  • Since South Korea has problems existing in the respects of educational resources, environment, policies, etc., local universities of South Korea have been in an inferior position in the competition of overseas student enrollment. With increasingly deepening of cultural exchange between China and South Korea, due to geographic close relationship between the two countries, a great number of South Korean students go to China for study; also, Chinese students have increasingly become the important target of recruitment by all local universities in South Korea. In recent years, with rapid increase in the number of Chinese students in South Korea, the overseas student education system of South Korea has been progressed continuously. Compared with educational advantages of universities in European, American developed countries, and the capital region of South Korea, however there still exists a lot of problems in Chinese student recruitment by local universities. The major findings of the study can be summarized as follows. There exist not only some advantages but also some problems to be addressed urgently in Chinese student enrollment by South Korean local universities. How to build a distinctive recruitment environment suitable for Chinese students; and, how to develop a complete "one-stop" educational system suitable for study; and, how to make a strategy of development for Chinese students; and, how to perfect set up the overseas students' education management system; which are the remaining tasks to be solved for. To achieve a win-win for both overseas students and South Korean local universities, it is very important and urgent works to do for administrators of Chinese students in all local universities of South Korea.

  • The purpose of this case study is to examine and compare the basic characteristics of quality assurance systems of the 3 leading countries in international higher education: Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands. The comparative analysis of the three cases demonstrates that, taking a more commercial stance on the international education service market, quality assurance systems of the 3 countries aim at facilitating effective promotion of student recruitment and enhancing their national brand image as advanced knowledge society. Consequently, rules and regulations of their systems are concerned primarily with strengthening institutional capacities to educate international students effectively, and, ultimately, improving their learning experiences in the host countries. Compared to these foreign cases, the newly-adopted quality assurance system in Korea places too much emphasis on internationalization process itself, thereby neglecting evaluation of educational capabilities of higher education institutions. Further implications for improvement of the Korean International Education Quality Assurance System(IEQAS) are discussed.

  • Previous research on university life of Chinese students studying in Korea has been conducted on students in Korea, but Chinese students have a sense of belonging and university prejudice against Korean universities, so the objectivity of research is not clear. This paper conducted a survey of the Chinese people in China and conducted a media search for attracting foreign students. Not all foreign students are proficient in Korean language. Even students who have completed more than one year of education in the Korean language institutes or passed advanced level of Test of Proficiency in Korean(TOPIK) have difficulties in everyday life and acquiring a degree. According to the results of this study, until foreign students who lack sufficient Korean language skills are able to adapt to culture and acquire information in Korea, it is desirable to prepare multilingual content services so that they can obtain academic information or daily information necessary for studying in their native language.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explore Chinese students' difficulty and understanding of their relationship with Korean students. A total of 20 Chinese undergraduate students at a private university in Seoul were interviewed. Findings show that (1) Chinese students were separated from Korean students in their relationships; (2) Chinese students understood that Korean students were indifferent to Chinese students and pursue purposeful relationships with Chinese students; (3) Chinese students recognized that Korean students and people perceive China and Chinese people negatively, reasons including mass media in both China and Korea, political and economic relations between two countries, and lack of intercultural education in Korean education. This paper emphasizes the separation of Chinese students from Korean students despite the successful increase of international student population in Korean higher education, and concludes that international student recruitment and internationalization efforts in Korean higher education need to be directed toward facilitating relationships between Korean and international students, thereby promoting their quality of educational and sociocultural experience.
