  • In order to development of a new wall structure type thermal diode for energy saving, the numerical studies have been performed for natural convection across an rectangular enclosure with the various lengthes of the heat source and sink plate. The governing equations for the two-dimensional, laminar, natural convection process in an enclosure are discretized by the control volume approach which insures the conservative characteristics to be satisfied in the calculation domain, and solved by a elliptic SIMPLE algorithm. The momentum and energy equations are coupled through the buoyancy term.

  • Present study is concerned with an experimental study on the cooling characteristics of heat-generating components arranged in channels which are made by printed circuit boards. To estimate the thermal performance of the heat-generating components arranged by $5\times11$ in channel flow, three variables are used: the inlet velocity, the height of channel, and row number of the component. The cooling characteristics of the heat-generating components such as the surface temperature rise, the adiabatic temperature rise, the adiabatic heat transfer coefficient, and the effect of thermal wake are compared with the result of the experiment and the numerical analysis. The experimental result is in a good agreement with the numerical analysis. The heat transfer coefficient increases as the Reynolds number increases, while the thermal wake function calculated for each row decreases as the Reynolds number increases. In addition, it is found that Nu-Re correlation equation is Identical to the previous studies, and the empirical correlation equation between the thermal wake function and Re is presented.

  • Seawater amounts to 70% of the earth and represents a quite unlimited resource for the production of fresh water by desalination processes and for the extraction of dissolved salts present in it. Recently, the falling film evaporation has increased in interest as an efficient method for seawater desalination system. In the desalination system, the flow characteristics of the falling film is very important issue to make highly efficient system. So, this study is taken to investigate numerically the falling film thickness on the inlet Renold Number ranges are 400 to 700. Numerical simulations are performed using FLUENT6.3.26, a commercial CFD code.

  • In this study, waves2Foam implemented in OpenFOAM is used to simulate numerically the wave pressure on a verical caisson under the condition of with and without the placement of Tetrapods in front of the caisson. The comparisons of the numerical results and the experimental data show fairly good agreement between them. Based on this, it is possible to suggest an optimal combination of coefficients for an empirical formula to represent the protective TTP layer as porous media.

  • This paper considered the structural mechanism of transitional boundary layer by the experimental approach. In order to measure the turbulence quantity in the boundary layer, we made a wind tunnel with 400${\times}$190${\times}$2500 mm test section and a flat plate with well fabricated leading edge. Hot wire anemometer was used for acquiring the continuous turbulence signal which is processed by special software. The results of experiment show that the region where turbulence spot is dominant moves from near wall to overall layer and thus the anisotropy of velocity fluctuation shows so large value. Also the turbulence energy originally contained in low frequency band comes up to the high frequency band. Finally the turbulence model needs minimum two length scales to consider the pre-transition region.

  • Cavitation causes a great deal of noise, damage to components, vibrations, and a loss of efficiency in devices, such as propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. Thus, the cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems. In the present work, a two-phase flow solver based on the homogeneous mixture model has been developed. The solver employs an implicit preconditioning, dual time stepping algorithm in curvilinear coordinates. The flow characteristics around Clark-Y hydrofoil were calculated and then validated by comparing with the experimental data. The lift and drag coefficients with changes of angle of attack and cavitation number were obtained. The results show that cavity length and lift, drag coefficient increase with increasing angle of attack.

  • The influence of unsteady wake on the flow and heat transfer characteristics in a four-vane linear cascade was experimentally investigated. The unsteady wake was generated with four rotating rectangular plates located upstream of the cascade. Tested inlet Reynolds number based on chord length was set to 66,000 by controlling free-stream velocity. A hot-wire anemometer system was employed to measure turbulent velocity components. For the convective heat transfer coefficients measurement on turbine blade surface, thermochromic liquid crystal and gold film Intrex were used. It was found that the unsteady wake enhances the turbulent motion in the cascade passage and accordingly promotes the development and transition of boundary layer. It was found that the heat transfer coefficients on the blade surface increase as the plate rotating speed increases. However, the increasing of heat transfer coefficients is not significant in the case that Strouhal number is higher than 0.503.

  • The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the equations of the k-.epsilon. turbulence model are solved numerically in a general curvilinear system for a three-dimensional turbulent flow around an Ahmed body. The simulation is especially aimed at the evaluation of three finite differencing schemes for the convection term, which include the upwind differencing scheme(UDS), the second order upwind differencing scheme(SOU scheme) and the QUICK scheme. The drag coefficient, the velocity and pressure fields are found to be changed considerably with the adopted finite differencing schemes. It is clearly demonstrated that the large difference between computation and experiment in the drag coefficient is due to relatively high predicted values of pressure drag from both front part and vertical rear end base. The results also show that the simulation with the QUICK or SOU scheme predicts fairly well the flow field and gives more accurate drag coefficient than other finite differencing scheme.

  • Internal flow characteristics within Y-jet atomizers and the local drop size distribution and cross-sectional averaged drop size at the outside were investigated with the liquid and air injection pressures, mixing port length of atomizers, and the liquid properties taken as parameters. To examine the effect of the liquid viscosity, glycerin-water mixtures were used in this study. The liquid viscosity plays only a minor role in determining the internal flow pattern and the spatial distribution shape of drops, but the drop sizes themselves generally increase with increasing of the liquid viscosity. An empirical correlation for the liquid discharge coefficient at the liquid port was deduced from the experimental results; the liquid discharge coefficient strongly depends on the liquid flow area at the mixing point which is proportional to the local volumetric quality(.betha.$_{Y}$), and the volumetric quality was included in the correlation. Regardless of the value of the liquid viscosity, the compressible flow through the gas port was well represented by the polytropic expansion process(k=1.2), and the mixing point pressure could be simply correlated to the aspect ratio( $l_{m}$/ $d_{m}$) of the mixing port and the air/liquid mass flow rate ratio( $W_{g}$/ $W_{f}$) as reported in the previous study.udy.udy.y.

  • The characteristics of air flow and engine performance with swirl ratio variance of intake port In a turbocharged DI diesel engine was studied in this paper. The intake port flow is important factor which have influence on the engine performance and exhaust emission because the properties in the injected fuel depend on the combustion characteristics. The swirl ratio for ports was modified by hand-working and measured by impulse swirl meter. For the effects on performance and emission, the brake torque and brake specific fuel consumption were measured by engine dynamometer and NOx, smoke were measured by gas analyzer and smoke meter. As a result of steady flow test, when the valve eccentricity ratio are closed to cylinder wall, the flow coefficient and swirl intensity are increased. And as the swirl ratio is increased, the mean flow coefficient is decreasing, whereas the gulf factor is increasing. Also, through engine test its can be expected to meet performance and emission by optimizing the main parameters; the swirl ratio of intake port, injection timing and compression ratio.
