Antiproliferative Effect and Apoptotic Induction of Bauhinia forficata Extract in Human Cancer Cells. (Bauhinia forficata 추출물의 인체 암세포에 대한 성장억제 및 세포사멸 유도 활성)

  • Pata de Vaca (Bauhinia forficata) Is a tree which grows naturally in the rainforests and tropical parts of Peru and Brazil, as well as tropical zones of Asia, eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina. The active fraction (Pata-50) of the 70% ethanol extract from Pata de Vaca was sequentially fractionated by HP-20 Diaion column chromatography and C-18 column chromatography, and its characteristics were investigated. The growth of all cancer cells tested except for MCF-7 was Inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner by Pata-50. Its IC50 values were estimated to be 40.4 μg/m on AGS, 51.3 μg/m on HT-29, 52.1μg/m on HepG2, 65.2μg/m on A549, and 77.5μg/m on HeLa cells. A flow cytometric analysis of HepG2 cells revealed induction of apoptosis, but cell cycle regulation was not affected. The HepG2 cell population of apoptosis region increased In a concentration-dependent manner by Pata-50.

A study on rock mass classification in the design of tunnel using multivariate discriminant analysis (다변량 판별분석을 통한 터널 설계시의 암반분류 연구)

  • In designing a tunnel, RMR has been widely used to classify rock mass and to decide the support pattern according to the class of rock mass. However, this RMS system can't help relying on the empirical judgment of engineers who use variables which can be obtained only through consideration of the site conditions. In actuality, it is impossible to consider all the rating factors of RMS when using RMR system at the stage of designing. Therefore, in order to confirm possibility of RMR by use of only the quantitative factors for designing, this paper has done discriminant analysis. Rock strength or RQD has high coefficient of correlation with RMR value, and in consideration of the existing standards for rock mass classification, rock intensity and RQD are important factors for classification of rock mass. Through rock mass classification by the existing RMR system and rock mass classification by the discriminant analysis which has considered two variables only, the discriminant analysis using the rock intensity as an independent variable has shown 74.8% accuracy while the discriminant analysis using RQD as an independent variable has shown 74.3% accuracy. In case of the discriminant analysis which has considered both rock intensity and RQD, it has shown 82.5% accuracy. The existing cases have shown 40.3% accuracy at the stage of designing in which all the RMR factors are considered. It means that at the stage of designing, RMR system can work only with the rock intensity and RQD.

Preparation of SiO2TiO2 Porous Composite Pigments Using a Pickering Emulsion Method as Template (피커링 에멀젼을 형판으로 하는 SiO2TiO2 다공성 분체의 제조)

  • It has been known that small solid particles act as a stabilizer in pickering emulsion system. In this study, we successfully prepared stable pickering emulsion in n-hexylalcohol and water system with TiO2 whose surface was treated by alkylsilane. The optimum condition to prepare pickering emulsion stabilized by TiO2 particles was determined by amount of TiO2 particles and ratio of water and oil phase. The type of pickering emulsion was dependent on wettability of particles for water and n-hexylalcohol. When the amount of TiO2 particles increased up to 5.00 wt%, the stability of pickering emulsion was showed to be improved. The most stable pickering emulsion was prepared in the case of W/O type which has the ratio of oil and water phase (3 : 7). We tried to prepare porous SiO2TiO2 composite pigments using a pickering emulsion as template at the optimal condition. Porous pigments were synthesized with Ludox HS-30 as an inorganic material by sol-gel process. The characteristics and shape of porous pigments were measured by optical microscope, SEM, BET, XRD and EDS.

  • In Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), service providers develop and deploy reusable services on the repositories, and service consumers utilize blackbox form of services through their interfaces. Services are also highly evolvable and often heterogeneous. Due to these characteristics of the service, it is hard to manage the faults if faults occur on the services. Autonomic Computing (AC) is a way of designing systems which can manage themselves without direct human intervention. Applying the key disciplines of AC to service management is appealing since key technical issues for service management can be effectively resolved by AC. In this paper, we present a theoretical model, Symptom-Cause-Actuator (SCA), to enable autonomous service fault management in SOA. We derive SCA model from our rigorous observation on how physicians treat patients. In this paper, we first define a five-phase computing model and meta-model of SCA. And, we define a schema of SCA profile, which contains instances of symptoms, causes, actuators and their dependency values in a machine readable form. Then, we present detailed algorithms for the five phases that are used to manage faults the services. To show the applicability of our approach, we demonstrate the result of our case study for the domain of 'Flight Ticket Management Services'.

Anti-wrinkle Effect of Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) Seed Extract (II) (홍화씨추출물의 피부 주름개선 효과(II))

  • Phytoestrogens derived from plants and foods, which are diphenolic compounds with structural similarities to natural and synthetic estrogens, have been shown to estrogenic and antiestrogenic actions. Particularly, recent study revealed that phenolic compounds in safflower seed, such as serotonin derivatives, lignans and flavonoids, could be acted as phytoestrogens. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) seed extract (SID C.SE), therefore, are receiving a renewed interest as potential therapeutic source against skin wrinkles induced by estrogen deficiency. This study was conducted to investigate the anti-wrinkle effect of SID C.SE on normal human fibroblasts through the expression of type I procollagen and UVA-induced MMP-1 in vitro. The SID C.SE increased the type I procollagen expression, comparable to trans-retinol and reduced UVA-induced MMP-1 expression in a dose-dependent manner. The clinical study indicated that cream group treated with 0.1% SID C.SE significantly reduced a skin wrinkles, as compared with a control (non-treated cream group) (p<0.05). These results suggest that the safflower seed extract may be useful as potential source of anti-wrinkle cosmetics.

Physicochemical properties and antioxidant activities of hot water extracts from medicinal fruit mixture (약용열매 혼합 열수 추출물의 이화학적 특성 및 항산화 활성)

  • This study was conducted to examine the physicochemical properties and antioxidant activities of medicinal fruit extracts (Corni fructus, Schizandra chinensis, Rubus coreanus Miquel and Lycii folium) with different extraction mixing ratios (MS, an equal ratio of the medicinal fruit = 1.25:1.25:1.25:1.25; M1, 2:1:1:1; M2, 1:2:1:1; M3, 1:1:2:1 and M4, 1:1:1:2) from medicinal fruit. pH, sugar content and acidity of the extracts were 3.22~3.52, 3.204.20Brix and 3.60~5.85%, respectively. The extraction yield of M2 (42.33%) was higher than those of MS (36.03%), M1 (40.40%), M3 (32.53%) and M4 (35.90%). The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of M3 were 14.54 g/100 g and 5.65 g/100 g, respectively. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities of M3 at 1,000μg/mL were 86.09% and 90.49%, respectively. The ferric-reducing antioxidant power and the reducing power of M3 at 2501,000μg/mL were 0.360.86μM and 0.21~0.96, respectively. The antioxidant activities of M3 were significantly higher than those of the other extracts. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that medicinal fruit extracts had potential as a functional material.

Dependance of hot-zone position on AlN single crystal growth by PVT method (PVT법에 의한 AlN 단결정 성장에서 Hot-Zone 의존성)

  • AlN single crystals were grown by the PT (Physical vapor transport) method with position-changable induction coil. And the graphite crucible dimensioned Φ90×H120 was used on processing. The temperature was 19502050C and ambient pressure was 150~1 Torr. And the hot-zone was changed according to times on growing for result comparison. When hot-zone by coil is located below far enough (> 40 mm) from AlN crystal concentration position, the as-grown crystals physical size is better (300μm/hr) than another condition, but the condition-reproducibility was very poor. However the closer the distance between hot-zone and AlN growing posion, the smaller the size of as-grown crystal and the rarer the generation of the crystal nuclear, but the crystal growing condition is stable for quality. The best condition for both growth rate and quality is gained when the starting position of hot-zone coil is about 20 mm distance from growing position. For the best growth condition, the position of hot-zone is very sensitive factor and the further more the condition of speed of coil shift also must control.

Effect of New Hallyu: Influence of K-POP Consumption on Chinese Attitude toward Korea and Hallyu (신한류 효과: 중국인들의 K-POP 이용이 한국과 한류에 대한 호감도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aims to examine how the usage of K-POP and Korean TV dramas influence Chinese attitude toward Korea and Hallyu as K-POP has gained its popularity all over the world. The result indicated that 'gender', 'duration of watching Korean TV drama, 'the evaluation of Korean TV dramas', 'duration of listening K-POP and 'evaluation of K-POP' are strong predictors influencing attitude toward Korea among Chinese people. On the other hand, in relation to Hallyu, demographic factors are not appeared as the predictors, however, duration of watching Korean TV dramas, 'the evaluation of Korea TV dramas' and 'evaluation of K-POP' have been shown to influence the attitude toward Hallyu in a positive way. As the practical implication this result suggests that content, either Drama or K-POP, has more importance to appeal global audience rather than famous star has. Furthermore, when variables such as watching Korea TV dramas and evaluation of Korea TV drama have been controlled, 'evaluation of K-POP' appeared as a strong predictor to influence attitude of Korea and Hallyu in a positive way. This result indicates that the main content of Hallyu in China has shifted from Korean Dram to K-POP as the New Hallyu has been coming.

  • Background: Immune regulatory dendritic cells (DCs) play an important role in maintaining self-tolerance. Recent evidences demonstrate that DCs expressing indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), which is involved in tryptophan catabolism, play an important role in immunoregulation and tolerance and induce T cell apoptosis. This study was devised to examine the role of IDO in the oral tolerance induction in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mouse model. Methods: Beginning 2 weeks before immunization, CII was fed six times to DBA/1 mice and the effect on arthritis was assessed. In tolerized mice, CD11c+ DCs were isolated and stimulated with CII, IFN-γ, and LPS with or without IDO inhibitor, 1-methyl-DL-tryptophan (1-MT) and IDO expression by CD11c+ DCs was analyzed using FACS and RT-PCR. The expression of IDO, MHC II, CD80, and CD86 by CD11c+ DCs were examined using confocal microscopy. Regulatory effect of CD11c+ DCs on Ag-specific T cell proliferative response to CII was examined by mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) with or without 1-MT. Results: The proportion of IDO-expressing CD11c+ DCs was slightly higher in tolerized mice than in CIA mice and significantly increased after stimulation with CII, IFN-γ, and LPS in an IDO-dependent manner. On confocal microscopic examination, the expression of IDO was higher and those of MHC II and CD86 were lower in CD11c + DCs from tolerized mice compared to those from CIA mice. On MLR, CD11c+ DCs from tolerized mice inhibited T cell proliferative response to CII in an IDO-dependent manner. Conclusion: Enhanced IDO expression by CD11c+ DCs from tolerized mice may contribute to the regulation of proliferative response of CII-reactive T cells and could be involved in the induction of oral tolerance to CII.

Managerial Ownership and Debt Choice (경영자 소유구조와 부채선택)

  • This study examines how managerial ownership structure affects the borrower's choice of private versus public debt using 2,608 firm-year data for 2006-2008. This paper investigates the relationship between managerial ownership structure and debt choice. Managerial ownership is measured using number of stocks and unexercised stock-options and debt is classified public and private debt. The results find that there is a positive association between managerial ownership and the private debt dependence and also find that when firms finance additional funds, higher managerial ownership leads managers to choose private debt not public debt. Since private debt can be classified into bank debt and non bank debt, this paper examines the relationship between managerial ownership and a choice of bank debt. The results indicate that managers with higher ownership are more likely to use bank debt over public debt and non bank debt. By examining the relation between managerial ownership and a debt choice, this paper has following contributions. First, this study shows that managerial ownership affects the choice of the source of financing using three different proxies of managerial ownership. Second, this study classified private debt into bank debt and non-bank debt and provide the evidence of preference toward private debt especially bank debt among other financing sources. Finally, there are extensive studies related to capital structure and managerial ownership, but there is little empirical research on the debt choice and managerial ownership. Thus, this paper adds to literature by exploring the effects of managerial ownership on a debt choice.
