COSPAS-SARSAT is the search and rescue system for providing a distress alarm and a position identification using an international satellite and ground facilities. Aviators, mariners and land users worldwide are equipped with COSPAS-SARSAT distress beacons, which could help save their in emergency situations anywhere in the world. As the existing COSPAS-SARSAT system is generally operated by LEO(Low-altitude Earth Orbit) Satellite System, the time from the distress beacon to the rescue is more than 1 hour with average and the accuracy of the distress location is about 5 Km. Therefore, in order to overcome this problem, the development for the next generation SAR(search and rescue) system which uses the MEO(middle-altitude Earth Orbit) satellites is going on the Galileo project. EU is developing this project for the full operation capability in 2011, and this project will have SAR payloads and support to the Search and Rescue service-herein called SAR/Galileo. SAR/Galileo will have the performance of a few meter accuracy, within 10 minutes to rescue from reception of distress messages, and Return Link Service(from the SAR operator to the distress emitting beacon), thereby facilitating more efficient rescue operations and helping to reduce the rate of false alerts. As the disaster is larger every year, the ground station, MEOLUT for next generation ASR/Galileo is urgently needed for the lifesaving for the larger disaster, the research for beacon and the ground station such as MEOLUT for introducing the next generation SAR/Galileo in Korea is very timely and is important. This paper presents the procedures and the strategies for the participation, the area to develop reasonably, and the propulsion organization for developing the SAR/Galileo ground system in Korea.
This paper deals with finite element analysis for free vibration and forced sinusoidal vibration of Ka- and Ku- band antenna structures using MSC/NASTRAN. The structures are designed to satisfy minimum resonance frequency requirement in order to decouple the dynamic interaction of the satellite antenna with the spacecraft bus structure. The large mass method was utilized to analyze output acceleration according to the forced sinusoidal vibration inputs in X-, Y- and Z- directions. The analysis results can also be used thor verification experimental planning of satellite antenna.
In the New space era, satellites are being developed to perform on-orbit service (OOS) missions. Various missions for orbital service include failure repair, refueling, towing, component replacement, and space construction, and in order to do so, a robot arm payload must be mounted. Unlike conventional satellite payloads, the robot arm payload is not move in a fixed state, but is a payload that must move continuously to perform the mission. It is also characterized by the need to perform the mission while being directly exposed to outer space, rather than existing inside the structure of the satellite. Due to the characteristics of these payloads, thermal design and interpretation that can be operated smoothly in an extreme space thermal environment is essential, but there are not many papers on thermal design and interpretation of the robot arm. This paper introduces and summarizes cases of thermal design and interpretation of robot arm payloads developed so far, and finally, it intends to suggest directions for thermal design and interpretation of robot arm payloads to be developed in the future.

The software-based satellite simulator has been developed from the start of the project to resolve the restriction and limitation of using hardware-based software development platform. It enables the development of flight software to be performed continuously since initial phase. The satellite simulator emulates the on-board computer, I/O modules, electronics and payloads, and it can be easily adapted and changed on hardware configuration change. It supports the debugging and test facilities for software engineers to develop flight software. Also the flight software can be loaded without any modification and can be executed as faster than real-time. This paper presents the architecture and design of software-based GEO satellite simulator which has hot-standby redundancy mechanism, and flight software development and test under this environment.

MEMS solid thruster module is composed of solid thruster and its control board. It was developed for the purpose of an academic research. Therefore, thermo-mechanical design and verification for space usage were not considered in the design phase. To mount it on a cube satellite without any design modification, technical efforts at the system level structure design is required. In this study, we proposed a structural design concept to mount the MEMS thruster module by using brackets for guaranteeing structure safety under launch loads and easier mating and de-mating of MEMS thruster module during test phase. The effectiveness of the design has been verified through structural analysis and vibration test. In addition, electrical connection method using spring pins between MEMS thruster and control board is effective for guaranteeing the structural safety under launch vibration loads.
Low resolution spectroscopic observations of leo-stationary satellites over the Korean peninsula have been carried out at the KyungHee Optical Satellite Observing Facility (KOSOF) with a 40cm telescope. We have observed 9 telecommunication satellites and 1 weather satellite of 6 countries. The obtained spectral data showed that satellites could be classified and grouped with similar basic spectral feature. We divided the 10 satellites into 4 groups based on spectral slop and reflectance. It is suggested that the material types of the satellites can be determined through spectral comparisons with the ground laboratory data. We will continuously observe additional geo-stationary satellites for the accurate classification of spectral features.
Most Nanosatellites are launched in nanosatellite deployers. Nanosatellites in the deployer are turned off during launch, and they start boot sequence after deploying at their mission orbit. For this reason, nanosatellites must have deployment switch. Most of the nanosatellite deployment switch has two part, first is electric switch to boot the satellite system and second is mechanical assembly to push the switch. In most cases, electric switches are installed in the satellite main body, and the switch operations are translated via the mechanical assembly. These implementations are mechanically complicated and hard to guarantee the appropriate operation without the problems due to friction between pusher and satellite structure. This paper proposes the another implementation method of deployment switch for nanosatellites by installing the electric switch outside the main body without any kind of mechanical parts.
