  • This paper empirically examines the effect of government R&D support on the performance of the firm in Korea. In particular, we examine to what extent the government R&D support affected the firm's exploratative performance. Using a novel dataset combining patent information with national government R&D funding data and firm performance indicators from 2005-2008, we construct and run an empirical model where a firm's exploratative activity, measured by a firm patenting in a different field, is a function of the government R&D support a firm receives. The empirical results show that the government R&D support has a positive effect on the firm's exploratative activity. Especially, this effect is stronger for the small and medium size firms, while large firms are relatively relying on their own R&D funding for exploration. This result indicates that the government needs to focus more on R&D funding for small and medium size firms, if it wants more exploratative outcomes to enhance potential resources for economic development.

  • Feature tracking in video frame sequences has suffered from the instability and the frequent failure of feature matching between two successive frames. In this paper, we propose a robust 2D feature tracking method that is stable to long video sequences. To improve the stability of feature tracking, we predict the spatial movement in the current image frame using the state variables. The predicted current movement is used for the initialization of the search window. By computing the feature similarities in the search window, we refine the current feature positions. Then, the current feature states are updated. This tracking process is repeated for each input frame. To reduce false matches, the outlier rejection stage is also introduced. Experimental results from real video sequences showed that the proposed method performs stable feature tracking for long frame sequences.

  • Conventional case-based reasoning (CBR) does not perform efficiently for high volume dataset because of case-retrieval time. In order to overcome this problem, some previous researches suggest clustering a case-base into several small groups, and retrieve neighbors within a corresponding group to a target case. However, this approach generally produces less accurate predictive performances than the conventional CBR. This paper suggests a new hybrid case-based reasoning method which dynamically composing a searching pool for each target case. This method is applied to diagnose for the heart disease dataset. The results show that the suggested hybrid method produces statistically the same level of predictive performances with using significantly less computational cost than the CBR method and also outperforms the basic clustering-CBR (C-CBR) method.

  • Low-speed impact was localized on a stiffened composite structure, using 4 FBG sensors with 100 kHz-sampling rate interrogator and devised localization algorithm. The composite specimen consists of a main spar and several stringers, and the overall size of the specimen's surface is about $0.8{\times}1.2m$. Pre-stored reference data for 247 grid locations and 36 stiffener locations are gathered and used as comparison target for a random impact signal. The proposed algorithm uses the normalized cross-correlation method to compare the similarities of the two signals; the correlation results for each sensor's signal are multiplied by others, enabling mutual compensation. 20 verification points were successfully localized with a maximum error of 43.4 mm and an average error of 17.0 mm. For the same experimental setup, the performance of the proposed method is evaluated by reducing the number of sensors. It is revealed that the mutual compensation between the sensors is most effective in the case of a two sensor combination. For the sensor combination of FBG #1 and #2, the maximum localization error was 42.5 mm, with average error of 17.4 mm.

  • To isolate a novel gene for antibacterial peptide, an inducible clone(BmInc8) was selected by differential screening strategy from Bombyx mori cDNA library prepared from lavae injected with Escherichia coli. This clone contained a cDNA insert of 564 nucleotides and encoded 59 amino acids with an apparent molecular mass of 6.3 kDa. The cDNA sequence of BmInc8 had 61.2% identity compared to that of the bactericidin from Manduca sexta and also the deduced amino acids sequences from this insert had 65% identity compared to that of the cecropin D peptide Hyalophora cecropia. The transient expression assay of this insert using prokaryotic expression vector system revealed that the expressed peptide displayed the antibacterial activity. The cDNA sequence was deposited in GenBank under the accession number U30289.

  • Focusing on the situation where there are not many actual users of VR / AR, this study, from the viewpoint of technology adoption and use, explores the adoption-and-use process of AR contents that can be easily accessed by using smartphones. As a result, the factors influencing the necessity of AR contents were 'enjoyment' and 'satisfaction', and other factors, such as 'innovativeness', 'the experience of using similar media', and 'the number of AR usage', did not have significant impact on the necessity of AR contents. In addition, as a result of verifying level differences in 'enjoyment', 'satisfaction' and 'necessity' according to the experience of using AR content, only the 'enjoyment' and 'satisfaction' showed that there are differences. In other words, it can be interpreted that the users in their 20s actively use AR content only when they expect to have fun and satisfaction. To sum up, this study can provide an important implication for understanding the tendency of early AR content users' perception and usage behavior.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the ambivalence of adult children to their elderly parents. 410 adult children who married and having alive mother or father were included. First, direct measurement for asking ambivalence was developed and the relationship between direct and indirect measurements of ambivalence was tested. Next, the influences of parental, children, and relational characteristics on ambivalence were examined. Nine items were selected as direct measurement of ambivalence through the exploratory factor analysis and item response theory. The relationship between direct measure and indirect measure was from .543(p<.000) to r=.625(p<.000) based on gender and generation. The effects of indirect ambivalence on conflict was bigger than direct one for both sons and daughters and the influences of direct measurement on intimacy and relational satisfaction were bigger than indirect one. In case of sons, caregiving obligation was the biggest predictor on ambivalence for mothers and value differences was on ambivalence for fathers. For daughters, age of self was the biggest predictor on ambivalence for mothers and age of fathers was the one for fathers. These results were discussed on the meanings of ambivalence for elderly mothers and fathers in Korea comparing with Chinese and Western cultures.
