To study the effect of incorporation of a surface crosslinking layer on a crosslinked poly (sodium acrylate) (cPSA) absorbent with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate CEGDMA), we synthesized several surface crosslinked cPSAs with EGDMA by an inverse emulsion polymerization method to delay the absorption of excess water in concrete, Liquid paraffin was used as a continuous phase. cPSA was synthesized with acrylic acid (AA) neutralized with aqueous 8 M sodium hydroxide solution as a monomer, N,N-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as crosslinking agent and ammonium persulfate (APS) and sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) as a redox initiator system by inverse emulsion polymerization. FTIR spectroscopy was used to characterize $Ca^{2+}$ ion interaction with cPSA and cPSA-EGDMAs. The swelling ratios of synthesized absorbents were evaluated from the absorption in deionized water, cement saturated aqueous solution and aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (pH 12). Equilibrium swelling times for cPSA and surface crosslinked cPSA with EGDMA were 2 and 3 hrs, respectively. We also observed an increase in setting time of the cement and an increase in the compressive strength of mortar by addition of the synthesized cPSA-EGDMA.
Polystyrene (PS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared via latex technology and the effect of nanotube length on rheological properties were investigated. Monodisperse PS particle was synthesized by the emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization and two types of MWCNTs were used after surface modification to improve dispersion state and to remove impurities. Final nanocomposites were prepared by the freeze-drying process after dispersing the PS particles and the surface-modified MWCNTs in a ultrasonic bath. The effects of MWCNT content and nanotube length on rheological properties were evaluated by imposing the small-amplitude oscillatory shear flow. The PS/MWCNT nanocomposites showed that rheological properties were enhanced as the amount and length of MWCNT increased. It is speculated that the rheological characteristics of nanocomposites change from liquid-like to solid-like as the MWCNT amount increases, and the critical concentration to achieve network structure decreases as the nanotube length increases.
Nanoparticles with unsaturated poly(hydroxyalkanoate)s (UPHAs) biosynthesized with Pseudo-monas oleovorans were prepared by spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method. The influence of nanoparticle formation was investigated with various experimental parameters such as sonication conditions, sol-vent, surfactant and polymer contents, etc. The physical and chemical properties of UPHAS and its nanoparticles were characterized using $^1$H- and $\^$13/C-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and gel permeation chromatography. The morphology of particles was observed using scanning electron microscope and the size and distribution of nanoparticles were measured with electrophoretic light scattering spectrophotometer. The mean diameter of particles decreased with increasing sonication amplitude and time. The addition of ethanol into UPHAS chloroform solution decreased the particle size presumably due to increased solvent diffusion into water phase. The particle size increased with increased the concentration of UPHAS solution. Under the 2-4% poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) aqueous solution the minimum mean diameter of particles was shown. The higher degree of hydrolysis and degree of polymerization of PVA increased the mean diameter of particles.
In this study, the silane primers were introduced to improve the interface adhesion between copper and epoxy. Especially, the polymer types obtained by solution and emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization of vinyltriethoxysilane and the low molecular weight types of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(3-APTES) and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane(3-GPTMS) were used to improve the adhesion strength between epoxy and copper. Also, the surface of copper was treated by 1,1,1-trichloroethane. According to the results, the interfacial adhesion strength of copper-epoxy increased about 2~5 times with the introduction of silane primer. Also, the optimum treatment time of copper surface was about 10 minutes. Additionally, the adhesion strength as a function of concentration of low molecular weight silane was maximum at about 0.5 vol.% for 3-APTES and about 0.2 vol% for 3-GPTMS.
In preparing void latex particles by emulsion polymerization, the weight mean particle size of which is ranged $0.3{\mu}m{\sim}1.5{\mu}m$, reaction parameters were investigated in order to elucidate their effects on the size distribution and the solid content of emulsion polymer. Experimental results showed that the weight mean particle size of hydrophillic core polymer was reduced as the concentration of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDS) increased. The size of void polymethyl-methacrylate-polystyrene composite latex particles became larger as the concentration of styrene monomer and the sodium persulfate increased. However, the size of void latex particles was reduced as the feeding rate of acrylic acid increased. The solid content of emulsion polymer was strongly dependent on the addition of stylene monomer. By increasing the concentration of styrene monomer the solid content of emulsion polymer increased linearly.
This study is on the synthesis of reactive polymer modifiers by emulsion polymerization to improve properties of asphalt for paving. Styrene, methyl methacrylate (MMA), isoprene and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) which has epoxy ring to react with carboxyl group of asphaltene were used to synthesize polymer modifiers. Modifiers with various composition were tested miscibility with asphalt. Modifiers which showed good miscibility with asphalt were investigated by DSC for $T_g$. Existence of epoxy rings and their reaction with asphaltene wore investigated by FTIR. Molecular structures of synthesized modifiers were confirmed by $^1H-NMR$. The synthesized modifiers which showed good miscibility had their $Tg's$ in the range of $37.5{\sim}56.5^{\circ}C$ and had isoprene contents of 30 wt%. They showed good miscibility in the 1 and 2 wt% concentrations, but not in the 3 wt% concentration.

Graft polymerization of MMA onto cotton fiber was carried out in two ways, two step graft polymerization and one step emulsion graft polymerization, using tetravalent cerium ion as an initiator. At two step graft polymerization, the first step was the pretreatment of cotton fiber with an aqueous initiator solution and the second was the grafting pretreated cotton fiber in the monomer solution. In case of one step emulsion graft polymerization, MMA was emulsified with SLS in initiator solution. Under the various graft polymerization conditions, graft yield, graft efficiency and from the Arrhenius plot the apparent activation energy were compared. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Graft yield and graft efficiency of emulsion graft polymerization were higher than those of two step graft polymerization. 2. In case of two step graft polymerization, graft yield was affected by the pretreatment time of cotton fiber with an aqueous initiator solution. And graft yield of emulsion graft polymerization was increased with the concentration of emulsifier below cmc of SLS and was decreased thereafter. 3. Elevation of temperature resulted increase in graft yield for both grafting methods. The apparent activation energy of emulsion graft pelymerzation was lower than that of two step graft polymerization. 4. Increased reaction time increased in graft yield, but decreased in graft efficiency. 5. Moisture regain of grafted cotton was decreased with graft yield.
Regular, spherical and isotropic open-microcellular foams having low density were prepared by the high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) polymerization mainly composed of styrene monomer and water The effects of Polymerization conditions. such as the content of water, divinylbenzene as a crosslinking agent and dodecane as a chain transfer agent, were investigated based on the tell size and foam properties. The microstructural morphology was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the compression modulus of the foam was evaluated using compression test. The dropwise feeding of the aqueous phase into the oil phase was more effective than the batch feeding in producing the uniform and stable foam. Agitation speed and surfactant strongly influenced on the cell size and the window size between water droplets. Introduction of chain transfer agent increased the cell size, whereas it decreased the window size. Compression modulus increased with the crosslinking agent, but decreased with the chain transfer agent.
Encapsulation of a paraffin wax core as a phase change material with polystyrene shell and the its thermal characteristics caused by the encapsulation were studied. For the nanoencapsulation, the miniemulsion polymerization method was selected. The factors affecting the thermal properties of prepared nanocapsule particles of phase change material were analysed in aspect of the structure of crosslinking agents, amounts of surfactant, ratio of paraffin wax to monomer, and hydrophilicity of initiators. It was assumed that Oswald ripening plays the most important role in the changes of particle size, particle morphology, and thermal capacity of nanocapsule core. It was elucidated that the thermal capacity was also dependent on the hydrophilicity and crosslinking density of polystyrene shell components.
Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles were prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization of MMA in the presence of a cationic initiator, 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) (AIBA). The Stober method has been adopted to coat silica on the surface of these cationic particles. Negatively charged silica precursors were coated onto cationic particle surfaces by electronic interaction. During the coating process, hollow particles were directly obtained by dissolution of PMMA.
