  • In this study, the distribution of lectin receptors in Paragonimus westermani tissue was explored using colloidal gold label complexed with lectin WGA purified from wheat germ (Triticum vulgare). The lectin WGA gold complex, shown to recognize GlcNAc (N-acetylgalactosamine) and NeuNAc (N-acetylneuraminic acid) regions, was applied to detect binding sites in Lowicryl HM 20 sections viewed under electron microscope. Labeled sections of the metacercaria revealed gold particles specifically distributed on the tegumental syncytium and lamella of the excretory canal. Labeling of young adult tissue was then quantified and compared to that of adult worm tissue. Adult worm tissue sections resulted in specific gold particle distribution on the lamella of caecal epithelium and excretory canal. These results indicate that lectin WGA receptors are located in the tegumental syncytium and lamella of the excretory canal of the metacercariae, and in the lamella of the caecum and excretory canal of the young adult and adult. Therefore, the GlcNAc and NeuNAc regions in the tegumental syncytium appear to be functionally associated with cell-recognition and protection from the immune system of the host, and linked with membrane transport and absorption of nutrients in the lamella of the excretaory canal and caecal epithelia.

  • The effect of different porosity of onggis, Korean earthenware, on the fermentation of kochujang was investigated. The porosity was controlled with glazing treatment. Three kinds of onggis were made: one with no glazing treatment, one with outside glazing treatment, and one with both inside and outside glazing treatment. During 4 month fermentation of kochujang in porosity-controlled earthenwares, physical, chemical, microbiological, and sensory quality attributes were monitored. Higher protease activity and higher contents of amino nitrogen, free amino acids, and total neucleotide were observed in kochujang fermented in the onggi with outside glazing treatment, which might have resulted in better sensory quality. Onggi with medium porosity could be effective for fermentation of kochujang.

  • Mass production of Spodoptera litura nuclear polyhedrosis virus (SINPV) was carried out on massively reared host insects. The yield of SINPV was maximal with $6.7{\;}\times{\;}10^9$ PIBs per larva on the 8th day post inoculation, when 5th instar larvae were inoculated with $1.1{\;}{\times}{\;}10^7$ PIBs per ml, and 2 g of artificial diet was sufficient for food consumption of a larva. The moribund larvae were more suitable for handling and mass production of virus than the completely dead larvae. The larvae, when treated with methoprene ($Manta^{\circledR}$), prolonged their larval period and consequently became bigger to result in higher yield(about 15%) of virus.

  • The tegumental ultrastructure of juvenile and adult Echinostoma cinetorchis (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Three-day (juvenile) and 16-day (adult) worms were harvested from rats (Sprague-Dawley) experimentally fed the metacercariae from the laboratory-infected fresh water snail, Hippeutis cantori. The worms were fifed with 2.5% glutaraldehyde, processed routinely, and observed by an ISI Korea DS-130 scanning electron microscope. The 3-day old juvenile worms were elongated and ventrally curved, with their ventral sucker near the anterior two-fifths of the body. The head crown was bearing 37∼38 collar spines arranged in a zigzag pattern. The lips of the oral and ventral suckers had 8 and 5 type II sensory papillae respectively, and bewteen the spines, a few type III papillae were observed. Tongue or spade-shape spines were distributed anteriorly to the ventral sucker, whereas peg-like spines were distributed posteriorly and became sparse toward the posterior body. The spines of the dorsal surface were similar to those of the ventral surface. The 16-day old adults were leaf-like, and their oral and ventral suckers were located very closely. Aspinous head crown, oral and ventral suckers had type II and type III sensory papillae, and numerous type I papillae were distributed on the tegument anterior to the ventral sucker. Scale-like spines, with broad base and round tip, were distributed densely on the tegument anterior to the ventral sucker but they became sparse posteriorly. At the dorsal surface, spines were observed at times only at the anterior body. The results showed that the tegument of E. cinetorchis is similar to that of other echinostomes, but differs in the number and arrangement of collar spines, shape and distribution of tegumenal spines, and type and distribution of sensory papillae.

  • Since 1966, practical use of active heavy analogs of the hormones has been also worked out as an insecticide and brought the features of it to the light as cocoon producer. On the other hand, it is expected to afford the increase of silk productivity resulted from control of the fifth larval period by delaying normal development. With these regards, some of analogs have been tried to apply practically to the silkworm for an increase of cocoon productivity. One of the synthesized juvenile hormone available is "Manina". And it is presently used for the increase of silk productivity in Korea. For the practical use, it is very essential the varietal differences in the increase of silk productivity by topical application was tested and the obtained results are summarized as follows. 1. It was evident that the fifty larval period was extended by topical application after 48 hrs. of the last ecdysis, ranging from 8 hrs. to one day, as compared to the control. 2. In pupal rates, there is no significance between control and treatments. It proved that there was no toxicity to silkworm by topical application in general, except jam 120. With regards to an increase of cocoon yield in Japanese, it was resulted from 17∼24% of cocoon yield from 10,000 larvae, as compared to that of control. In case of Chinese, the incrasing rates were varied from 15∼26% of cocoon yield, 17.8kg of it with 26% increase for Jam 122 and 16.7kg of it with 25% increase for Jam 118. In case of all hybrids, an increase of the cocoon yield took places from 20% to 31% and the weight of cocoon layer for the Japanese increased by 6 to 14%, those for the Chinese by 4 to 7% and those for the hybrids ranged from 21 to 29% increase. 3. It was recognized that the hybrid vigor rate took places with the hybrids between high responsing parents to juvenile hormones.

  • At the beginning of the Chos$\breve{o}$n dynasty, punch'$\breve{o}$ng began as a simplified form of inlaid celadon, and in the two following centuries it developed into a popular folk craft in various styles and expressive decorations; overtime, it was increasingly made to resemble whiteware, and its production stopped after the Japanese invasion of Korea. In the present study, the body and glaze compositions of punch'$\breve{o}$ng were examined and compared with those of celadon and whiteware, whose compositions have previously been compared with those of Chinese ceramics. Here, the analyzed shards were organized into 28 groups based on their production sites and archaeological characteristics. For each group, the body and glaze compositions of several shards(usually three to five) were obtained, averaged, and compared with those of the other groups. These comparisons showed that the majority of the punch'$\breve{o}$ng bodies were formed, like those of celadon and whiteware, with mica-quartz porcelain stone, which was commonly used in Yuezhou, Jingdezhen, and other southern Chinese kilns. The glazes consisted of clay materials and flux components made from various proportions of wood ash, burnt limestone (glaze ash) and crushed limestone. Overall, the punch'$\breve{o}$ng glazes resembled the Kory$\breve{o}$ celadon and Kory$\breve{o}$ whiteware glazes more closely than the Chos$\breve{o}$n white wareglazes. However, the $TiO_2$ levels found in the tested punch'$\breve{o}$ng were low, similar to those of Chos$\breve{o}$n whiteware; this indicated that glaze stone was used as the clay component of the punch'$\breve{o}$ng glazes, as was the case for Chos$\breve{o}$n whiteware. This study of the material characteristics of punch'$\breve{o}$ng may be used as a comparative framework for analyzing ceramic shards discovered at current and future excavations within Korea.

  • This study is investigated the characteristics and the comparison on blackware and whiteware at Gilmyeong-ri kilns, located Poncheon-si, Geonggi province at AD 19c using scientific analysis. It is measured by scientific analysis classified as microstructure observation, physical methods which involved chromaticity, specific gravity, absorption ratio and porosity, and chemical analysis of components of body and glaze. As a result, a particle and a pore of body surface appeared differently by the degree of vitrification. In glaze, Blackware have better on good vitrification than whiteware in the microstructure observation. The physical characteristics of chromaticity, specific gravity, absorption ratio and porosity differed according to degree of vitrification rather than porcelain types. In composition, body of blackware have higher ratio of $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$ than of whiteware. Also glaze of blackware have higher ratio of $Fe_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$, and lower ratio of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ than whiteware. Especially, blackware have higher ratio in the composition of CaO and $P_2O_5$ by which ash is used or not.
