  • This report is to provide a comparison of the hydrodynamic characteristics of a single strut SWATH(Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull) model and a tandem(twin) strut SWATH model. The hydrodynamic characteristics included are the resistance in calm water, 6 degree freedom of motion responses in stationary and with forward speeds, and wave loadings etc. All these quantities are measured in the towing tank and compared with the computational results. Based on the present study, the pros and cons for single and tandem strut SWATH designs are clarified and some design suggestions are made.

  • Offshore wind power structures are subject to coastal hydrodynamic loading such as wind and wave loads. A considerable number of turbines have been installed in Europe, but so far none in Korea. Interest in offshore wind energy is growing in Korea, and it is expected that projects will reach the design stage in the near future. This paper discusses the level of structural reliability implied by the design rules of ABS(2010, 2013) and IEC(2009). Metocean conditions in 4 Korean seas(Gunsan, HeMOSU 1, Mokpo, Jeju) were used in the calibrations to calculate the aerodynamic and hydrodynamic loads as well as the structural responses of the typical designs of offshore wind turbines. Due to the higher variability of the wind and wave climate in hurricane-prone areas, applying IEC strength design criteria in combination with Korea west sea conditions could result in a design with much lower reliability index than what is anticipated from a design in European waters. To achieve the same level of safety as those in European waters, application of ABS 100 year design standards are recommended. Level-1 reliability-based design suitable for the Korean sea state conditions should be introduced because the IEC standards does not consider the typhoon effects in depth and the ABS standards is a WSD design method. In addition, the design equation should be established based on the statistical characteristics of the wind and wave loads of the Korean sea areas.

  • In this paper, a Rankine source method is applied and validated to analyze the hydrodynamic response of a three-dimensional floating structure in the frequency domain. The boundary value problems for radiation and diffraction problem are solved by using a desingularized indirect boundary integral equation method (DIBIEM). The DIBIEM is simpler and faster than conventional methods based on the numerical surface integration of Green's function because the singularities of Green's function are located outside of fluid regions. In case of floating structure with complex geometry, it is difficult to desingularize the singularities of Green's function consistently. Therefore a mixed approach is carried out in this study. The mixed approach is partially desingularized except singularities of the body. Wave drift loads are calculated by the middle-field formulation method that is mathematically simple and has fast convergence. In order to validate the accuracy of the developed program, various numerical simulations are carried out and these results are analyzed and compared with previously published calculations and experiments.

  • In this study, dynamic load and dynamic contact force between a building block and wire ropes of a goliath crane are calculated during lifting or turn-over of a building block for the design of an optimal lug arrangement system. In addition, a multibody dynamics kernel for implementing the system were developed. In the multibody dynamics kernel, the equations of motion are constructed using recursive formulation. To evaluate the applicability of the developed kernels, the interferences and dynamic contact force between the building block and wire ropes were calculated and then the hull structural analysis for the block was performed using the calculation result.

  • In this study, we calculate dynamic constrained force of tower top and blade root of a floating offshore wind turbine. The floating offshore wind turbine is multibody system which consists of a floating platform, a tower, a nacelle, and a hub and three blades. All of these parts are regarded as a rigid body with six degree-of-freedom(DOF). The platform and the tower are connected with fixed joint, and the tower, the nacelle, and the hub are successively connected with revolute joint. The hub and three blades are connected with fixed joint. The recursive formulation is adopted for constructing the equations of motion for the floating wind turbine. The non-linear hydrostatic force, the linear hydrodynamic force, the aerodynamic force, the mooring force, and gravitational forces are considered as external forces. The dynamic load at the tower top, rotor shaft, and blade root of the floating wind turbine are simulated in time domain by solving the equations of motion numerically. From the simulation results, the mutual effects of the dynamic response between the each part of the floating wind turbine are discussed and can be used as input data for the structural analysis of the floating offshore wind turbine.

  • In general, the large loads which are applied from explosion, impact, earthquake and wind at a short time caused the materials of structures to large deformations, rotations and strains locally. If such phenomena will be analyzed, hydrocodes which can be considered fluid-structure interaction under computational continuum mechanics are inevitably needed. Also, the explosion mechanism is so complicated, it is reasonable that the behaviors of structure are predicted through explosion analyses and experiment at the same time. But, unfortunately, it is true that explosion experiments are limited to huge cost, large experiment facilities and safety problems. Therefore, in this study, it is shown that the results of explosion analyses using the AUTODYN are agreed with those of existing explosion experiments for reinforced concrete slabs within reasonable error limits. And the explosion damage of the same reinforced concrete slab are assessed for quite different reinforcement arrangement spacings, concrete cover depths, and vertical reinforcements. From the explosion analyses, it is known that the more the ratio of slab thickness to reinforcement arrangement spacing is increased, and small-diameter reinforcements are used than large-diameter reinforcements on the same reinforcement ratio, and vertical reinforcements are used, the more the anti-knock capacities are improved.
