Modern Interpretation of the Method of Learning Reflected in the Teacher-Student Relationship in On Haeng Lok by Toe-gye (퇴계 『언행록』의 사제관계에서 탐색한 학습법과 그 현대적 이해)

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze characteristics of the method of education or learning reflected in the teacher-student relationship in On Haeng Lok By Toe-gye and explore their relevance to modern education. By writing various works and conversing with his students, Toe-gye devoted himself in the education of the traditional Confucian principles. Specially, he taught his students based on two Confucian educative principles, namely Shim Deuk(心得) and Goong Haeng(躬行). Judging from this, Toe-gye can be seen as someone who tries to fulfill the role of teacher as dictated in the educative principles of the Confucianism. In Confucianism, teacher is responsible for forming a well-rounded view on life in student, rather than simply transmitting knowledge. As such, the teacher was supposed to find a harmonious way to create something new based on what was inherited from the past generation and try to do his best in learning new things himself and teaching his students. These Toe-gye managed to do successfully, earning his students' trust and respect. Being moved and inspired by their teacher, the students continued their intellectual pursuit. This relationship between Toe-gye and his students can be analyzed from the perspective of education method and discussed in terms of cognitive learning and adult learning. In terms of cognitive learning, the education method reflected in the relationship is similar to potential learning, insight learning, and imitation learning. In terms of adult learning, it is similar to self-directed learning and communicative learning.!

Noju Oh Hui-sang's ConfucianismDoctrine and its Characteristics (노주(老洲) 오희상(吳熙常)의 경설(經說)과 그 특징(特徵))

  • Noju Oh Hui-sang was a Confucian who was active during the reign of King Sunjo in late Joseon Dynasty and he also was a master of the Sallim faction. Though he is known as an eclectic Neo-Confucian, he had profound knowledge in the study of Confucian classics as well through succeeding the family study handed down by his father Oh Jae-sun and his oldest brother Oh Yun-sang. This thesis hereby examines Noju's Confucianism doctrine and its characteristics. Noju's Confucianism doctrine is characterized significantly with the following aspects. First, its analyses are detailed overall and it annotates chapters and verses mostly related to Neo-Confucian theories on interpretation of the Confucian classics. Second, it conducts in-depth study not only on Chu Hsi's annotation but also on the small commentaries (小注) in Compendium of the Commentaries on Four Chinese Classics (四書集註大全). In terms of Chu Hsi's theory, however, Noju interprets Confucian classics while supplementing shortcomings on Chu Hsi's theory rather than opposing it. For opinions of all philosophers and scholars on small commentaries, it expresses rather critical theories than supporting ones. Third, it quotes many theories not only of Chinese Confucians but also of Korean ones. It mainly introduces theories of Namdang Han Won-jin, including those of Yi Yulgok. Among them, it particularly has frequent quotations from Han Won-jin's Kyoungyigimunrok (經義記聞錄). Fourth, Noju actively acknowledges senior Confucians' theories many times in quoting them but he also daringly points out their errors when a theory is thought not to be appropriate. He indicates errors one by one in theories not only of Uam and Yulgok but even of Mencius. Fifth, it especially discusses Book of Changes (周易) in depth. It tends to criticize Chengzi's I-Chuan (易傳) but accept Chu Hsi's Benyi (本義). It roughly explains Book of Changes in general but seldom directly accounts for trigrams of it other than Qian trigram and it has detailed explanation especially on Xicizhuan (繫辭傳).

  • This paper aims to reveal the thoughts of Confucian Hong chanyu illuminate the literary activity. Hong chanyu is representative of the modern and contemporary Confucian scholars. In chapter 2, a Confucian scholar said the spirit of the Hong chanyu. He was considered unnecessarily cause and form. He thought it was a real need and times of where they live. Hong chanyu it was called moderation. Chapter 3 examined the literary activities of the Hong chanyu. One section made of a Chinese poetical circles for background. Gwansu meeting was created in winter 1976. member was of 13 people. They visited the natural scenery and historical sites found. And it was expressed written poetry.Section 2 says what kind is this Chinese poem they have created. The first is the content eulpeun history. The second is more satire in the world. The third is content to enjoy the tasteful in nature.

A Study on Religious Tendency shown in 「Gyeongseol」 by Jinam Lee Byeong-hun (진암(眞庵) 이병헌(李炳憲)의 「경설(經說)」에 나타난 종교적 성향)

  • Lee Byeong-hun was introduced to Hanjuhak when he was taught by Myeonwoo Gwak Jong-seok. It is assumed that Hanjuhak circles had a certain influence on formation of his ideas in that they had liberal tendency at that time. Lee Byeong-hun accepted Geummungyonghak developed by Gang Yu-wee of China and participated in Confucian Science Movement while excluding Confucianism. After he accepted western civilization and the ideas of Gang Yu-wee, no traces of Hanjuhak was found in his writing, but it is assumed that Hanjuhak might work as a nutritious element for his ideas. He thought that religious nature of Confucianism could be revived only when he left Neo-confucianism which changed Confucianism into a philosophy by insisting reason instead of God. So, he respected Confucius as a religious founder and left such concepts as reason and respect which were considered important in Neo-confucianism and valued disposition and faith in "Jungyong", a doctrine of the Mean. He considered Confucianism as religious and joined in religious practices such as praying and reciting scriptures. He insisted that filial piety indicates a filial son of the Heaven when interpreting the following passage: Shun (Chinese leader) is a filial duty, which is assumed that he was influenced by Christianity. He respected Confucius as the only religious founder and God as the God to make Confucianism a religion. It is believed that he considered only Confucius as a founder instead of traditional Confucian sages as religion such as Buddhism and Christianity has one founder. God he thought is related with the God in Christianity and furthermore accepted reincarnation of Buddhism which is contrary to Confucian ideas. According to "Gyeongseol" by Lee Byeong-hun, it was believed that he was engaged in religion based on a faith that Confucianism is a religion rather than he pursued Confucianism as a religion to find out a way of its survival.

  • This article introduce the status and research overview of Korean Confucianism in Eastern Asia with the macroscopic view. Mainly making Tuixi as an example on this basis, respectively make introduction and analysis of research overview among the modern Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Japan towards Korean Confucianism. The scholars who are from Chinese mainland think highly of the expression on meaning and principle in the research of Korean philosophy, which is shown the fair and peace; The scholars who come from Taiwan are obviously impacted by the western world(Taiwan uses the means influenced by the western thinking method) in the means of researching the Korean Confucianism; Japanese persistently rely on the literature and try to reproduce the objectivity of historicism. For decades, the research of Tuixi had made great achievements in Eastern Asia. It had understood the allover content of its thought, It is also worth thinking about the correlation between Tuixi psychology and Yinyang study in Japan, Japan and Taiwan in recent years. Any research is unavoidable to start from own countries, areas and ideological consciousness, but there is a question idea behind the back that comes from emotion and fact. Making the advantage in study meanings and communication in question consciousness will be beneficial to the continuous development of the study of Tuixi in depth and expand its influence.

A Study on the Adaptation to Korean College life of Uzbekistan Students' (재한 우즈베키스탄 유학생들의 한국 대학생활 적응에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out for the purpose of investigating Uzbekistan students's adaptation to Korea college life. Qualitative interviews were conducted in regards to the motivation for college entrance and stresses incurred during college life for 10 Uzbekistan students who were studying at I college located in Incheon. Data from the interviews were analyzed using theme analysis method. Most of the participants in this study got information about Korean colleges through their overseas study exhibitions in their own countries and became Korea college. The results showed that the reasons for college enrollment were (1)preparation for future goals (2)the influence of family. In Uzbekistan, parents play a big role in determining their children's education. Therefore, their decision to study abroad and the role of their parents were significant. The stress they experienced in college life fell into five categories, namely, (1)financial stress (2)stress about studies (3) stress in regards to human relationships (4)stress in regards to their futures and getting a job. In addition, this study discussed how to solve such as problems experienced by Uzbekistan students. And also the role of college and the necessity of providing appropriate support programs were discussed. Finally, the implications of these findings were presented.
