  • As ships become faster, larger and are required to meet higher standards, the importance of flow noise is highlighted. However, unlike in the aeroacoustics field for airplanes and trains (where flow noise is considered in design), acoustics are not considered in the marine field. In this study, analysis procedures for hull-induced flow noise are established to investigate the flow noise characteristics of a wave-piercing hull form that can negate the effect of wave-breaking. The principal mechanisms behind hull-induced flow noise are fluid-structure interactions between complex flows underneath the turbulent boundary layer and the hull. Noise induced by the turbulent boundary layer was calculated using wall pressure fluctuation and energy flow analysis methods. The results obtained show that noise characteristics can be distinguished by frequency range and hull region. Also, the low-frequency range is affected by hull forms such that it is correlated with ship speed.

  • When ships and offshore plants are flooded or the floating crane is equipped with a heavy object, these floating structures are excessively inclined. In this case, immersion, heel, and trim affecting the hydrostatic restoration performance are very large and are coupled each other. In this paper, in order to calculate a static equilibrium position of floating structures with excessive inclination, the nonlinear governing equations were constructed by sequential linearization. In the governing equation, the immersion, heel, and trim are fully coupled, and the equations are represented using a plane area, a primary moment, and a moment of inertia of the water plane area. Therefore, it is possible to calculate the additional factor related the water plane area for estimating stability. Position and orientation of the floating structure are obtained by iterative calculation. The calculated results are compared with the previous studies in the aspect to the performance and the accuracy.

  • The acoustical scattering characteristics of a target are influenced by the material properties and structural characteristics of the target, which are critical information for acoustic detection and identification of underwater target. In particular, for thin elastic target, unique scattered signals are generated around the target by the Lamb wave. In this paper, the results of scattered signal measurement of aluminum spherical shell in the water tank using the stepped frequency sweep sine signal are presented. In particular, the scattering of the water-filled aluminum spherical shell is compared with that of the air-filled one both theoretically and experimentally. The difference of the scattered signals are analyzed using the pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution in terms of average frequency, frequency distribution, and energy of the scattered signal. The result shows that all observed parameters increased when the aluminum sphere was water-filled, and it is well matched to the theoretical expectation.

  • There has been an increasing number of studies on photovoltaic energy generation system in an offshore site with the largest energy generation efficiency, as increasing the researches and developments of renewable energies for use of offshore space and resources to replace existing fossil fuels and resolve environmental challenges. For installation and operation of floating photovoltaic systems in an offshore site with harsher environmental conditions, a stiffness of structural members comprising the total system must be reinforced to inland water spaces as dams, reservoirs etc., which have relatively weak condition. However, there are various limitations for the reinforcement of structural stiffness of the system, including producible size, total mass of the system, economic efficiency, etc. Thus, in this study, a floating breakwater is considered for reducing wave loads on the system and minimizing the reinforcement of the structural members. Wave reduction performances of floating breakwaters are evaluated, considering size and distance to the system. The wave loads on the system are evaluated using the higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM), considering the multi-body effect of buoys. Stresses on structural members are assessed by coupled analyses using the finite element method (FEM), considering the wave loads and hydrodynamic characteristics. As the maximum stresses on each of the cases are reviewed and compared, the effect of floating breakwater for floating photovoltaic system is checked, and it is confirmed that the size of breakwater has a significant effect on structural responses of the system.

  • The slender structures such as high rise building or marine riser are highly susceptible to dynamic force exerted by fluid-structure interactions among which vortex-induced vibration(VIV) is the main cause of dynamic unstability of the structural system. If VIV occurs in natural frequency regime of the structure, fatigue failure likely happens by so-called lock-in phenomenon. This study presents the numerical analysis of dynamic behavior of both structure and fluid in the lock-in regimes and investigates the subjacent phenomena to hold the resonance frequency in spite of the change of flow condition. Unsteady and laminar flow was considered for a two-dimensional circular cylinder which was assumed to move freely in 1 degree of freedom in the direction orthogonal to the uniform inflow. Fluid-structure interaction was implemented by solving both unsteady flow and dynamic motion of the structure sequentially in each time step where the fluid domain was remeshed considering the movement of the body. The results show reasonable agreements with previous studies and reveal characteristic features of the lock-in phenomena. Not only the lift force but also drag force are drastically increasing during the lock-in regime, the vertical displacement of the cylinder reaches up to 20% of the diameter of the cylinder. The correlation analysis between lift and vertical displacement clearly show the dramatic change of the phase difference from in-phase to out-of-phase when the cylinder experiences lock-in. From the results, it can be postulated that the change of phase difference and flow condition is responsible for the resonating behavior of the structure during lock-in.

  • This study focused on the roll motion characteristics of a two-dimensional (2D) rectangular floating structure under regular beam sea conditions. An experiment was conducted in a 2D wave tank for a roll free decay test in calm water and the roll motion in a range of regular waves with and without heave motion to investigate the motion response and heave influence on the roll motion. A numerical study was carried out using Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS)-based CFD simulations. A grid convergence test was conducted to accurately capture the wave condition on the free surface based on the overset mesh and wave forcing method. It was found in the roll free decay test that the numerical results agreed well with the experimental results for the natural roll period and roll damping coefficient. It was also observed that the heave motion had an impact on the roll motion, and the responses of the heave and roll motion from the CFD simulations were in reasonable agreement with those from the experiment.
