  • To improve the physico-chemical properties of sandy alluvial soils for paddy rice, several soil amendments such as wollastonite, dolomite adding red earth and compost were applied compositely. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The application of soil amendments caused an increase of calcium, magnesium and silica contents in the soils, and it was also possible to maintain a high pH during the cropping season. 2. Among the mineral elements in the plant, calcium and silica content were increased by the treatment of adding red earth, dolomite and wollastonite. 3. By the application of wallastonite and dolomite, the phosphorous content in the plant decreased in comparison with no-amendment treatment, and the potash in the plant also decreased after the ear formation stage of the rice. 4. The most desirable treatment (adding red earth+dolomite+extra N) resulted in 19% increase of rice yield, while the composite of wollastonite and compost brought 10% yield increase. The high ripeding ratio was the factor which influenced the yield favorably.

  • Utilization of organic by-product fertilizers has many beneficial effects on agricultural activities and in aspects of the disposal of enormous amounts of livestock manure. Most of these beneficial effects are related to the improvement of soil condition, such as fertility status and physicochemical quality of soil. But, appropriate indexes are needed to effectively manage the quality of organic by-product fertilizers amended on soil. To find chemical and physical standard to control the compost quality, the changes in chemical and physical characteristics of organic by-product fertilizers during composting were investigated, and also an appropriate physical method for this end. The results showed chemical properties, such as humic acid content, OM/N ratio, cation exchange capacity and salt content, had significant relationships during the composting. The water content, particle and bulk densities, particle size and color indices, as physical properties, were also applicable factors for the quality control of compost.

  • Objective of this experiment was to evaluate efficiency of application of biochar pellet in case of application of soil carbon sequestration technology. The treatments were consisted of control as general agricultural practice method, pellet(100% pig compost), biochar pellets with mixture ratio of pig compost(9:1, 8:2, 6:4, 4:6, 2:8) for comparatives of pH, EC, $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ concentrations, and yields in the nursery bed applied biochar pellets after lettuce harvesting. The application rates of biochar pellet was 6.6g/pot regardless of their mixed rates based on recommended amount of application (330kg/10a) for lettuce cultivation. pH in the nursery bed applied different biochar pellets after lettuce harvesting was only increased in the treatment plot of pig compost pellet application, but decreased in 4:6 and 2:8 pellet application plots. However, EC was observed to be not significantly different among the treatments. $NH_4-N$ concentration was only increased in the treatment plot of pig compost pellet application, but $NO_3-N$ concentrations were decreased as compared to the control. Yields in the treatments of 9:1, 8:2 and 4:6 biochar pellet application plot were increased from 9.5% to 11.4%. Therefore, this biochar pellet application might be useful for soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas mitigation in the agricultural farming practices because it was appeared to be a positive effect on lettuce growth.

  • In order to reduce salt(as NaCl) contents in food waste and to improve the quality of discharged wastewater produced during the recycling process of food waste for the purpose of compost and feed stuff, a salt reduction process by added water into food waste was developed. The pilot plant with a rotary type salt reduction equipment to manage continuously 0.5 ton food waste per hour was constructed and the efficiency was tested. The amount of added water was calculated by the water content and the efficiency of dewatering process of food waste. Approximately 0.8 liter water per a kilogram of food waste was injected into the reactor in which food waste was pouring simultaneously, then diluted/mixed in a rotary reactor. About 1.1 liter of leachate including added water was generated, but the leachate contained a very high content of organic particles, so most particles were recovered by two step solid-liquid separation process. The first step was a gravitational filtering process using screens with a pore diameter of 1mm, and the second separation process was centrifugal process. Organic quality of food waste which had been desalted was maintained by inputting the entirely recovered organic particles. The efficiency of salt reduction of food waste was estimated by measuring a chloride anion by titration and salinity by a probe. The results by the two different measuring methods were always over 50%, and the quality of final wastewater was improved up to $200mg/{\ell}$ as TS(total solid) by an additional settling process after the two step solid-liquid separation process.

  • This study was performed to obtain the basic data on current situations and challengeable aspects of vermicomposting industries in Korea and to develope foodwaste treatment technology using earthworm. Pre-treatment process of food waste consists of cleaning, grinding, mixing and others, and salinity of food waste was 0.7% on average, thus not suitable for feed of worms. When applying wash water and going through the cleaning process, however, salinity was dropped to 0.38%, indicating that cleaning process applying wash water is necessary to control the proper salinity for growth of worms. In the food waste processing experiment applying worms, it has been presented that smaller particles induce higher processing efficiency. As a result, food waste processing by worms is possible through maintaining the suitable environment for survival of worms from input process to generation of cast. Cast generated after processing food waste was proved to be most suitable for product standard of compost thus cast is presented to be recycled after processing the food waste applying the worms.

  • Field experiment was carried out to obtain the basic information on the soil improvement with different improved methods on job's tears yield and soil properties in the newly-reclaimed land from 1985 to 1988. Job's tears yield, soil properties and annual changes of soil were investigated and analyzed. Soil bulk density and hardness of topsoil decreased from 1st year to 3rd year, but those increased in 4th year. Soil pH of topsoil had no differences in different soil depths and cultivated years. Average yield of job's tears in the integrated improvement plot was 2.16ton/ha. That was increased by 49% than the control plot. Crop yield was greatest in order of integrated improvement>subsoiling>phosphate>lime>compost>control plot. Correlation coefficients of job's tears yield with soil pH and organic matter content were higher significantly. Also those of subsoil were higher than topsoil. Ratios of annual changes of soil bulk density and hardness showed significant highly with job's tears yield. Also that soil pH was significant at 5 % level in the topsoil.

  • In order to use the glutamic acid fermentation residuum in agriculture effectively, comparison experiments of the residua liquid and dried solid, and compost on radish (Raphanus Sativus) and chinese cabbage (Brassica chinesis) were carried out, together with an investigation on some physical property changes of soil brought about by the use of the residua and compost. 1. An equal or somewhat superior effect of the glutamic acid fermentation residua solid and liquid, to urea was observed. 2. Both residua liquid and dried solid, tended to acidify soil and the tendency was observed to be somewhat servere in the latter. 3. The liquid fermentation residuum compounded with minor elements such as iron, manganese, zinc, copper and boron increased the yield of chinese cabbage compared with the liquid residuum alone. 4. Not only as a N, K fertilizer, the liquid residuum of glutamic acid fermentation could also be used as a source for liquid or solid compound fertilizer.

  • Bacillus species were isolated from swine manure to develope the microbial additive suitable for the rapid com-posting. The 3 of 4 isolated strains were identified as Bacillus cereus KD-2, B. pumilus KD-3, and B. licheni-formis KD-4. Bacillus sp. KD-1 was, however, not highly identical with any Bacillus sp. The isolated strains were analyzed their growth rates, enzyme activities, and antibacterial activities. The maximum growth tem-peratures of KD-1, KD-2, KD-3 and KD-4 were $45^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$, $53^{\circ}C$, and $55^{\circ}C$, respectively. The activities of pro-tease or amylase in mixed culture of 4 strains were similar in the range of $37^{\circ}C$ to $53^{\circ}C$ and activities of lipase in the range of $37^{\circ}C$ to $42^{\circ}C$ were twice higher than those of lipase in the range of $47^{\circ}C$ to $53^{\circ}C$. The antibacterial activity of KD-l, KD-2, or KD-3 against each other was not detected. That of KD-4 against KD-1, KD-2, or KD-3 was, however, detected. The organic compound and C/N ratio of compost fermented by the mixed culture were determined as 61.9% and 22.4%, respectively. The concentration of the ammonia gas was 12.35 mg/l in the liquid compost.

  • Objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effect on pepper growth to application of biochar pellet in case of development of soil carbon sequestration technology. The treatments consisted of control as a general agricultural practice method, pellet (100% pig compost), biochar pellets with mixture ratio of pig compost (9:1, 8:2, 6:4, 4:6, 2:8) for comparison of total carbon contents, $NH_4-N$ concentrations, and total biomass in the pots applied with biochar pellets after pepper harvesting. The application rates of biochar pellet was 8.8 g/pot regardless of their mixed rates based on recommended amount of application (440 kg/10a) for pepper cultivation. For the experimental results, Total carbon contents in the treatments were low from 1.8 to 2.6 fold as compared to the control. $NH_4-N$ concentrations were not significantly different among the treatment plots as compared to the control, but $NO_3-N$ was not detected in the all treatment plots. However, total biomass was not only significantly different between the control and 2:8 (biochar : pig compost) biochar pellet application plot even if the other treatments were low. Therefore, this biochar pellet application might be further modified for soil carbon sequestration in agricultural farming practices.
