐만 아니라 좀비 PC 를 이용한 DDoS 공격 방식에도 변화가 지속되고 있으며, 이에 대한 대등이 서비스 제공자에게 있어 가장 중요한 보호 이슈 중 하나로 대두되고 있다. 최근 이러한 DDoS 공격의 가장 일반적인 형태인 GET flooding 공격의 경우 리다이렉션 방법을 이용하여 회피하였지만, 최근들어 공격자가 일부 좀비 PC 를 이용하여 공격을 수행한 후 리다이렉션 페이지의 주소를 확보, C&C 서버를 통해 리다이렉션된 실제 응답페이지를 직접 공격하게 함으로써 이를 무력화 시키는 방법을 사용하고 있다. 본 논문은 호스트이름 변경, 페이지 주소 변경 등을 상황에 맞게 지속적으로 변경 적용하는 다이내믹 리다이렉션(Dynamic Redirection) 기법을 사용하여 효과적으로 리다이렉션 무력화 공격에 대응하는 방법을 제안한다.

Malicious Code Injection Vulnerability Analysis in the Deflate Algorithm (Deflate 압축 알고리즘에서 악성코드 주입 취약점 분석)

  • Through this study, we discovered that among three types of compressed data blocks generated through the Deflate algorithm, No-Payload Non-Compressed Block type (NPNCB) which has no literal data can be randomly generated and inserted between normal compressed blocks. In the header of the non-compressed block, there is a data area that exists only for byte alignment, and we called this area as DBA (Disposed Bit Area), where an attacker can hide various malicious codes and data. Finally we found the vulnerability that hides malicious codes or arbitrary data through inserting NPNCBs with infected DBA between normal compressed blocks according to a pre-designed attack scenario. Experiments show that even though contaminated NPNCB blocks were inserted between normal compressed blocks, commercial programs decoded normally contaminated zip file without any warning, and malicious code could be executed by the malicious decoder.

  • Fileless malware uses memory injection attacks to hide traces of payloads to perform malicious works. During the memory injection attack, an attack named "process hollowing" is a method of creating paused benign process like system processes. And then injecting a malicious payload into the benign process allows malicious behavior by pretending to be a normal process. In this paper, we propose a method to detect the memory injection regardless of whether or not the malicious action is actually performed when a process hollowing attack occurs. The replication process having same execution condition as the process of suspending the memory injection is executed, the data set belonging to each process virtual memory area is compared using the fuzzy hash, and the similarity is calculated.

  • 개인정보 및 네트워크 데이터 보호 등의 목적으로 암호화 통신이 보급됨에 따라 암호화 통신 바탕의 IoT기반 인프라 및 서비스가 급속히 구축, 확산되고 있다. 이러한 암호화 통신은 기존 네트워크 장비로는 내용 확인이 불가능하다는 점을 악용하여 악성코드를 은닉하고, 탐지기법을 우회하기 위한 수단으로 사용하는 사례가 꾸준히 발생하고 있다. 암호화 트래픽 분석 기술이란 암호화 통신에서 발생한 트래픽을 해독하지 않고 분석하는 기술로 암호화 통신을 악용한 사례에 대응하기 위한 수단으로써 그 필요성이 대두되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 암호화 통신과 암호화 트래픽에 대해 설명하고 암호화 트래픽 분석 기술의 연구 동향에 대해 분석한다.

  • Recently, convenience and usability are increasing with the development and deployment of various mobile applications on the Android platform. However, important information stored in the smartphone is leaked to the outside without knowing the user since the malicious mobile application is continuously increasing. A variety of mobile vaccines have been developed for the Android platform to detect malicious apps. Recently discovered server-based polymorphic(SSP) malicious mobile apps include obfuscation techniques. Therefore, it is not easy to detect existing mobile vaccines because some other form of malicious app is newly created by using SSP mechanism. In this paper, we analyze the correlation between the similarity of the method in the DEX file constituting the core malicious code and the permission similarity measure through APK de-compiling process for the SSP malicious app. According to the analysis results of DEX method similarity and permission similarity, we could extract the characteristics of SSP malicious apps and found the difference that can be distinguished from the normal app.

  • As the memory capacity of smartphone increases, the type and amount of privacy stored in the smartphone is also increasing. but recently there is an increasing possibility that various personal information such as photos and videos of smartphones may be leaked due to malicious apps by malicious attackers or other people such as repair technicians. This paper analyzed and studied the security and vulnerability of these vault apps by analyzing the cryptography algorithm and data protection function. We analyzed 5.3.7(June 13, 2022) and 3.3.2(December 30, 2020) versions of AppLock, the most downloaded information-hidding apps registered with Google Play, and found various vulnerabilities. In the case of access control, there was a vulnerability in that values for encrypting patterns entered by users were hardcoded into plain text in the source code, and encrypted pattern values were stored in xml files. In addition, in the case of the vault function, there was a vulnerability in that the files and log files for storing in the vault were not encrypted.

  • Recently, Phising attack uses trick of URL and sites, and technical concealment method which infiltrates sophisticated malicious code. However, sometimes Phising security technology cannot cover all of Phising methods. Consequently, this research proposes inspection to solve this problem. First, we can install Proxy server for a strong open information exchange of web environment between web servers and clients. Therefore, it compares and analyzes harmful site and Phising URL with White domain list, and filters them. Finally, designs for stable web based information so that we can block Phising with least regulation and active control. So the purpose of this paper is introducing this design system and structure, and inspect them.
