With the increase in adoption of tilting pad journal bearings (TPJBs), various failure mechanisms related to TPJBs have been reported, of which pad wear is a frequently reported one. Pad wear causes change in geometry of the bearing, which can sometimes result in the failure of the entire system. The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of pad wear on the pad temperature, which is one of the widely used condition monitoring methods for TPJBs. For the theoretical investigation, thermohydrodynamic (THD) analysis was conducted by solving the generalized Reynolds equation and the 3D energy equation. The results of the analysis show that the temperature of the loaded pad increases while that of the unloaded pad decreases, when there is wear on the loaded pads. In addition, the minimum film thickness decreases with an increase in the wear depth. A validation test was conducted with a test rig, which mimics the axial turbine when a test rotor is supported by two TPJBs. The test bearing consists of five pads with a diameter of 60 mm, and a resistance temperature detector (RTD) is installed in the pad for temperature monitoring. The test was performed by replacing the two loaded pads with the worn pad. The test result for the TPJB with wear depth of $30{\mu}m$ show that the temperatures of the loaded pads are $8^{\circ}C$ higher and that of the unloaded pad is $2.5^{\circ}C$ lower than that of the normal TPJB. In addition, the predicted pad temperature shows good agreement with the measured pad temperatures.
This paper presents a wear analysis procedure for calculating the wear of journal bearings of a four-strokes and four-cylinder engine operating at a constant angular crank shaft speed during firing conditions. To decide whether the lubrication state of a journal bearing is in the possible region of wear scar, we utilize the concept of the centerline average surface roughness to define the most oil film thickness scarring wear (MOFTSW) on two rough surfaces. The wear volume is calculated from the wear depth and wear angle, determined by the magnitude of each film thickness on a set of oil films with thicknesses lower than the MOFTSW at every crank angle. To calculate the wear volume at one contact, the wear range ratio during one cycle is used. The total wear volume is then determined by accumulating the wear volume at every contact. The fractional film defect coefficient, asperity load sharing factor, and modified specific wear rate for the application of the mixed-elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication regime are used. The results of this study show that wear occurs only at the connecting-rod big-end bearing. Thus, simulation results of only the big-end bearing are illustrated and analyzed. It is shown that the wear volume of each wear scar group occurs consecutively as the crank angle changes, resulting in the total accumulated wear volume.
A multi-stage compressor (MSC) is comprised of several impellers installed in the pinion gear shaft driven by a main bull gear. In the pinion shaft, a thrust collar (TC) is installed to support the thrust load. The TC makes the lubrication system simpler in the MSC; therefore, it is widely used in similar kinds of machinery. Typically, TCs are installed on both sides of the bull gear and pressure is developed in the lubricated area by creating a taper angle on the TC and bull gear surface. In the current study, we developed a numerical analysis model to evaluate the performance of the TC considering its design parameters. We sloved the Reynolds equation using the finite element method and applied the half Sommerfeld condition to consider cavitation. Based on the pressure calculated in the lubricated area, we calculated the power loss and minimum film thickness. In addition, we calculated stiffness and damping using perturbation method. We performed parametric studies using the developed model. The results of the analysis show that the maximum pressure presents in the center area of the TC and it increases with the taper angle. The area over which pressure is developed decreases with the taper angle. The results also show that there is an optimum taper angle providing minimum power loss and maximum film thickness. Additionally, the stiffness and damping decrease with the taper angle. As the applied load increases, the power loss increases and the minimum film thickness decreases. However, the stiffness and damping increase with the applied load.
In spite of its potential importance in the assessment of geosynthetic-related dynamic problems, no serious attempt has yet been made to investigate a probable dependence of dynamic friction resistance of the geosynthetic interface on shear displacement rate. Hence, an experimental study of geosynthetics was carried out on a shaking table, and the relationship between dynamic friction resistance and shear displacement rate of geosynthetic interfaces was investigated. A cyclic, displacement rate-controlled experimental setup was used. The subsequent multiple rate tests showed that interfaces that involve geotextiles have such unique shearing characteristics that shear strengths tend to increase with displacement rate. In contrast, once submerged with water, the shear strength appears to be no longer dependent on the displacement rate, partly due to lubrication effect of water trapped inside the interface. The results of the experimental study can be used in the seismic safety assessment of a landfill cover and slope where the geosynthetic materials are exposed to a relatively low normal stress.
In this paper, we present the results of the wear analysis of journal bearings on a stripped-down single-cylinder engine during start-up and coast-down by motoring. We calculate journal bearing wear by using a modified specific wear rate considering the fractional film defect coefficient and load-sharing ratio for the asperity portion of a mixed elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regime coupled with previously presented graphical data of experimental lifetime linear wear in radial journal bearings. Based on the calculated wear depth, we obtain a new oil film thickness for every crank angle. By examination of the oil film thickness, we determine whether the oil film thickness at the wear scar region is in a mixed lubrication regime by comparing dimensionless oil film thickness, h/σ, to 3.0 at every crank angle. We present the lift-off speed and the crank angles involved with the wear calculation for bearings #1 and #2. The dimensionless oil film thickness, h/σ, illustrates whether the lubrication region between the two surfaces is still within the bounds of the mixed lubrication regime after scarring of the surface by wear. In addition, we present in tables the asperity contact pressure, the real minimum film thickness at the wear scar region, the modified specific wear rate, and the wear angle, α, for bearings #1 & #2. To show the real shape of the oil film at wear scar region, we depict the actual oil film thickness in graphs. We also tabulated the ranges of bearing angles related with wear scar. We present the wear volume for bearings #1 and #2 after one turn-on and turn-off of the engine ignition switch for five kinds of equivalent surface roughness. We show that the accumulated wear volume after a single turn-on and turn-off of an ignition switch normally increases with increasing surface roughness, with a few exceptions.
This paper presents a wear analysis procedure for the journal bearings on a stripped-down single-cylinder engine during start-up and coast-down by motoring. A journal bearing is in the mixed elastohydrodynamic (EHL) lubrication region when the shaft speed is less than the corresponding lift-off speed. Below the lift-off speed, a wear scar can form on bearing surfaces. In part 1 of this paper, we develop the appropriate formulations and the calculation procedure for the analysis. Specifically, we formulate an equation for modified film thickness in a journal bearing considering the additional wear volume. In order to obtain the modified specific wear rate induced by the modified Archard’s wear coefficient, we utilized the extended non-dimensional diagram for the specific wear rate, k, the fractional film defect coefficient, Ψ and the asperity load sharing factor, γ2. This asperity load sharing factor is newly calculated by setting the Zhao-Maietta-Chang (ZMC) asperity contact pressure equation coupled with the central film thickness equation derived by using the ZMC asperity contact model equal to the modified central contact pressure derived by using the central (or maximum) contact pressure at the dry rough line-contact configuration. We can use the procedure introduced in this paper to determine the lifetime (or longterm) linear wear in radial journal bearings that is a result of repeated stop-start cycles.
This paper presents the thermohydrodynamic analysis of tilting journal pad bearings supporting a power turbine rotor applied to a 250 kW super-critical $CO_2$ cycle. In the analysis, the generalized Reynolds equation and 3D energy equation are solved to predict oil film temperature and the 3D heat conduction equation is solved for pad temperature. The power turbine rotor is supported by two tilting pad bearings consisting of five pads with an oil supply block between the pads. Copper backing pads with higher thermal conductivity compared to steel backing pads are adopted to improve thermal management. The predicted maximum pad temperature is around $55^{\circ}C$ which is approximately $15^{\circ}C$ higher than oil supply temperature. In addition, the predicted minimum film thickness is 50 mm at a rotating speed of 5,000 rpm. These results indicate that there is no issue in the thermal behavior of the bearing. An operation test is performed with a power turbine module consisting of a power turbine, a reduction gear and a generator. Thermocouples are installed at the 75% position from the leading edge of the pad to monitor pad temperature. The power turbine uses compressed air at a temperature of $250^{\circ}C$ in its operation. The steady state pad temperatures measured in the test show good agreement with the predicted temperatures.
Environmentally adapted synthetic base oils of polyalkylene glycols (PAGs) and polyol esters (POEs) show a high polarity because of their functional groups containing oxygen atom. The lubricating performance of these polar base oils was investigated by using a four-ball tribometer under boundary lubrication condition. Four polyalkylene glycols and five polyol ester base oils were used as sample base oils of high polarity. A mineral oil (MO) and alkylnaphthalene (AN) were used as low polarity base oils. Tricrecylphosphate (TCP) was added to all the base oils, in the range of 10 mmol/L-2000 mmol/L, as an antiwear additive. All the TCP-for-mutated base oils showed optimum concentration characteristics for minimizing wear. The order of optimum concentration of all the base oils was in a good accordance with the order of relative stability of TCP in base oils. The interaction model on solvation between additive and different polar base oils can expect the stability order of TCP. Thus, the model on solvation can explain well the order of optimum concentration of all the base oils, by using the effect of polarity (dielectric constant, $\varepsilon$) and molecular size (molecular weight, MW) of them on stability of TCP in polar base oils. Finally, a good correlation of the optimum concentration for all the base oils was obtained when it was arranged as a function of C∝(M $W_{Base Oil}$/M $W_{TCP}$)$^{-2}$.71/.($\varepsilon$$_{Base Oil}$)$^{3.38}$ by these two parameters.s..

The degradation characteristics of perfluoropolyether (PFPE) derivatives currently being used as computer hard disk lubricants have been investigated. Especially, we considered the effects of end group on degradation behavior of PFPE derivatives. It was found that the degradation of PFPE derivatives in the presence of $Al_2O_3$ involves two degradation mechanisms such as thermal degradation and Lewis acid disproportionation by $AlF_3$ which was mainly formed by oxide-to-halide reaction between $Al_2O_3$ and the degraded PFPE. The end groups were strongly related to Lewis acid disproportionation of PFPE derivatives, and it is due to the difference of electron donating ability in the each end groups. Even if PFPE derivatives have same repeating unit in the main chain, Lewis acid disproportionation was prohibited by higher electron donating ability by the end group which caused the high electron density at the acetal group in the repeating unit.
