  • In cavity flow, the rectangular step generates so strong sound that many researchers have investigated method to suppress the nois during interaction between vortical flow and rectangular forward step. In this study the flow noise from the vortex motion in two-dimentional low Mach number flow past a forward step with various chamfering angle is calculated numerically. Inviscid incompressible discrete vortex model and matched asymptotic expansion(MAE) theory are applied to obtain the inner flow field and the outer noise field. Both source acoustic pressure and sound intensity are obtained with various chamfering height, chamfering angle and initial vortex position. The pressure amplitude is most suppressed when the chamfering angle is between $15^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circC}$ at the chamfering length of 30% of the step height.

  • The noise itself that affects the sensor array is defined as the noise which happens in the place where the system is installed and the circumference noise which comes from the ocean. The array structure for detecting acoustic signal in the underwater effected turbulent layer flow noise. In this paper to design the conformal array spectral density function was introduced and several cases of flow induced noise which affect transfer function were simulated. Modified Corcos wall pressure model was used as turbulent boundary layer flow noise. The effect of noise has been reduced as integrated sum of transfer function has been reduced by decreasing elastomer thickness and density when kx is in low wave number area. Also the characteristics of transfer function by Corcos wall pressure displayed the product of frequency density function. This simulation results can be applied to the conformal array design in unmmaned underwater vehicle in the near future.

  • This paper presents the analytical method for predicting turbulence- induced noise in the multilayered cylinder composed of an outer hose, an inner fluid and an internal core. It is assumed that an infinite axisymmetric cylinder is located horizontally in water with free stream velocity and the turbulent boundary layer (TBL) surrounding the outer hose is fully developed and homogeneous. The transfer function at the core surface due to the propagation of the pressure fluctuation within the TBL is formulated using the linearized Navier-Stockes equation for solid and fluid. In the estimation of the energy spectrum of wall pressure fluctuation, the empirical formula proposed by Strawderman based on the Corcos model is used. A general algorithm for the calculation of the pressure level at the surface of a core, that is, turbulence- induced noise, is presented. Through the detailed numerical simulation, it is found that the major noise mechanism is the propagation of the bulge wave along hose.

  • Turbulent boundary layer noise is already a significant contributor to sonar self noise. For developing acoustic window of sonar system to reduce self noise, a parametric study of design factors of acoustic window is presented. Distance of sensor array from acoustic window, material and damping layer are studied as design factors to influence in the characteristics of the transfer function of self noise. As the result these design factors make change the characteristics of transfer function slightly. Among design factors the location of sensor array is most important parameter in the self noise reduction.

  • Measurements of fluctuating wall pressures were made with a linear array of 16 piezo-electric transducers beneath a fully-developed turbulent boundary layer. The piezoelectric bimorph actuator applied in this experiment has bonding structures of each polarity to make out-of-plane displacements rather than in-plane ones by using piezoelectric effect To specify the boundary layer characteristics at the location where the actuation was applied, the wall friction coefficients and $Re_\theta$ were measured by using the CPM method. The actuating frequency for the bimorph film was determined according to the priori bursting frequency from boundary layer parameters. The reduction of convecting energies in wave-number space was clearly observed at the specified actuating frequencies.

  • When a ship propeller having wing type sections rotates at high speed underwater, local pressure on the blade decreases and various types of the cavitation inevitably occur where the local pressure falls below the vapor pressure. Fundamentally characteristics of the cavitation are determined by the shapes of the blade section and their operating conditions. Underwater noise radiated from a ship propeller is directly connected to the occurrence of the cavitation. In order to design low noise propeller, it is preferentially demanded to figure out key features: how the cavity is generated, developed and collapsed and how the effect of viscosity works in the process. In this study, we first perform inviscid analysis of the partial cavity generated on two dimensional hydrofoil. Secondly, viscous analysis using FLUENT with different turbulence and cavitation models are presented. Results from both approaches are also compared and estimated.

  • The thickness, loading, and broadband noise generated from the trailing edge of the UH-1H main rotor are numerically compared each other. The Kocureck and Tangler's prescribed wake model is adopted to represent the wake geometry during the hovering motion. Three tip Mach numbers of $M_{T}$ = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8, are selected to analyze the effects of different tip Mach numbers. At $M_{T}$ = 0.8, in considering the A-weighting and audible frequency band, the random noise is smaller than the tonal noises such as the thickness and the loading noise which have the low frequency characteristics. Especially most of the random noise frequency spread on the ultrasound region. On the other hand, below $M_{T}$ = 0.4, the band of random noise moves to the audible frequency region, and the random noise becomes larger than the tonal noise. It turns out that the random noise analysis of the rotor should be necessary at low speed operating condition.

  • In recent years, experimental and theoretical studies show that turbulent flows looking disordered have a definite structure produced repetitively with visible order. As a core structure of turbulence, hairpin vertices are believed to play a major role in developing and sustaining the turbulence process in the near wall region of turbulent boundary layers and may be regarded as the simplest conceptual model that can account for the essential features of the wall pressure fluctuations. In this work, fully developed typical hairpin vortices are focused and the associated surface pressure distributions and their corresponding spectra are estimated. On the basis of the attached eddy model, the overall surface pressure spectra are represented in terms of the eddy size distribution. The model is validated by comparison of predicted wavenumber spectra with existing empirical models, the results of direct numerical simulation (DNS) and also spatial correlations with experimental measurements.

  • The outermost SG tubes have more structural problems than inside tubes. Many studies have used a uniform added mass coefficient for all of the SG tubes during the FIV analysis. The purpose of this study is to find out the added mass coefficients for each tube in a cylindrical shell. When a number of tubes are increased, added mass coefficients are also increased. And added mass coefficients at outermost tubes are less than those of inside tubes. According to gap changes between outermost tube and cylindrical shell, added mass coefficients are decreased with increasing the gap. When the gap has very large value, it shows that the added mass coefficient is asymptotically converged to the value of the tube array in a free fluid field.
