  • To examine the mechanical and combustion characteristics of FRTP, either polycarbonate or nylon were used as a matrix, and either glass fiber or carbon fiber were used as the fiber reinforcement. The fiber reinforcement content was differentiated at 0~40 wt%. The tensile strength and heat distortion temperature increased with increasing reinforcement content. When the fiber reinforcement content was above 30 wt%, the flammability rating showed V-0. As the fiber reinforcement content increased from 0 to 40 wt%, the peak heat release rate of polycarbonate decreased by approximately 51% and that of nylon decreased by approximately 24%. The rate of CO generation decreased for a period of time, and then increased. This appears to have resulted from incomplete combustion. The rate of CO2 generation shows a similar tendency with the heat release rate. As fiber reinforcement content levels increased from 0 to 40 wt%, the CO2 peak rate of polycarbonate generation decreased by approximately 50% and that of nylon decreased by 28%.

  • Concrete, as a construction material, needs suitable reinforcement for tensile region due to weak tensile strength. Many researches on cement reduction have been attempted for $CO_2$ emissions during cement clinker production. In this paper engineering properties of concrete enhanced with polypropylene fiber (PPF) and rice husk ash (RHA) are evaluated. Fiber volume ratios of 0.125~0.375 and RHA replacement ratio of 0~20% are considered for concrete mixture. Lots of test including compressive, split, flexural and the related crack width, impact energy, and pull out test are performed and the results are evaluated considering the fiber ratios, fiber length and RHA replacement. Fiber and RHA ratios have dominant effects on tensile and compressive characteristics respectively, and the concrete with 0.125% of PPF and 10% of RHA shows the most effective enhancement for engineering properties. Appropriate addition of RHA and PPF are very effective both for engineering property enhancement and clean technology.

  • There is several ways of recycling methods for waste FRP boats. The main one is mechanical recycling that is one of the simple and technically proven methods. It recently has been reported that FRP can be recycled by separating into laminated glass fiber layers instead of crushing into powder. Even though the mechanical recycling is a good way for the eligibility of laminated glass fiber reinforced material, the system should have another option which can collect resin of FRP. Because the resin is still very useful renewable energy source, that cannot be discarded, But FRP is made up of laminated glass fiber(roving cloth layer) which is fire retardant substances and very hard to break into each layer. Due to the high cost of fossil energy the waste plastics should be regenerated to the source of renewable energy. Laminated glass fiber which is recyclable in a very limited way, is currently a serious barrier to waste FRP boat regenerating. This study is to propose a new extracting method which is efficient and environment friendly FRP waste regenerating system. The recycled glass fiber which is obtained by the separation of the roving layer from FRP waste has been found to be useful for concrete(FRC) products or concrete(FRC) structures as fiber reinforced material. And it can be successively applied to renewable energy applications using the waste resins of FRP residue without laminated glass fiber.

  • Cylindrical laminated veneer lumber (LVL) is produced by winding the veneer tape on a circular cylinder. The veneer tape was produced by cutting the veneer into a rectangular shape and sewing it in a vertical direction to the fiber. The tensile strength test was carried out by producing the veneer tape specimen with different species of veneer, types and combinations of sewing yarn. The Radiata pine veneer tape produced with three sewing lines using the reinforced sewing thread had the best tensile strength. Also, the separation and snapping problems of the veneer tape were improved, resulting in the improvement in the workability of cylindrical LVL. The bending strength of various cylindrical LVL produced with different types of veneer tape and a different number of lamination layers and the application of reinforcement with glass fiber cloth was compared with that of Larix log. Bending MOR of cylindrical LVL reinforced with glass fiber cloth at the volume ratio of 11% was improved by 65% in comparison to the non-reinforced cylindrical LVL. In the case of the cylindrical LVL produced with 2 sewing lines of veneer tape, a fracture occurred at the butt joint between the veneer tapes. However, in the case of the cylindrical LVL produced with 3 sewing lines of veneer tape a fracture occurred in the fiber direction.

  • Fiber metal hybrid laminate (FML) can be used as an economic material with superior mechanical properties and light weight than conventional metal by bonding of metal and FRP. However, there are disadvantages that it is difficult to predict fracture behavior because of the large difference in properties depending on the type of fiber and lamination conditions. In this paper, we study the failure behavior of hybrid materials with laminated glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP, GEP118, woven type) in Al6061-T6 alloy. The Al alloys were coated with GFRP 1, 3, and 5 layers, and fracture behavior was analyzed by using a static test and a low cycle fatigue test. In the low cycle fatigue test, strain - life analysis and the total strain energy density method were used to analyze and predict the fatigue life. The Al alloy did not have tensile properties strengthening effect due to the GFRP coating. The fatigue hysteresis geometry followed the behavior of the Al alloy, the base material, regardless of the GFRP coating and number of coatings. As a result of the low cycle fatigue test, the fatigue strength was increased by the coating of GFRP, but it did not increase proportionally with the number of GFRP layers.

  • The mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was evaluated for CFRP laminates with different types of nonwoven tissues and the source of increased mode II interlaminar fracture toughness was examined by SEM analysis in this paper. The interlaminar fracture toughness in mode II is obtained by an end notched flexure test. The experiment is performed using three types of non-woven tissues: 8 $g/m^2$ of carbon tissue, 10 $g/m^2$ of glass tissue, and 8 $g/m^2$ of polyester tissue. On the basis of the specimen with no non-woven tissue, interlaminar fracture toughness on mode II at specimens inserted with non-woven carbon and glass tissues and polyester tissues increases as much as 166.5% and 137.1% and 157.4% respectively. The results show that mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of CFRP laminates inserted with nonwoven tissues increased due to the fiber bridging, fiber breakage, and hackle etc. by SEM analysis.

  • Fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) is applied to fabricate the main structures of composite boats. Most of them are made from molds. These products deform after releasing from the mold and they also deform in high temperature environment. Therefore, experimental investigation and evaluation of deformation of laminated composite structures under various manufacturing and working conditions are necessary. The specimens of L-shape and curveshape were made from unsaturated polyester resin and fiberglass material. Input factors (independent variables) are percentage of hardener and manufacturing temperature and four levels of working temperature and output factor is the deformation which is measured on these specimens. From the results, it was observed that the higher the hardener rate and temperature, the lower the deformation. When the working temperature increased, the specimens showed great variations for the initial deformation values. Besides, the values of deformation or input factors could be predicted by regression equations.

  • The absorbing structure composed of multi-layered fiber reinforced composite materials was designed and microwave absorbing properties are investigated. On the basis of transmission line theory, the theoretical equations to predict the reflection loss and the appropriate composite material for each functional layer are suggested. The most significant result of this study is the successful design and fabrication of triple-layered composite laminates which has the superior microwave absorbing porperties (more than 10 dB in 4∼12 GHz range), without using the ferrite filler in the impedance transforming layer. In the two-layered composite laminate (absorber/substrate), however, the use of ferrite filler (about 40 wt %) in the absorbing layer is necessary to obtain the certain level of microwave absorbance. By combining the glass-fiber composite with ferrite filler and carbon-fiber composite substrate, the microwave absorbing properties more than 10 dB in 4∼12 GHz frequencies than be obtained.

  • The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of material characteristic and design on to the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding characteristics. Basalt glass fiber reinforced composite specimens with stainless fiber conductive filler were manufactured to perform the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness(SE) experiments. In order to reflection and absorb the specimen in electromagnetic fields, flanged coaxial transmission line sample holder was fabricated according to ASTM D 4935-89. Electromagnetic shielding effectiveness(EMSE) was measured quantitatively to examine the electromagnetic shielding characteristics of designed specimens. The result of EMI shielding experiments showed that maximum EMSE value of sandwich type specimens with GSG(basalt glass fiber/stainless fiber/basalt glass fiber) and SGS(stainless fiber/basalt glass fiber/stainless fiber) were 65dB and 80dB at a frequency of 1,500MHz, respectively.

  • The tensile and dielctric strength of the epoxied resin with bi-directional woven glass fibers with a laminate of two layers(G-10) are studied, and the test parameter is the angle between fiber orientation and the tensile axis. The obtained results may be summaried as follows: 1) when the angle between fiber orientation and tensile axis was varied from 0$^{\circ}$ to 45$^{\circ}$ the yield and fracture stresses have a tendency to decrease with increase in the angle. Especially, the decrease rates in the yield and fracture stresses are changed remarkably in the range of 0$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$. 2) The fracture strain has showed the maximum value when the angle between fiber orientation and tensile axis is 45$^{\circ}$, and showed the rapid rate of change from 15$^{\circ}$ to 45$^{\circ}$. 3) For the sample with same angle between fiber orientation and tensile axis the maximum dielectric strength under compressive stress is decreased with increase in tensile stress, when the compressive stress is increased as a parameter of tensile stress. 4) When the angle between fiber orientation and tensile axis is 45$^{\circ}$, the dielectric strength showed the worst value, as the mechanical strength did.
