Spherulitic rhyolite occur as part of ring dyke which showing a vertical flowage of $60^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$, of the Jangsan cauldron was studied. The spherulites range in diameter from a few millimeters to 2.8 centimeters or more, and average 5~10 millimeters. It belongs to radiated simple spherulite type. They consist of a core of moderate brown dense material encased by a thin crust, a few millimeters thick at most of white grey material. The spherulites frequently have a radiating fibrous structure, which are thought to have formed as a consequence of rapid mineral growth caused by very fast cooling of the dykes in shallow depth near the surface. EPMA examination of the concentric-zoned core of spherulites show that they are mainly composed of cryptocrystalline-fibrous intergrowth of silica minerals and alkali feldspars which have $SiO_2$ 82% or more, $Al_2O_3$ 7~10%, $Na_2O+K_2O$ less than 8%. The feldspar compositions of the spherulites lie essentially within the sanidine field. XRD examination show that spherulites are mainly composed of quartz, sanidine, albite with minor mica, kaolinite and chlorite. According to X-ray mapping, the spherulites are enriched in $SiO_2$ in the core and partly enriched $Na_2O$ or $K_2O$, $Al_2O_3$ in the shell that reflect in compositional zoning with increasing spherulitic devitrification. The feathery and non-equant crystal shapes of spherulites from rhyolite dyke of Jangsan cauldron suggest that they may have formed during the rapid cooling of dyke under the static state, or faster velocity of devitrification from glassy materials than movement velocity of the magma intrusion. The spherulitic rhyolite originated from high-silica(75.4~75.7 wt.%) rhyolite magma.
Volcanic rocks related to the Guamsan cadera, which find in the southeastern Cheongsong, are divided into Volcanic breccia, Guamsan Tuff and Post-collapse intrusions. We determined their eruption, intrusion and caldera-forming timings based on SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating. The dating results yield earlier eruption age of $63.77{\pm}0.94Ma$ from the lower ash-flow tuff and an later eruption age of $60.1{\pm}1.8Ma$ from the upper ash-flow tuff of the Guamsam Tuff, and intrusion age of $60.65{\pm}0.95Ma$ from the rhyolite ring dyke of the Post-collapse intrusions. The age data suggest that the Guamsan caldera is formed in 60.65~60.1 Ma between eruption of the upper ash-flow tuff and intrusion of the rhyolite ring dyke. The Guamsan cadera exhibits the volcanic processes of a perfect igneous cycle passing from ash-flow eruptions through caldera collapse to ring intrusions during 63.77~60.1 Ma.
This study reports the results about the petrography of volcanic rocks in Namoo island and Namhyeongje island, off the southern coast of Busan City. The rocks in the Namhyeongje island composed of dacitic crystal-vitric welded tuff, showing phenocrysts of plagioclase, rock fragment with flow structure of elongated and flattened pumice fragments. In thin section it shows pyroclastic texture. The volcanic rocks in Namoo island are mainly dark grey-bluish dacite with phenocrysts of plagioclase and gradually changed to pink-greyish rhyodacite with auto-brecciated. In the northeastern part of the island, the volcanic rocks occurred as aggromerate with a poorly sorted mixture of blocks, lappili and ash and felsic feeder dike intrude the aggromerate. Major element composition of the volcanic rocks in Namhyeongje island and Namoo island are $SiO_2$ 73.6~74.4 wt.% and 65.5~68.3 wt.%, respectively. The volcanic rocks in these island are felsic volcanic rocks.
We investigate the geological history that formed geology and landscapes of the Juwangsan National Park and its surrounding areas. The Juwangsan area is composed of Precambrian gneisses, Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks, Permian to Triassic plutonic rocks, Early Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, Late Mesozoic plutonic and volcanic rocks, Cenozoic Tertiary rhyolites and Quaternary taluses. The Precambrian gneisses and Paleozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Ryeongnam massif occurs as xenolithes and roof-pendents in the Permian to Triassic Yeongdeok and Cheongsong plutonic rocks, which were formed as the Songrim orogeny by magmatic intrusions occurring in a subduction environment under the northeastern and western parts of the area before a continental collision between Sino-Korean and South China lands. The Cheongsong plutonic rocks were intruded by the Late Triassic granodiorite, which include to be metamorphosed as an orthogneiss. The granodiorite includes geosites of orbicular structure and mineral spring. During the Cretaceous, the Gyeongsang Basin and Gyeongsang arc were formed by a subduction of the Izanagi plate below East Asia continent in the southeastern Korean Peninsula. The Gyeongsang Basin was developed to separate into Yeongyang and Cheongsong subbasins, in which deposited Dongwach/Hupyeongdong Formation, Gasongdong/Jeomgok Formation, and Dogyedong/Sagok Formation in turn. There was intercalated by the Daejeonsa Basalt in the upper part of Dogyedong Formation in Juwangsan entrance. During the Late Cretaceous 75~77 Ma, the Bunam granitoid stock, which consists of various lithofacies in southwestern part, was made by a plutonism that was mixing to have an injection of mafic magma into felsic magma. During the latest Cretaceous, the volcanic rocks were made by several volcanisms from ubiquitous andesitic and rhyolitic magmas, and stratigraphically consist of Ipbong Andesite derived from Dalsan, Jipum Volcanics from Jipum, Naeyeonsan Tuff from Cheongha, Juwangsan Tuff from Dalsan, Neogudong Formation and Muposan Tuff. Especially the Juwangsan Tuff includes many beautiful cliffs, cayon, caves and falls because of vertical columnar joints by cooling in the dense welding zone. During the Cenozoic Tertiary, rhyolite intrusions formed lacolith, stocks and dykes in many sites. Especially many rhyolite dykes make a radial Cheongsong dyke swarm, of which spherulitic rhyolite dykes have various floral patterns. During the Quaternary, some taluses have been developed down the cliffs of Jungtaesan lacolith and Muposan Tuff.
This article deal with petrotectonic setting and petrogenesis from petrography and chemical analyses of the Cretaceous volcanic and intrusive rocks in the Cheolwon basin. The volcanic rocks are composed of basalts in Gungpyeong Formation, Geumhaksan Andesite, and rhyolitic rocks (Dongmakgol Tuff, Rhyolite and Jijangbong Tuff), and intrusive rocks, Bojangsan Andesite, granite porphyry and dikes. According to petrochemistry, these rocks represent medium-K to high-K basalt, andesite and rhyolite series that belong to calc-alkaline series, and generally show linear compositional variations of major and trace elements with increase in $SiO_2$ contents, on many Harker diagrams. The incompatible and rare earth elements are characterized by high enrichments than MORB, and gradually high LREE/HREE fractionation and sharp Eu negative anomaly with late strata, on spider diagram and REE pattern. Some trace elements exhibit a continental arc of various volcanic arcs or orogenic suites among destructive plate margins on tectonic discriminant diagrams. These petrochemical data suggest that the basalts may have originated from basaltic calc-alkaline magma of continental arc that produced from a partial melt of upper mantle by supplying some aqueous fluids from a oceanic crust slab under the subduction environment. The andesites and rhyolites may have been evolved from the basaltic magma with fractional crystallization with contamination of some crustal materials. Each volcanic rock may have been respectively erupted from the chamber that differentiated magmas rose sequentially into shallower levels equivalenced at their densities.
The columnar joints in Goheung are developed in three places of Yuju-san area, Palyeong-san and Yongbawi area. Vertical and fan-shaped columnar joints which have maximum width 100 m and maximum heigh 50 m are developed in the Yuju-san area Columnar joints are developed next to the road near the the Yuju-san and along the coast of Jijuk-do. Thick columnar joints of maximum width 1m are developed in the Paryeong-san area. Horizontal columnar joints of maximum width 50 cm at length of polygon side are developed on dyke in the Yongbawi area. The columnar joints show high rate of rectangles and pentagons in the number of polygons. The length of polygon side of columnar joints in study area ranges from 10 to 100 cm, and 20 cm among the range appears in high frequency. Columnar joints are developed vertically to the ground from the cooling surface in Yuju-san and Palyeong-san area. Columnar joints in Yongbawi area are developed vertically to the contact of country rocks. As a result, the columnar joints began cooling from the country rock contact. And columnar joints are developed vertically to contact surface. The rocks in columnar joints is rhyolitic welded tuff in Yuju-san and Palyeong-san area, dacite in Yongbawi area. In the acid volcanic rocks flow structure well developed. The white phenocryst mineral about 2 mm size by eye, is usually feldspar, and includes some quartz. The rate of $SiO_2$ is 70wt.% or more. It is the last stage of differentiation to calc-alkaline series. The columnar joints of the Yuju-san area are expected to be distributed along a band that extends to about 1km east of the stone pit.
The Gyeongsang Arc is the most notable of the Korea Arc that is composed of several volcanic arcs trending to NE-SW direction in the Korean peninsula. The Hayang Group has many volcanogenic interbeds of lava flows by alkaline or calc-alkaline basaltic volcanisms during early Cretaceous. Late Cretaceous calc-alkaline andesitic and rhyolitic volcanisms reconstructed the Gyeongsang Arc that consist of thick volcanic strata on the Hayang Group in The Gyeongsang Basin. The volcanisms characterize first eruptions of basaltic and andesitic lavas with small pyroclastics, and continue later eruptions of dacitic and rhyolitic ash-fall and voluminous ash-flow with some calderas and then domes and dykes. During the Early Cretaceous (about 120 Ma), oblique subduction of the Izanagi plate to NNW from N direction results in sinistral strike-slip faults to open a pull-apart basin in back-arc area of the Gyeongsang Arc, in which erupted lava flows from generation of magma by a decrease in lithostatic pressure. Therefore the Gyeongsang Basin is interpreted into back-arc basin reconstructed by a continental rifting. Arc volcanism began in about 100 Ma with exaggeration of the back-arc basin in the Gyeongsang, and then changed violently to construct volcanic arcs. During the Late Cretaceous (about 90 Ma), orthogonal subduction of the Izanagi plate to NW from NNW direction ceased development of the basin to prolong violent volcanisms.
Cheolwon Group in the Cheolwon Basin, which lies northwest of the Gyeonggi massif, has been correlated to the Yucheon Group in the Gyeongsang Basin, but its ages and volcanic times are defined to be considerately earlier than the other one. In this study, SHRIMP zircon U-Pb ages were determined from the igneous rocks in the Cheolwon Basin. The mean ages from zircons are $115.0{\pm}1.1Ma$ in rhyolite, and $111.24{\pm}0.85Ma$ and $109.1{\pm}1.1Ma$ in granite porphyry. The minimum age is 113 Ma in the Jijangbong Tuff. Such age in the rhyolite define the intrusion time of ring dykes, suggesting a caldera collapse following eruption of the Dongmakgol Tuff. Such age in the Jijangbong Tuff represent latest volcanism as postcaldera in the basin. The volcanic rocks in the basin were erupted during late Aptian, and are correlated to the Sindong Group in the Gyeongsang Basin. The plutonism in the basin occurred during $111.24{\pm}0.85Ma{\sim}109.1{\pm}1.1Ma$, following the volcanism. The age distribution of the analyzed zircons in the Jijangbong Tuff indicates the presence of foreign zircons derived from protoliths, regarding a wide span of zircon ages from Cretaceous to Jurassic, Triassic, early and late Protozoic, and Archean. The Archean age suggests the possible presence of the Archean protoliths with such age, which have not been exposed on the surface. The age distribution with wide span suggests that its vent is located in an area that several strata with different ages piled up and intercepted with some intrusives.
In the eastern part of the Euiseong Basin acidic~intermediate volcanic rocks widely distribute on the Cretaceous sedimentary basement. Coeval granitic rocks and dyke rocks intruded into the volcanic rocks. Volcanic stratigraphy of study area are andesite lava, dacitic lapilli tuff, dacitic flow-banded lava, rhyolitic bedded tuff, rhyolitic massive tuff, dacitic massive lava, rhyolitlc welded tuff occur from the lower to the upper strata. $SiO_2$ content of the volcanic rocks range from 51 to 74 wt.%. With the increase of $SiO_2$, the contents of $TiO_2$, $Al_2$$O_3$, MgO, FeOT MnO, CaO, $P_2$$O_{5}$ decrease but those of $K_2$O increase. The contents of $Na_2$O show dispersive variation. This trend is quite sim-ilar to the major oxide variation in the volcanic rocks from the Yucheon sub-basin. The geochemical natures indicate that the volcanic rocks in the study area are discriminated to the island-arc type high K to medium K calc-alkaline rocks. The compositional variation of the volcanic rocks can be explained by the plagioclase fractionation of the volcanic magmas originated from similar source materials. The volcanic stratigraphy seems to have formed by at least two eruptive sequences of andesitic to rhyolitic and dacitic to rhyolitic magmas which underwent crystallization differentiation.
Sangjogam, located in Goseong, Gyeongsangnam-do, was designated as Natural Monument #411, because of its diverse geological heritage, such as fossils, ripple marks, dykes, and columnar joints. In the area, Byeongpungbawi, with its beautiful columnar joints vertical to the bedding plane of the underlying sedimentary rocks and spectacular coastal view, was named after its overall shape reminiscent of a huge folding screen. The purpose of this study was to investigate the formation process of the columnar joints using the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) method. AMS measurements showed that the k1 and k3 values representative of directions of the long and short axes of a magnetic particle at each point strongly clustered, and the oblate magnetic foliation structure in Byeongpungbawi developed during sill-type intrusion rather than lava flow. In summary, Byeongpungbawi was produced by sill-type intrusion along the bedding plane of the underlying sedimentary layer, and the subsequent formation of columnar joints was accompanied by the cooling and contraction of intruding rhyolite magma. This study potentially provides a basic research tool in understanding the formation mechanism of columnar joints which are widely distributed in southern Korea.
