  • Pot experiments were conducted to evaluate the phosphorus (P) availability with cropping in soils where P were highly accumulated. Bray 1-P contents of the used three soils were 584, 695 and $1043P\;mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. Corn ${\rightarrow}$ Chinese cabbage ${\rightarrow}$ Chinese cabbage ${\rightarrow}$ corn were sequentially grown from 1996 to 1998. P fertilizer was applied at three levels of 0 (P0), recommended application rate (P1), and double of recommended application rate (P2). At the end of each crop growth, available P content was determined by methods of Bray 1-P, Olsen-P and Lancaster-P. The growth of crops were not significantly affected by the rates of P applications. The relative yields of PO treatment were more than 88% of P1 treatment. The recoveries of added phosphorus were relatively low due to the high content of available phosphorus in soils. Although available phosphorus contents decreased through cropping, the concentration of soil available phosphorus was maintained high level even after the final cropping. In the case of P0 treatment in the three soils, the residual concentration was in the range of $410{\sim}610mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Bray 1-P, $284{\sim}410mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Olsen-P and $368{\sim}524mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Lancaster-P. The amount of soil available phosphorus decreased during the experiments was linearly regressed with high significance to the amount of P taken up by crops. The regressions of soil 1 as follow, Bray 1-P : y=149.7x=102.7, Lancaster-P : y=209.2x-140.2, Olsen-P: y=60.8x=19.9. The decrease rate of available phosphorus in the P0 treatment with cropping was described by an equation of first-order chemical reaction. The equation of soil1 was as follow: Bray 1-P: In(C)= -0.12N + 6.96 r=-0.991, Lancaster-P: In(C)= -0.14N = 6.88 r= -0.938, Olsen-P: In(C)= -0.07N = 6.37 r= -0.959. The rate constants seemed to be affected by ply, sand and silt content, and exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$ concentration. The times of cropping needed to reduce the content of available P to half of the initial or to the index level could be predicted by using that equation.

  • Root system and distribution of soil components (pH, available P, K, Ca and Mg) were studied in a 20-year old, low-cutting mulberry field. The variety, kairyonezumigaeshi (Morus alba L.), was planted in a spacing of 1.8m${\times}$0.6m(740 tiess/10a). Roots and soil samples were taken from each of 196 blocks in a demension of 26${\times}$17${\times}$10cm(as shown in Fig. 1) from the soil between rows. 1. Whereas root system concentrated towards the stock, chemical components, pH, available P, Ca and Mg, were increasing toward the center of the row spacing. 2. Root system and distribution of chemical components between trees were not significantly different among blocks. 3. Roots were distributed most densely in a depth of 10∼20, intermediate 20∼30 and 30∼40, and least 0∼10cm. However, the concentrbtion of chemical components was the highest in a depth of 0∼10cm and decreased with soil depth. The soil. a depth of 0∼10cm on the center of row spacing, was the lowest in the root system and the richest in a chemical components. The results indicate that special fertilizinng management is required for the efficient absorption of nutrients.

  • This study was conducted to how the effect of lime and humic acid on cadmium availability and ie uptake by plant grown in contaminated paddy soils with heavy metal. The treatment levels of lime were 2.5 and 5.0 ton/ha and that of humic acid were 1 and 2%. The contents of 0.1N HCl extractable Cd were reduced with lime and humic acid and were negatively correlated with CEC as well as soil pH. The sequential extraction procedure was used to fractionate the heavy metals in soils into the designated from exchangeable (0.5 M $KNO_3$) water soluble ($H_2O$), organically bound (0.5 M NaOH), carbonate (0.05 M $Na_{2-}$ EDTA) and sulfide/residual (4 M $HNO_3$). In soil amended with 2.5 ton/ha lime and 1% humic acia che- mical forms of Cd at tillering stage were predominant exchangeable + water soluble extractable Cd, whereas that at harvesting stage were predominant carbonate + sulfide/residual extractable Cd. The exchangeable forms of Cd in soil with lime and humic acid were negatively correlated with soil pH during the harvesting period. Total absorbed Cd of paddy rice tended to occur in the order of root > stem > leaf > brown rice. Cd contents of brown rice with lime and humic acid treatment were 0.09 and 0.08 mg/kg, respectively. That were lower than control, 0.20 mg/kg. It could be that treatment of lime and humic acid in polluted soil by heavy metals would reduce the uptake of heavy metals by piano and be a temporary method of reclamation at the highly heavy Metal contaminated soils.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect on the increase of In vitro skin permeation experiments and In-vivo skin whitening efficacy using a O/W nanoemulsion produced via PIC(Phase Inversion Composition) with 1,3-di(pentyloxyl)benzene. skin permeation experiments of RS-nanoemulsion formulated with selected condition was evaluated compared to mineral oil containing 1,3-di(pentyloxyl)benzene and normal O/W type RS-emulsion. Compared to mineral oil with 1,3-di(pentyloxyl)benzene and RS-emulsion. RS-Nanoemulsion has a statistically significant high percutaneous absorption in terms of index substance, which is 1,3-di(pentyloxyl)benzene. In vivo test were prepared in the system of O/W cream containing RS-nanoemulsion. There was no adverse reactions in both samples. After 8 weeks, the subjects was evaluated by a dermatologist's scoring and Chromameter. In conclusion, the testing product showed statistically improvement (p<0.05) compared to the controlled product and proved its whitening efficacy.

  • Field experiments were conducted to avail the accumulated phosphorus by silica 200kg/10a and compost 2,000kg/10a instead of phosphate fertilization in 1988 to 1989. Cultivated varieties were Dongjinbyeo in paddy soils of Av. $P_2O_5$ 233ppm, and Baegunkong in upland soils of Av. $P_2O_5$ 530ppm. The results were as follows. 1. Available phosphorus in the soil was increased about 60ppm in silica and compost application compared with control. Its increment rate by silica and compost application was higher in paddy soils than in upland soils. 2. Absorbed phosphorus by plant was increased in silica and compost application compared with control, whose difference was higher in soybean plant than in rice plant. 3. Amount of absorbed phosphorus in plant was negative in relation to soil DTPA-Fe, but was positive in relation to soil reduction and root nodule of soybean. 4. Persistence rate of phosphorus was about 80 percent in compost application and 100 percent in phosphate fertilization compared with control, and it was apt to decrease by silica. 5. The yield of rice was no difference between with and without phosphate fertilization, but the yield of soybean was increased 5 percent in none application compared with phosphate fertilization.

  • The changes of available silicate (Avail. $SiO_2$) contents in paddy soils (sandy loam) were assessed from data of the 41 years fertilization plots in which the continuous rice cropping experiment started in 1954 at the National Academy of Agricultural Science. The treatments were no fertilization (O), inorganic fertilization (NPK), inorganic fertilizer plus rice straw compost (NPK+C), inorganic fertilizer plus silicate fertilizer as a soil amendment (NPK+S), inorganic fertilizer plus rice straw compost and silicate fertilizer (NPK+CS) and inorganic fertilizer plus rice straw compost, silicate fertilizer and lime (NPK+CSL). Available silicate contents in NPK+S, NPK+CS and NPK in surface soil reached at the highest content ($255{\sim}330mg\;kg^{-1}$) after 41 years and then levelled off. Available silicate contents in subsurface soil (25~30 cm) were higher in NPK+C and NPK+S treatments than those in other treatments. Continuous application of silicate fertilizer affected significantly on the levels of available silicate in surface and subsurface soils. Silicate uptake of top rice was more increased by 98% in NPK+CS and NPK+CSL over NPK. Grain yield also increased by 37~47% in NPK+CS and NPK+CSL as compared to NPK. The combined applications of inorganic fertilizers with silicate as a soil amendment are recommended as the best fertilization practice for fertilizer use efficiency, enhancement of soil fertility status in the continuous rice cropping system in Korea.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of long-term continuous application of fertilizers for rice cultivation. Changes of physical and chemical properties of paddy soil and the rice yield by continuous application of NPK fertilizers, ammonium sulphate, and urea over fifty years, from 1954 to 2003, were investigated. The rice yield index of each treatment were 100 of NPK plots, 84 of ammonium sulphate plots, 81 of urea plots, and 62 of no fertilizer plots. The variance of yield was large according to the quality of irrigation water. Nutrient uptakes by rice plants in ammonium sulphate and urea plots were significantly smaller than those in NPK plots; 86 and 75% in T-N, 79 and 82% in $P_2O_5$, 64 and 58% in $K_2O$, and 94 and 90% in $SiO_2$, respectively. Bulk density of soil in NPK plots significantly decreased compared to those in no fertilizer, ammonium sulphate, and urea plots, whereas CEC in NPK plots increased compared to other plots. Soil pHs of all plots were higher than that before experiment which was 5.2; 6.0 in no fertilizer, 5.9 in urea and NPK, and 5.4 in ammonium sulphate plots. The available phosphate in soil increased by $2.5mg\;kg^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ when $70kg\;ha^{-1}$ of P fertilizer applied for rice cultivation, and decreased by $1.8mg\;kg^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ when no P fertilizer applied.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes of soil properties for potato and Chinese cabbage after application adding phosphorus and potassium fertilizers in the mounded highland soil from 1999 to 2001. Experimental plots were designed with control(NPK+Lime+Compost) and chemical improvement(Control+Application adding P and K). Mounded soil before field experiment of first year(1999) was low in organic matter, available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium, and the soil texture was loamy sand soil. After 3 years, the contents of soil organic matter increased a little, and available phosphorus and exchangeable potassium contents were remarkably increased. The crop growth in chemical improvement plot was better than control plot. Yield of chemical improvement plot in comparison with control plot was increased by 5~22% for potato and 6~25% for Chinese cabbage after 2~3 years.

  • In order to examine the possible use of rock phosphate as P source, tomato seedlings with or without inoculation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi were grown in the pots of sterile volcanic ash soil from Cheju island with two levels of phosphorus (100 and 200 mg/kg) supplied either as fused or as rock phosphate. After three months of culture, plant dry weight, P and other nutrient uptake, root colonization and spore density in the soil were determined. Treatments of rock phosphate of both levels resulted in the significantly depressed plant growth in comparison to the treatments of fused phosphate, likely due to lower P availability in soil with rock phosphate. Mycorrhizal fungi inoculation increased the dry weight of plant at 200 mg/kg level of both fused and rock phosphate. Root infection and sporoulation were reduced in rock phosphate treatments. Nitrogen, K, Ca and Mg contents in plants were not significantly different at all treatments. As a P source, rock phosphate in combination with mycorrhizae was not satisfactory for optimum plant growth at $100{\sim}200\;mg/kg$ levels in Cheju volcanic ash soil.
