This paper proposes the real-time hybrid shaking table testing methods to simulate the dynamic behavior of a soil-structure interaction system with dynamic soil stiffness by using only a structure model as the physical specimen and verifies their effectiveness for experimental implementation. Experimental methodologies proposed in this paper adopt such a way that absolute accelerations measured from the superstructure and shaking table are feedback to the shaking table controller, and then the shaking table is driven by the calculated motion of the absolute acceleration (acceleration feedback method) or the absolute velocity (velocity feedback method) of foundation that is required to simulate the dynamic behavior of a whole soil-structure interaction system. The shaking table test is implemented by reflecting the dynamic soil stiffness, which are differently approximated from the theoretical one depending on the feedback methods, on the shaking table controller to calculate soil part. The effectiveness of the proposed experimental methods is verified by comparing the response measured from the test on a foundation-fixed structural model and that obtained from the experiment of a soil-interaction system under the consideration in this paper and by matching the dynamic soil stiffness reflected on the shaking table controller with that identified using the experimentally measured data.
The Gangneung region has an environment suitable for the formation of organic soil, and there is an alluvial layer in which sedimentary sand layers are distributed on the upper and lower parts of the organic soil. In order to evaluate the seismic safety of the railway roadbed passing through the Gangneung area, a railway roadbed and ground model considering the similarity ratio was fabricated, a shaking table test was conducted, and the seismic stability was evaluated by comparing the effective stress analysis results. The applied seismic waves were artificial seismic waves, Gyeongju seismic waves, Borah seismic waves, Nahanni seismic waves, and Tabas seismic waves. It became. Due to the ground reinforcement effect by jet grouting applied to the lower ground of the new roadbed, the displacement of the new roadbed was found to be reduced from a minimum of 33.7% to a maximum of 56.7% compared to the existing roadbed. The shaking table test results were verified by effective stress analysis using the Finn model of the Flac program, and showed a similar trend to the shaking table test values.

In this paper, seismic ground motion generation method based on the observbation data from the Korea Meteorological Administration is proposed to predict the acceleration time history at an arbitrary location after earthquake. The proposed method assumes that the magnitude of the seismic accelrations obtained from the near stations decreases linearly with the distance from the epicenter to the corresponding station and the accelerations measured at the adjacent stations are assumed to have similar maximum acceleration and time shape functions. These two assumptions allow for the prediction of seismic acceleartion motion without geotechnical information where no seismic accelerometer is installed. This study verified the applicability of the prediction method using seismic observation data from Gyeongju Earthquake (2016), Pohang Earthquake (2017) and Sangju Earthuqkae (2019). The comparison results show that the proposed method is effective for predicting the seismic acceleration response spectrum and time history at arbitary locations.
A numerical procedure is presented fur evaluating seismic liquefaction on sloping ground sites. The procedure uses a fully coupled dynamic effective stress analysis with a plastic constitutive model called UBCSAND. The model was first calibrated against laboratory element behavior. This involved cyclic simple shear tests performed on loose sand with and without initial static shear stress. The numerical procedure is then verified by predicting a centrifuge test with a slope performed on loose Fraser River sand. The predicted excess pore pressures, accelerations and displacements are compared with the measurements. The results are shown to be in good agreement. The shear stress reversal patterns depend on static and cyclic shear stress levels and are shown to play a key role in evaluating liquefaction response in sloping ground sites. The sand near the slope has low effective confining stress and dilates more. When no stress reversals occur, the sand behaves in a stiffer manner that curtails the accumulated downslope displacements. The numerical procedure using UBCSAND can serve as a guide for design of new soil structures or retrofit of existing ones.

The George Massey immersed tunnel passes the Fraser River near Vancouver, Western Canada. The tunnel was founded on sandy soils and its behavior during earthquake was analyzed by an effective stress constitutive model called UBCSAND. This model is able to calculate pore pressure rise and resulting tunnel movements due to cyclic loading. Centrifuge tests conducted at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) were used to verify the model performance. The centrifuge tests consisted of 2 models: Model 1 was designed for an original ground condition, Model 2 for a ground improvement by densification. In Model 1, large deformation of the tunnel was observed due to liquefaction of surrounding soil. Because of the densified zones around the tunnel the vertical and horizontal displacements of the tunnel in Model 2 was 50% less than Model 1. Measured excess pore pressures, accelerations, and displacements from centrifuge tests were in close agreement with the predictions of UBCSAND model. Therefore, the model can be used to predict seismic behavior of immersed tunnels on sandy soils and optimize liquefaction remediation methods.

The generation of artificial accelerograms considering the characteristic of earthquakes in the Korean peninsula for a time history analysis of structures is accomplised by the stochastic method. The engineering data such as a representative shape of envelope function and an effective duration are investigated from the instrumental records. The maximum ground acceleration value is based on seismic zoning map which are constructed for the Korean peninsula. The acceleration-time histories are generated for two different types of earthquake motions and two types of soil conditions. In the study, the maximum ground acceleration value of 0.2 g and effective durations of 24 seconds are used. The validity of the artificial accelerograms is obtained by the comparison with the required envelope functions and the design response spectrum.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanism about damages occurring at quay wall and backfill in Youngilman Port during Pohang earthquake (M5.4) on November 15, 2017. In the field investigation, the horizontal displacement of the caisson occurred between 5 cm and 15 cm, and the settlement at backfill occurred higher than 10 cm. 2D-effective Stress Analysis was performed to clarify the mechanism for the damage. The input earthquake motion used acceleration ($3.25m/s^2$) measured at bedrock of Pohang habor. Based on a numerical analysis, it was found that the effective stress decreased due to the increase of excess pore pressure in the backfill ground and the horizontal displacement of the caisson occurred by about 14 cm, and the settlement occurred by about 3 cm. In backfill, the settlements occurred between 6 cm and 9 cm. This is similar to field investigation results. Also, it was found that the backfill soil was close to the Mohr-Coulomb failure line due to the cyclic loading from the effective stress path and the stress-strain behavior. It may be related to decreasing of bearing capacity induced by the reduction of effective stress caused by the increase of the excess pore water pressure.
In this study, verification of the nonlinear effective stress analysis is performed for introducing performance based earthquake resistance design of port and harbor structures. Seismic response of gravitational caisson quay wall in numerical analysis is compared directly with dynamic centrifuge test results in prototype scale. Inside of the rigid box, model of the gravitational quay wall is placed above the saturated sand layer which can show the increase of excess pore water pressure. The model represents caisson quay wall with a height of 10 m, width of 6 m under centrifugal acceleration of 60 g. The numerical model is made in the same dimension with the prototype scale of the test in two dimensional plane strain condition. Byrne's liquefaction model is adopted together with a nonlinear constitutive model. Interface element is used for sliding and tensional separation between quay wall and the adjacent soils. Verification results show good agreement for permanent displacement of the quay wall, horizontal acceleration at quay wall and soil layer, and excess pore water pressure increment beneath the quay wall foundation.

Seabed beneath and near coastal structures may undergo large excess pore water pressure composed of oscillatory and residual components in the case of long durations of high wave loading. This excess pore water pressure may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually increase the failure potential. In this study, to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed, numerical analysis was conducted using the expanded 2-dimensional numerical wave tank to account for an irregular wave field. In the condition of an irregular wave field, the dynamic wave pressure and water flow velocity acting on the seabed and the surface boundary of the composite breakwater structure were estimated. Simulation results were used as input data in a finite element computer program for elastoplastic seabed response. Simulations evaluated the time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure, effective stress, and liquefaction potential in the seabed. Additionally, the deformation of the seabed and the displacement of the structure as a function of time were quantitatively evaluated. From the results of the analysis, the liquefaction potential at the seabed in front and rear of the composite breakwater was identified. Since the liquefied seabed particles have no resistance to force, scour potential could increase on the seabed. In addition, the strength decrease of the seabed due to the liquefaction can increase the structural motion and significantly influence the stability of the composite breakwater. Due to limitations of allowable paper length, the studied results were divided into two portions; (I) focusing on the dynamic response of structure, acceleration, deformation of seabed, and (II) focusing on the time variation in excess pore water pressure, liquefaction, effective stress path in the seabed. This paper corresponds to (II).
