  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is a major technology that develops smart ships into autonomous ships in the marine industry. Autonomous ships recognize a situation with the information collected without human judgment which allow them to operate on their own. Existing ship systems, like control systems on land, are not designed for security against cyberattacks. As a result, there are infringements on numerous data collected inside and outside the ship and potential cyber threats to AI technology to be applied to the ship. For the safety of autonomous ships, it is necessary to focus not only on the cybersecurity of the ship system, but also on the cybersecurity of AI technology. In this paper, we analyzed potential cyber threats that could arise in AI technologies to be applied to existing ship systems and autonomous ships, and derived categories that require security risks and the security of autonomous ships. Based on the derived results, it presents future directions for cybersecurity research on autonomous ships and contributes to improving cybersecurity.

  • This paper describes the construction and experimetal results of prototype digital telesounder developed to monitor remotely the fish school entered in setnet. The telesounder consists of the sea station and land station. The former consists of an ultrasonic transceiving part of 50 KHz, a hand made 16 bits single board computer (SBC), and a RF MODEM of 9600 bps for data link. The SBC controls the trigger signal to transmit the ultrasonic pulse, maximum detection range, sampling rate in analog to digital converter and data link. The sampling rate of echo data was 80 ${\mu}$s. The later consists of a RF MODEM same as the former one and 486 notebook computer which displays the echogram and saves its raw data. The authors carried out some experiments to confirm the practical use of the telesounder. At results the echogram obtained on the land station is sufficiently good and clear to monitor the behavior of fish school in setnet.

  • In this study, the IoT sensor technology required for improving the survival rate and high-density productivity of individual shrimp in smart shrimp farming (which involves the usage of recirculating aquaculture systems and biofloc technology) was analyzed. The principles and performances of domestic and overseas water quality monitoring IoT sensors were compared. Furthermore, the drawbacks of existing aquaculture monitoring technologies and the countermeasures for future aquaculture monitoring technologies were examined. In particular, for farming white-legged shrimp, an IoT sensor was employed to collect measurement indicators for managing the water quality environment in real-time, and the IoT sensor-based real-time monitoring technology was then analyzed for implementing the optimal farming environment. The results obtained from this study can potentially contribute to the realization of an autonomous farming platform that can improve the survival rate and productivity of shrimp, achieve feed reduction, improve the water quality environment, and save energy.

  • A mound was constructed to install a caisson and sofa blocks underwater. The mound riprap, which were of uniform grade, size, shape, and specific gravity, formed the foundation for the support superstructure. Also, rubble leveling works were performed before installing structures such as caissons. In this study, underwater construction equipment was developed with a remotely controlled operating system and underwater environment monitoring system for unmanned underwater rubble leveling work. The performance of the developed equipment was verified using on-land and underwater tests. In addition to the performance verification, the construction process and economic efficiency of the equipment should be checked before applying it to the real construction field for commercial purposes. In this paper, a construction process using the developed equipment was proposed and compared with the existing rubble leveling method. The results demonstrated that the new construction method has higher economic efficiency and safety than the existing construction method.

  • The need for an environmental monitoring system that obtains and provides environmental information in real time is increasing. In particular, in the case of water quality management in public waters, regular management must be conducted through manual and automatic measurement by law, and air pollution also requires regular measurement and management to reduce fine dust and exhaust gas in connection with the realization of carbon neutrality. In this study, we implemented a system that can measure and monitor water pollution and air pollution information in real time. A hovercraft capable of moving on land and water simultaneously was used as a measurement tool. Water quality measurement and air pollution measurement sensors were installed on the hovercraft body, and a communication module was installed to transmit the information to the monitoring system in real time. The structure of a hovercraft for environmental measurement was designed, and a LoRa module capable of low-power, long-distance communication was applied as a real-time information transmission communication module. The operational performance of the proposed system was confirmed through actual hardware implementation.

  • In the near future, autonomous ships, ships controlled by shore remote control centers, and ships operated by navigators will coexist and operate the sea together. In the advent of this situation, a method is required to evaluate the safety of the maritime traffic environment. Therefore, in this study, a plan to evaluate the safety of navigation through ship control simulation was proposed in a maritime environment, where ships directly controlled by navigators and autonomous ships coexisted, using autonomous operation technology. Own ship was designed to have autonomous operational functions by learning the MMG model based on the six-DOF motion with the PPO algorithm, an in-depth reinforcement learning technique. The target ship constructed maritime traffic modeling data based on the maritime traffic data of the sea area to be evaluated and designed autonomous operational functions to be implemented in a simulation space. A numerical model was established by collecting date on tide, wave, current, and wind from the maritime meteorological database. A maritime meteorology model was created based on this and designed to reproduce maritime meteorology on the simulator. Finally, the safety evaluation proposed a system that enabled the risk of collision through vessel traffic flow simulation in ship control simulation while maintaining the existing evaluation method.

  • In the midst of continuing international recession, the rate of maritime traffic and marine leisure markets are consistently growing. The Republic of Korea controls the marine traffic volume through vessel traffic centers and various other management facilities. Nevertheless, the continuous growth and complexity of marine traffic is resulting in repeated occurrences of marine accidents. Recovery is very difficult in cases of human injuries or deaths caused by marine accidents due to its nature, and the scale of marine accidents is also becoming greater with advanced ship building technologies. Passenger ships, oil tankers, and other such vessels used for specific purposes requires a more detailed navigational status surveillance and analysis, and numerous research has been conducted with an objective for monitoring such special purpose vessels. However, the data elements transmitted from the ocean to the shore station are limited to AIS and ARPA. We are implementing IoT ship sensor collection and a syncing system capable of transmitting various ship sensing data to the shore station, and also proposing a Safe Navigation Status Analysis System utilizing the collected data.

  • There are many efforts to mechanize the process for underwater port construction due to the severe and adverse working environment. This paper presents an underwater construction robot to level rubbles on the seabed for port construction. The robot is composed of a blade and a multi-functional arm to flatten the rubble mound with respect to the reference level at uneven terrain and to dig and dump the rubbles. This research analyzes the kinematics of the blade and the multi-functional arm including track and swing motions with respect to a world coordinate assigned to a reference depth sensor. This analysis is conducted interfacing with the position and orientation sensors installed at the robot. A hydraulic control system is developed to control a track, a blade and a multi-functional arm for rubble leveling work. The experimental results of rubble leveling work conducted by the robot are presented in land and subsea. The working speed of the robot is eight times faster than that of a human diver, and the working quality is acceptable. The robot is expected to have much higher efficiency in deep water where a human diver is unable to work.

  • Lately, Internet-based vessels have begun to appear at sea with the development of ICT. Thereby crews have gained easy Internet access through increased smartphone portability. However, the side effects of smartphone use while on watch, have not been studied seriously despite being a reality. In this study, simulation experiments were carried out using a Ship Handling Simulator in order to distinguish the risks of using a smartphone while on watch. Proximity Evaluation, Control Evaluation, Subjective Evaluation and Situation Awareness to the dangerous situation were used to quantify risk during simulation, and analysis results were compared with cases when using and not using a smartphone. It was found that the degree of risk increased between 1.3 to 3 times given smartphone use. Consequently, this paper represents foundation for the restriction of smartphone use and proposes smartphone usage guideline for ship navigation.
