  • Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent channel flow for which the drag is reduced by using polymer additives have been performed by a pseudo-spectral method. The Reynolds number based on the friction velocity and half-channel height is 395, and the polymeric stresses due to the polymer additives are evaluated using the FENE-P (finitely extensible nonlinear elastic-Peterlin) model. The numerical results show that the drag reduction rate is significantly affected by the parameters used in the FENE-P model, such as the maximum extensibility and relaxation time of the polymer molecules. The turbulence data for both low- and high-drag reduction regimes are analyzed. In addition, the effects of FENE-P model parameters on the flow characteristics have been investigated for the same drag reduction rate due to the polymer additives. Finally, the present DNS results have been used to verify the correlation between rheological parameters and the extent of drag reduction, which was suggested by Li et al. (2006).

  • In this study, MODFLOW model is used to analyze the groundwater flow system of Seoguipo area in Cheju island, The final parameters of permeability coefficient and storage coefficient of target area can be obtained by trial and error method using the measured data of pumping rate as initial values. And it is found that the applicability for groundwater flow system is reflected well from the simulation result of the model. Seoguipo area spring water is thought to appear by relatively stable groundwater recharge below EL. 400m according to head distribution through the analysis of observed data considering topographic and geological characteristics, Lee's study(996), and the simulation result. Also it is known that point II, III, and VI show relatively large velocity vectors, and groundwater flows through the movement path which is distributed in various directions of I, II, III, IV, V, VI, and VIl form the result of velocity vector analysis using head distribution result values to analyze the groundwater flow path under unsteady flow condition.dition.

  • The paper analyzes factors to affect pedestrian volumes by land-use type using 2012 Seoul Pedestrian Survey. First of all, five groups were classified based on land-use types around survey points such as residential, commercial, industrial and green uses, using k-average cluster analysis. Then, differences in average pedestrian volumes by group were compared for a day and time of day. In addition, multiple regression analysis was employed to identify factors to affect pedestrian volumes, considering physical features, land use types, public transportation accessibility, and socio-economic indices as independent variables by spatial hierarchy. Model results show that the walkway width positively influenced on pedestrian volumes for all groups, whereas other variables differently affected by group. Our results can be used as basic data for establishing polices with respect to pedestrian road design and improvement as well as estimating pedestrian demand by land-use type.

  • Effects of injector position and momentum flux ratio on a vertical jet in a cross flow field were studied qualitatively and shown by using air and water. The experiment was carried out by fixing the momentum flux ratio and varying the position of the injector hole. Conversely, the injector hole position was fixed and the momentum flux ratio was varied. Image visualization was performed by a Shadowgraph technique using a high speed camera. The visualized images were compared for finding differences in spraying through Density Gradient Magnitude Image. It is observed that as the x/d of the apparatus increased the jet break up height decreases and the spray angle also decreases. When x/d is 0, the spray reaches the floor and ceiling at any momentum flux ratio.

  • Phase holdup characteristics of relatively large and small bubbles were investigated in a three-phase(gasliquid-solid) fluidized bed of which diameter was 0.105 m(ID) and 2.5 m in height, respectively. Effects of gas(0.01~0.07 m/s) and liquid velocities(0.01~0.07 m/s) and particle size($0.5{\sim}3.0{\times}10^{-3}m$) on the holdups of relatively large and small bubbles were determined. The holdups of two kinds of bubbles in three phase fluidized beds were estimated by means of static pressure drop method with the knowledge of pressure drops corresponding to each kind of bubble, respectively, which were obtained by dynamic gas disengagement method. Dried and filtered air which was regulated by gas regulator, tap water and glass bead of which density was $2500kg/m^3$ were served as a gas, a liquid and a fluidized solid phase, respectively. The two kinds of bubbles in three-phase fluidized beds, relatively large and small bubbles, were effectively detected and distinguished by measuring the pressure drop variation after stopping the gas and liquid flow into the column as a step function: The increase slope of pressure drop with a variation of elapsed time was quite different from each other. It was found that the holdup of relatively large bubbles increased with increasing gas velocity but decreased with liquid velocity. However, the holdup showed a local minimum with a variation of size of fluidized solid particles. The holdup of relatively small bubbles increased with an increase in the gas velocity or solid particle size, while it decreased slightly with an increase in the liquid velocity. The holdups of two kinds of bubbles were well correlated in terms of operating variables within this experimental conditions, respectively.

  • DME(Dimethyl ether) is the one of the massive energy sources synthesized from natural gas. KOGAS has already developed the commercial-scale production plant of DME and has been doing to obtain overseas resources to meet the domestic needs. This paper presents the DME storage tank design criteria by stress and strain analysis, and the experimental study on the evaporation phenomena of DME by thermal intake and physical rolling movement of DME FPSO or cargo vessel, because the various moving motions along with heat intake cause the evaporation of low temperature liquid. The experimental result shows that the evaporation rate was increased with larger rolling degree and higher liquid level. The rolling motion leads to evaporate about 20% increase with 15 degree rolling based on the evaporation quantity without rolling.

  • The MODFLOW simulated results with varying input parameter values were compared and analyzed. To understand the relative importance of the input parameters, sensitivity analysis was carried out. The amount of sustainable yield was analyzed with respect to the hydraulic conductivity, specific yield, specific storage, aquifer thickness and the distance of the wells from the river. The results of sensitivity analysis showed that inflow from the river and the aquifer storage were sensitive to the specific yield and aquifer thickness. Sustainable yield was sensitive to the hydraulic conductivity and aquifer thickness. The results of this study can be used as a basic information for groundwater development and management plannings considering regional characteristics.

  • This research studied a scaling analysis for the selection of proper heat generation at tube for 1/4-scale storage vaults. First of all, the temperature field and velocity distribution of an original scale storage vault were analyzed and then numerical analysis of a 1/4-scale storage vault was performed to compare each model. The proper heat generation for a 1/4-scale storage vault, at which the temperature and velocity field of a 1/4-scale storage vault showed the best agreement with that of the original storage vault, was evaluated with proposed dimensionless parameters. The behavior of temperature and velocity of fluid in the 1/4-scale case were most similar to those of the original scale, using a heat flux 1.3 times higher than that seen in the original scale, which was approximately 190 W.

  • To develop a chemical-looping combustion technology, conceptual design of 50 kW thermal chemical-looping combustor, which is composed of two interconnected pressurized circulating fluidized beds, was performed by means of mass and energy balance calculations. A riser type fast fluidized bed was selected as an oxidizer and a bubbling fluidized bed was selected as a reducer by mass balance for the chemical-looping combustor. Calculated values of bed mass, solid circulation flux, and reactor dimension by mass and energy balance calculations were suitable for construction and operation of chemical-looping combustor. It is concluded from the comparison of the design results and operating values of commercial circulating fluidized bed that the process outline is realistic. Moreover, the previous results support that oxygen carrier particle, NiO/bentonite, fulfills the conversion rates needed for the proposed design. The effects of system capacity, metal oxide content in a oxygen carrier particle, amount of steam input, gas velocity, and solid depth on design values were investigated and the changes in the system performance can be estimated by proposed design tool.
