  • Flow instability in the rocket turbo pump systems can be caused by various elements such as valve, orifice and venturi and etc. The formation of cavitation specially in the propellant feeding system can trigger the mass flow and pressure oscillation due to cyclic formation and depletion of cavitations. If the cryogenic propellant are used, which is very sensitive to temperature variation, the change of propellant properties due to thermodynamic effect should be accounted for in the flow analysis. This study focuses on the formation of cryogenic cavitation adopting MUSHY IDM model suggested by Shyy and coworkers. Also, the flow instability is investigated with developed numerical code in the downstream of orifice flow. To this end, three different orifices are selected and investigated by the numerical calculation.

  • This paper presents the results of fluidelastic instability analysis performed for the U-tube bundle of a Westinghouse model 51 steam generator, one of the recirculating types designed at an early stage, in which the principal region of external cross-flow is associated with the U-bend portion of tube. The prerequisites for this analysis are detailed informations of the secondary side flow conditions in the steam generator and the free vibration behaviours of the U-tubes. In this study, the three-dimensional two-phase flow field in the steam generator has been calculated employing the ATHOS3 steam generator two-phase flow code and the ANSYS engineering analysis code has been used to calculate the free vibration responses of specific U tubes under consideration. The assessment of the potential instability for the suspect U-tubes, which is the final analysis process of the present work, has been accomplished by combining the secondary side velocity and density distributions obtained from the ATHOS3 prediction with the relative modal displacement and natural frequency data calculated using the ANSYS code. The damping of tubes in two-phase flow has been deduced from the existing experimental data by taking into account the secondary side void fraction effect. In operation of the steam generator, the tube support conditions at the tube-to-tube support plate intersections due to either tube denting degradation or deposition of tube support plate corrosion products or ingression of dregs. Thus, various hypothetical cases regarding the tube support conditions at the tube-to-tube support plate intersections have been considered to investigate the clamped support effects on the forced vibration response of the tube. Also, the effect of anti-vibration bars support in the curved portion of tube has been examined.

  • This study deals with dynamic instability of a tendon moored submerged floating tunnel (SFT) due to tendon slack. In general, environmental loadings such as wave and current govern SFT design. Especially, the wave force, whose amplitude and direction continuously change, directly induces the dynamic behavior of the SFT. The motion of the floating tube, induced by the wave force, leads dynamic response of the attached tendons and the dynamic change of internal forces of the tendons significantly affects to the fatigue design as well as the structural strength design. When the severe motion of the SFT occurs due to significant waves, tendons might lose their tension and slack so that the floating tube can be transiently instable. In this study, the characteristics of dynamic instability of the SFT due to tendon slack are investigated performing hydrodynamic analysis. In addition, the effects of draft, buoyancy-weight ratio, and tendon inclination on tendon slack and dynamic instability behavior are analytically investigated.

  • The atomizing characteristics in a spray injected from a twin fluid atomization nozzle have been investigated. The Sauter mean diameters as mean diameter are compared with wavelength calculated from the instability theory. The Sauter mean diameter are measured by the Fraunhofer diffraction theory using the Malvern particle sizer. The wavelength is calculated using the mean relative velocity instead of the exit relative velocity of nozzle. Also shadowgraphy technique is used to visualize atomization phenomena. This paper gives a possibility that the mean diameter can be predicted with the wavelength obtained by the simple instability theory.

  • The ratio of disk friction loss in a centrifugal pump is very large for the total pump loss in the range of very low specific speed. Therefore, impeller radius should be shortened to increase the pump efficiency because the disk friction loss is proportional to the fifth power of impeller radius. In order to compensate the decreased head by the shortened impeller radius, vane angle at impeller outlet should be increased. However, as the vane angle at impeller outlet becomes larger, performance instability occurs at low flow rate regions. In this study, J-Groove is adopted to suppress the performance instability and detailed examination is performed for the influence of the J-Groove on the pump performance. The results show that J-Groove gives good effect on the suppression of performance instability. Moreover, as J-Groove increases pump head considerably, the pump size can be smaller for head requirements.

  • Using wind tunnel, experimental approaches were employed to investigate fluidelastic instability of tube bundles, subjected to uniform cross flow. There are several flow-induced vibration excitation mechanisms, such as fluidelastic instability, periodic wake shedding resonance, turbulence-induced excitation and acoustic resonance, which could cause excessive vibration in shell-and tube heat exchanges. Fluidelastic is the most important vibration excitation mechanism for heat exchanger tube bundles subjected to cross flow. The system comprised of cantilevered flexible cylinder(s) and rigid cylinders of normal square array, In order to see the characteristics of flow in tube bundles, particle image velocimetry was used. From a practical design point of view, Fluidelastic instability may be expressed simply in terms of dimensionless flow velocity and dimensionless mass-damping. The threshold flow velocity for dynamic instability of cylinder rows is evaluated and the data for design guideline is proposed for the tube bundles of normal square array.
