Although a yacht sails operate with large displacement due to very thin thickness, many studies for flow around yacht sails have not considered the sail deformation. The sail deformation not only caused a change in the center of effect(CE) on the sail but also a change in the thrust of the sail. The change of the CE and thrust affects the center of lateral resistance(CLR) and side forces of the hull, and the balance of the yacht. These changes affect the motion of the yacht which changes the velocity of the yacht. Thus, when analyzing the flow around yacht sails, the sail deformation should be considered. In the present study, fluid-structure-interaction(FSI) analysis of a two dimensional section of yacht sails was performed to consider the effects of sail deformation on the lift and drag performance. FSI and moving mesh methods were studied. Computational methods were verified using benchmark test cases such as the flow around horizontal and vertical cantilever beams. Shape deformation, pressure distribution, lift forces and separation flow were compared for both rigid and deformable sail.

Gas turbine blades that have complex geometry of the cooling holes and cooling passages are usually subjected to cyclic and sustained thermal loads due to changes in the operating characteristic in combined power plants; these results in non-uniform temperature and stress distributions according to time to gas turbine blades. Those operation conditions cause creep or thermo-mechanical fatigue damage and reduce the lifetime of gas turbine blades. Thus, an accurate analysis of the stresses caused by various loading conditions is required to ensure the integrity and to ensure an accurate life assessment of the components of a gas turbine. It is well known that computational analysis such as cross-linking process including CFD, heat transfer and stress analysis is used as an alternative to demonstration test. In this paper, temperatures and stresses of gas turbine blade were calculated with fluid-structural analysis integrating fluid-thermal-solid analysis methodologies by considering actual operation conditions. Based on analysis results, additionally, the total lifetime was obtained using creep and thermo-mechanical damage model.

There is a big risk of bullet impact because military rotorcraft is run in the battle environment. Due to the bullet impact, the rapid increase of the internal pressure can cause the internal explosion or fire of fuel cell. It can be a deadly damage on the survivability of crews. Then, fuel cell of military rotorcraft should be designed taking into account the extreme situation. As the design factor of fuel cell, the internal fluid pressure, structural stress and bullet kinetic energy can be considered. The verification test by real object is the best way to obtain these design data. But, it is a big burden due to huge cost and long-term preparation efforts and the failure of verification test can result in serious delay of a entire development plan. Thus, at the early design stage, the various numerical simulations test is needed to reduce the risk of trial-and-error together with prediction of the design data. In the present study, the bullet impact numerical simulation based on SPH(smoothed particle hydrodynamic) is conducted with the commercial package, LS-DYNA. Then, the resulting equivalent stress, internal pressure and bullet's kinetic energy are evaluated in detail to examine the possibility to obtain the configuration design data of the fuel cell.

In this study, the effects of the wave field changes due to the coastal structure on the hydrodynamic performance of the OWC wave energy, converter are analyzed using a three-dimensional numerical wave tank technique (NWT). The OWC device is simulated numerically by introducing a linear pressure drop model, considering the coupling effect between the turbine and the OWC chamber in the time domain. The flow distribution around the chamber is different due to the change of reflection characteristics depending on the consideration of the breakwater model. The wave energy captured from the breakwater is spatially distributed on the plane of the front of the breakwater, and the converted pneumatic power increased when concentrated in front of the chamber. The change of the standing wave distribution is repeated according to the relationship between the incident wavelength and the length of the breakwater, and the difference in energy conversion performance of the OWC was confirmed.

There has been an increasing number of studies on photovoltaic energy generation system in an offshore site with the largest energy generation efficiency, as increasing the researches and developments of renewable energies for use of offshore space and resources to replace existing fossil fuels and resolve environmental challenges. For installation and operation of floating photovoltaic systems in an offshore site with harsher environmental conditions, a stiffness of structural members comprising the total system must be reinforced to inland water spaces as dams, reservoirs etc., which have relatively weak condition. However, there are various limitations for the reinforcement of structural stiffness of the system, including producible size, total mass of the system, economic efficiency, etc. Thus, in this study, a floating breakwater is considered for reducing wave loads on the system and minimizing the reinforcement of the structural members. Wave reduction performances of floating breakwaters are evaluated, considering size and distance to the system. The wave loads on the system are evaluated using the higher-order boundary element method (HOBEM), considering the multi-body effect of buoys. Stresses on structural members are assessed by coupled analyses using the finite element method (FEM), considering the wave loads and hydrodynamic characteristics. As the maximum stresses on each of the cases are reviewed and compared, the effect of floating breakwater for floating photovoltaic system is checked, and it is confirmed that the size of breakwater has a significant effect on structural responses of the system.

While the structural safety assessment of Cargo Containment System(CCS) in membrane type LNG carriers has to be carried out in consideration of sloshing impact pressure, it is very difficult to figure out its dynamic response behaviors due to its very complex structural arrangements/materials and complicated phenomena of sloshing impact loading. For the development of its original technique, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of dynamic response behavior of CCS structure under sloshing impact pressure. In this study, for the exact understanding of dynamic response behavior of CCS structure in membrane Mark III type LNG carriers under sloshing impact pressure, its wet drop impact response analyses were carried out by using Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code, and were also validated through a series of wet drop experiments for the enhancement of more accurate shock response analysis technique. It might be thought that the structural response behaviors of impact response analysis, such as impact pressure impulses and resulted strain time histories, generally showed very good agreement with experimental ones with very appropriate use of FSI analysis technique of LS-DYNA code, finite element modeling and material properties of CCS structure, finite element modeling and equation of state(EOS) of fluid domain.

In the previous study, the wet drop impact response analyses of CCS structure in membrane Mark III type LNG carriers were carried out by using Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code, and were also validated through a series of wet drop experiments for the enhancement of more accurate shock response analysis technique. In this study, the characteristics of structural shock response behaviors of CCS structure were sufficiently figured out by careful examinations of the effects of specimen weight, drop height, incident angle, corrugation and stiffness of inner hull on its shock response behaviors. The shock response analysis of upward shooting fluid to inner hull was performed, and the reason of faster strain response than shock pressure one was also figured out.

The rotor blade is an important component of a tidal stream turbine and is affected by a large thrust force and load due to the high density of seawater. Therefore, the performance must be secured through the geometrical and structural design of the blade and the blade structural safety to which the composite material is applied. In this study, a 1 MW class large turbine blade was designed using the blade element momentum (BEM) theory. GFRP is a fiber-reinforced plastic used for turbine blade materials. A sandwich structure was applied with CFRP to lay-up the blade cross-section. In addition, to evaluate structural safety according to flow variations, static load analysis within the linear elasticity range was performed using the fluid-structure interactive (FSI) method. Structural safety was evaluated by analyzing tip deflection, strain, and failure index of the blade due to bending moment. As a result, Model-B was able to reduce blade tip deflection and weight. In addition, safety could be secured by indicating that the failure index, inverse reserve factor (IRF), was 1 or less in all load ranges excluding 3.0*Vr of Model-A. In the future, structural safety will be evaluated by applying various failure theories and redesigning the laminated pattern as well as the change of blade material.

The slender structures such as high rise building or marine riser are highly susceptible to dynamic force exerted by fluid-structure interactions among which vortex-induced vibration(VIV) is the main cause of dynamic unstability of the structural system. If VIV occurs in natural frequency regime of the structure, fatigue failure likely happens by so-called lock-in phenomenon. This study presents the numerical analysis of dynamic behavior of both structure and fluid in the lock-in regimes and investigates the subjacent phenomena to hold the resonance frequency in spite of the change of flow condition. Unsteady and laminar flow was considered for a two-dimensional circular cylinder which was assumed to move freely in 1 degree of freedom in the direction orthogonal to the uniform inflow. Fluid-structure interaction was implemented by solving both unsteady flow and dynamic motion of the structure sequentially in each time step where the fluid domain was remeshed considering the movement of the body. The results show reasonable agreements with previous studies and reveal characteristic features of the lock-in phenomena. Not only the lift force but also drag force are drastically increasing during the lock-in regime, the vertical displacement of the cylinder reaches up to 20% of the diameter of the cylinder. The correlation analysis between lift and vertical displacement clearly show the dramatic change of the phase difference from in-phase to out-of-phase when the cylinder experiences lock-in. From the results, it can be postulated that the change of phase difference and flow condition is responsible for the resonating behavior of the structure during lock-in.
Rectangular box type structures are used in many fields of civil, mechanical and marine engineering. Especially, Most ship structures are often in contact with inner or outer fluid, like ballast, fuel and stem tanks. Fatigue damages are sometimes observed in these tanks which seem to be caused by resonance with exciting force of engine and propeller. Vibration characteristics of these thin walled tanks in contact with fluid near engine and propeller are strongly affected by added mass of containing fluid. Therefore it is essentially important to estimate the added mass effect to predict vibration of the tanks. Many authors have studied vibration of rectangular tanks containing fluid. Few research on dynamic interaction among tank walls filled with fluid are reported in the vibration of rectangular tanks recently. In case of rectangular tanks, structural coupling between adjacent panels and effect of vibration modes of multiple panels on added mass of water have to be considered. In the previous report, a numerical analysis is performed for the coupling effect between panels of a tank on added mass of containing fluid, the effect of structural constraint between panels on each vibration mode for fluid region, and mode characteristics in accordance with changing breadth of the plates by using finite element method for plates and boundary element method for fluid region. In this paper, the coupling effect between panels of a tank on added mass of containing fluid, the effect of structural constraint between panels on each vibration mode for fluid region, and mode characteristics in accordance with changing length, thickness, and boundary condition of the plates are investigated numerically and discussed.
