  • Present study was performed to observe the tegumental ultrastructures by the developmental stages which derived from the experimental life cycle of Spirometra erinacei in laboratory conditions. In SEM view, coracidium was spherical in shape with numerous cilia, and its surface was covered with long cilia, tuberclelike projections with millet-like processes, and small holes. The body surface of procercoid was covered with numerous pointed microtriches except that of frontal pit with stout spine-like ones. However that of cercomer was covered with somewhat sparse blunt-tiped microtriches. Plerocercoids of 3 days old resembled the mature procercoid in shape, and their frontal pits were covered with numerous stout spine-like microtriches. However frontal pit and body surface in more than 5 days old ones were covered with conoid microtriches. On the surface of adult scolex, hairly long filamentous and stout short microtriches were mixedly distributed. Filamentous microtriches were more densely distributed in the anterior portion than in the posterior of scolex. The neck and immature proglottid were covered with only stout short conoid microtriches. In TEM view of coracidia, embryophore and oncosphere were obviously distinguished. The embryophore contained numerous glycogen particles, mitochondria and lipid granules. The cilia on the surface of embryophore rooted in the coracidial sheath, and consisted of 9 pairs of microtubules and 2 core complex. The oncosphere was covered with a thin and unarmed tegument, and was multi-nucleated. The protoplasmic layer of procercoid and plerocercoid consisted of disc-shaped bodies, vacuoles and mitochondria. Their tegumental cells commonly retained a nucleus, granular endoplasmic reticulums and secretory granules. The protoplasmic layer of plerocercoid was more compacted than that of procercoid. From the above results, it was confirmed that the tegumental ultrastructures are something different according to the developmental stages of S. erinacei.

  • Laboratory tests were carried out to evaluate the effect of several insecticides with insect growth regulator (IGR) properties on the larval development of housefly, Musca domestica, which was collected at a large pigpen in Hamyang, Gyeongnam, Korea in 1997. Commercial formulations of the chemicals were diluted with tap water into a range of concentrations, and mixed with larval media. In addition to the IGRs, imidacloprid 5% WP was tested, too. The IGRs treated at the 2nd instar stage induced higher larval mortalities than percentages of malformed pupae. The result were, however, opposite when the IGRs were treated at the 3rd instar stage. Overall mortality resulting from larval death and malformed pupae was dependent on concentration. Diflubenzuron, teflubenzuron, triflumuron, flufenoxuron, tebufenozide, and imidacloprid, treated to the 2nd instar larvae, showed mortality over 95 % at concentrations of 5 ppm, 3 ppm, 30 ppm, 5 ppm, over 1000 ppm, 1000 ppm, respectively. Higher concentrations were needed to get the same level. of mortality in the 3rd instar larvae as that in the 2nd larvae. Overall mortality over 95% at the 3rd instar could be get at concentrations of 100 ppm, 10 ppm, 300 ppm, 10 ppm of diflubenzuron, teflubenzuron, triflumuron, flufenoxuron, respectively. Tebufenozide (1,000 ppm) and imidacloprid (300 ppm) were less effective than the other chemicals, showing only 36.7% and 86.7% mortalities, respectively. The chemicals also affected pupal weight at high concentrations. Decrease of pupal weight was distinct at high concentrations of teflubenzuron, flufenoxuron, tebufenozide, imidacloprid. Diflubenzuron and triflumuron were less effective. From these results it could be concluded that the IGR insecticides can be used as control agents by interfering with moulting and pupation process of housefly, by reducing pupal weight which could be resulted in low fertility and less oviposition.

  • An epidemiological survey was carried out to determine the first intermediate host of Clinostomum complanatum among freshwater snails in Korea. Two species of snails belonging to the family Lymnaeidae were collected in Kaum-ji (pond) , Uisong-gun, Kyongsangbuk-do. Twelve (0.9%) out of 1,273 Radiae auricularia corecna examined were found to liberate cercariae of C. complcnatum, which were identified by morphologital characteristics and experimental infections in freshwater fish, Pseunorosborc pnnjc. The cercariae were brevifurcate and clinostomatoid. They had a transparent dorsal fin, a well developed penetrating organ and a pair of eye spots. The body measured $119-147{\;}{\times}{\;}33-36{\mu\textrm{m}}$, tail stem, tailstem은 $275-370{\;}{\times}{\;}19-26{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$, and furcae, $72-104{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$. Rediae were demonstrated in the infected snail after crushing. Redia, $527-1,630{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$ long and 121-368${\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$ wide, contained 10-45 germ balls and cercariae in various developmental stapes. The metacercariae recovered from fish experimentally infected with C. complanntum cercariae were morphologically identical to those from naturally infected fish.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the biological characteristics of Phanuromyia ricaniae (Hemiptera: Platygastroidea), an egg parasitoid of Ricania sp. (Hemiptera: Ricaniidae) as a biological control agent to control Ricania sublimata. The developmental period of P. ricaniae was 3.8 days for eggs, 11.1 days for larvae, and 16.3 days for pupae at 25℃, and 3.4 days for eggs, 7.8 days for larvae, and 15.3 days for pupae at 30℃. Except for the larval stage, the developmental periods were not significantly different, but the egg-to-pupa period at 30℃ was significantly shorter than that at 25℃. P. ricaniae emerged at the photophase in 24 hours, but not at the scotophase. A higher emergence rate (34.5%) was seen from 10:00 to 12:00 after the lights were turned. The female-to-male ratio of P. ricaniae was 3:1. The longevity of P. ricaniae adults was 49.0 days for females and 44.0 days for males at 20℃, 27.6 days for females and 28.4 days for males at 25℃, and 18 days for females and 14.0 days for males at 30℃. Its longevity at a low temperature (20℃) was longer than that at higher temperatures (25 and 30℃). Adult females laid eggs during all days except from 00:00-02:00 (scotophase time). The ovipositional distribution rate was 26.1% from 20:00 to 22:00, which was the peak, and the next peak was 15.7% at 10:00 to 12:00. P. ricaniae showed arrhenotokous parthenogenesis in which unfertilized eggs develop into males. Therefore, the results suggest that P. ricaniae may be a biological control agent for R. sublimata.

  • Maggot therapy (MT) has been re-introduced for non-healing wounds such as pressure sore, diabetic and necrotic ulcers, as well as infected surgical wounds, burn, and trauma injuries since early 1990s. For the production of sterile maggot of proper developmental stage, Lucilia sericata were studied on developmental periods of immature stages on liver agar medium under six different temperatures such as 15.4, 20.6, 22.5, 26.2, 29.1, and $33.0^{\circ}C$, and adult longevity and egg Production under $29^{\circ}C$. The periods of eggs and larvae of the 1st and the 2nd instars were shortest at $33^{\circ}C$ by 9.0, 14.0 and 18.6 hours, respectively. The periods of the 3rd instar larvae and pupae were shortest at $29.1^{\circ}C$ by 285.0 and 171.0 hours, respectively. Developmental zero point and total effective temperature far the development of each stage were calculated based on the developmental periods. Adults of both female and male lived more than one month. Females laid an average of 338.5 eggs through 2.7 times of egg laying throughout her lifetime.

  • The black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, is a generalist detritivore that is usually exploited for recycling environmental wastes, including food remnants. These insects can also be used to produce antibiotics for medical applications. For this purpose, flies need to be mass-reared using an automatic rearing system that generates various sounds. Insects use sound as a means of communication for mating or warning against predators. Thus, extrinsic sounds may interrupt the normal physiological processes of insects. In this study, we analyzed the physiological changes due to various sound treatments at $25^{\circ}C$ and 8:16 h (L:D) photoperiod. At 95 dB, larvae were exposed to different sound frequencies (0-5,000 Hz). The treated larvae were adversely affected by the high-frequency sounds and showed significant reduction in pupation and adult emergence. Different sound intensities (0-105 dB) at 5,000 Hz caused significant changes in the pupation and survival of the adults at 85 dB or above. Under a stress sound condition (5,000 Hz, 95 dB), the BSF larvae exhibited aberrations in the expression of genes related to the immune system and digestion. These results indicate that high-frequency sound treatments at or above 85 dB act as a stress sound to BSF development.

  • The developmental times of the immature stages of Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) were investigated at ten constant temperatures (12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 27.5, 30, 32.5, $35{\pm}1^{\circ}C$), 20~30% RH, and a photoperiod of 14:10 (L:D) h. Eggs were successfully developed on each tested temperature regimes except $12.5^{\circ}C$ and its developmental time was longest at $15^{\circ}C$ (22.5 days) and shortest at $32.5^{\circ}C$ (5.5 days). Nymphs successfully developed to the adult stage from $15^{\circ}C$ to $32.5^{\circ}C$ temperature regimes. Developmental time was longest at $15^{\circ}C$ (51.9 days) and it was decreased with increasing temperature up to $32.5^{\circ}C$ (9.0 days). The relationships between developmental rate and temperature were fitted by a linear model and seven nonlinear models (Analytis, Briere 1, 2, Lactin 2, Logan 6, Performance and modified Sharpe & DeMichele). The lower threshold temperature of egg and total nymphal stage was $10.2^{\circ}C$ and $12.3^{\circ}C$ respectively. The thermal constant required to complete egg and nymphal stage were 122.0 and 156.3 DD, respectively. The Briere 1 model was best fitted ($r^2$= 0.88~0.99) for all developmental stages, among seven nonlinear models. The distribution of completion of each development stage was well described by three non-linear models (2-parameter, 3-parameter Weibull and Logistic) ($r^2$= 0.91~0.96) except second and fifth instar.

  • This study was performed to investigate the bionomical characteristics of Allomyrina dichotoma in Korea. The imaginal stage was from late June to late August, and the advent of imagoes was the most frequent in mid-July. The larvae inhibited in humus and the period of larva was all completed in late October. At the stage of the third larva, the larvae entered into the hibernation. The average number of laid eggs was 24, and all periods of each stage - eggs, first, second, third instar larvae and pupa - were shortened in $30^{\circ}C$ than in $25^{\circ}C$. As for the longevity of imagoes, female, reared in individual and in low temperature lived longer than male, in group and in high temperature, respectively.
