  • A Hybrid technique is introduced in this paper for a manipulator with 2 DOF flexible links. The manipulator dynamics plus the actuator dynamics is controlled by taking force feedback for the end-effector of the link 2 while controlling the position of link I to control the position of the end-effector.

  • In this paper, we propose an object recognition method using image information to improve the efficiency of visual servoingfor industrial manipulators in industry. This is an image-processing method for real-time responses to an abnormal situation or to external environment change in a work object by utilizing camera-image information of an industrial manipulator. The object recognition method proposed in this paper uses the Otsu method, a thresholding technique based on separation of the V channel containing color information and the S channel, in which it is easy to separate the background from the HSV channel in order to improve the recognition rate of the existing Harris Corner algorithm. Through this study, when the work object is not placed in the correct position due to external factors or from being twisted, the position is calculated and provided to the industrial manipulator.

  • This paper proposes a stable adaptive neural network control(NNC) for fixable joint manipulators. For designing the stable adaptive NNC, the flexible system dynamics is separated into fast and slow subdynamics according to singular perturbation concept. For the slow subdynamics, an adaptive NNC is designed to warrant the system stability and NN learning by lyapunov stability criterion. And to stabilize the fast dynamics, derivative control loop is installed. Through numerical simulation, the performance of the proposed NNC was compared to that of an adaptive controller designed based on the knowledge of the system dynamics. The proposed NNC shows much improvement over the conventional adaptive controller.

  • The aim of this paper is to clarify the structural compliance of the constrained flexible manipulator and to develop the force control algorithm by using the compliance of the links. The proposed structural compliance control consists of the position control to utilize a flexible manipulator model (considering the compensation for the elastic deflection of links) and the passive force control to utilize the rigid manipulator model (without considering the compensation for the elastic deflection of links). We present the experimental results for the case when applying the only position control, and when applying the structural compliance control. Finally, a comparison between these results is presented to show the performance of our method.

  • An improved robust control law is proposed for uncertain rigid robots. The uncertainty is nonlinear and (possibly fast) time-varying. Therefore, the uncertain factors such as imperfect modeling, friction, payload change, and external disturbances are all addressed. Based on the possible bound of the uncertainty, the controller is constructed. For uncertain flexible-joint robots, some feedback control terms are then added to the proposed robust control law in order to stabilize the elastic vibrations at the joints. To show that the proposed control laws are indeed applicable, the stability study based on Lyapunov function, a singular perturbation approach, and simulation results are presented.

  • Like many other mechanical dynamic systems, flexible manipulator systems experience stiction or sticking friction, which may cause input-dependent instabilities. Manipulator performance can be enha nced by identifying friction but it is hard and expensive to measure friction by direct and precise sensing of contact displacements and forces. This study addresses the problem of identifying flexible manipulator joint friction. A dynamic model of a two-link flexible manipulator based upon finite element and Lagrange's method is constructed. The dynamic model includes the effects of joint compliances and actuator dynamics. Friction is also incorporated in the dynamic model to account for stick-slip at the joints. Next, the friction parameters are to be determined. The identification problem is posed as an optimization problem to be solved using nonlinear programming methods. A genetic algorithm is used to increase the convergence rate and the chances of finding the global optimum. The identified friction parameters are experimentally verified and it is expected that the identification technique is applicable to a system parameter identification problem associated with a wide class of nonlinear systems.

  • In this paper, Nonlinear VSS control based on bang-bang control concept is derived under the assumption that the control input is bounded. We try to derive control algorithm which has almost same performance as the time optimal control. We focus this control scheme on the real implementation of DC motor position controller of flexible link, i.e. we obtain the switching curves from the real data of DC motor system operating under the full maximum and minimum applied voltages. State space is separated into several regions and we set different switching surfaces in each region to reduce chattering problem. The efficiency of the proposed controller is compared with PID controller and it is shown that the controller converges fast than PID controller without chattering. The hybrid controller scheme is also proposed not only to control the position of hub but also to reduce the vibration of end tip of flexible link.

  • This paper presents a new control strategy for the position and force control of a flexible manipulator. The governing equation of motion of a two-link flexible manipulator which features a piezoceramic actuator is derived via Hamilton's principle. The control torque of the motor to command desired position and force is determined by a sliding mode controller. This controller is formulated to take account of parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. During the commanded motion, undesirable oscillation is actively suppressed by applying a feedback control voltage to the piezoceramic actuator. Consequently, an accurate compliant motion control of the flexible manipulator is achieved. Computer simulations are undertaken in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control methodology.

  • This paper proposes an adaptive control system using a 80286 microprocessor-based system and DC servo motors for the control of flexible joint manipulator. In this paper, we construct the controller based on a singular perturbation strategy damping out the elastic oscillations at the joints. we added to the controller the compensator for damping the joint and the term for decreasing the position error between the actuator and the link in order to improve the asymptotical convergence of the position of the link. It is shown that the implementation of this control algorithm can be practical.

  • This note is concerned with the point to point control of manipulators having elastic joints. We present a PD control algorithm which is adaptive with respect to the gravity and elastic parameters of robot manipulators. While the conventional control law is used, a new adaptive law is used to improve the performance. The proposed controller is shown to be stable. It is Shown that steady-state position error converges to zero through some simulations concerning the manipulator with three revolute elastic joints.
