  • The 8-VSB modulation, the transmission standard for the terrestrial digital television(DTV) of the Advanced Television Systems Committee(ATSC), suffers from multipath fading because it conveys information on the amplitude. To solve this problem, decision feedback equalizers(DFE's) have been commonly used in terrestrial DTV receivers. However, under severe channels, such as a 0 dB ghost channel or a single frequency network (SFN) channel, the DFE shows unstable convergence due to the error propagation caused by decision errors. Instead of unstable time-domain DFE schemes, by proposing a frequency-domain direct-inversion equalization method, we try to guarantee stable equalization and achieve low symbol error rates. To secure the existence of a channel inverse, channel-matched filtering and noncausal filtering are carried out prior to equalization. Simulation results show that the proposed method performs much better than existing DFE schemes in terms of both the stability and the symbol error rate.

  • In this paper, wideband Ku-band downconverter was designed to receiver digital satellite broadcasting. The low-nose downconverter was designed to form four local oscillator frequencies(9.75, 10, 10.75 and 11.3 GHz) representing a low phase noise due to VCO-PLL with respect to input signals of 10.7 to 12.75 GHz and 3-stage low noise amplifier circuit by broadband noise matching, and to select intermediate frequency bands by digital control. The developed low-noise downconverter exhibited the full conversion gain of 64 dB, and the noise figure of low-noise amplifier was 0.7 dB, the P1dB of output signal 15 dBm, and the phase noise -85 dBc@10kHz at the band 1 carrier frequency of 9.75 GHz. The low noise block downconverter(LNB) for wideband digital satellite broadcasting designed in this paper can be used for global satellite broadcasting LNB.

  • By using a slot-line in combination with microstrip lines, a coplanar wide-band balun is designed and fabricated. The slot-line of balun junction is compensated to be operated in C-band(4~8GHz), and therefore the results are agreement with theoritical prediction. Experimental data are given for a 3-section Chebyshev transformer-matched balun with a balanced-to-unbalanced line impedance ratio of 2 : 1. A bandwidth from 3.5GHz to 7.0GHz is obtained with V.S.W.R. of below 1.2 : 1. Maximum insertion loss is measured as 0.9dB, and the phase difference varies linearlly within 180$^{\circ}$$\pm$5$^{\circ}$.

  • In this paper, we derive a spectral function and a new impedance profile of non-uniform tapered transmission lines by applying the Fourier transform to a linearized Riccati equation. We compensate the error which is from a linearized Riccati equation by adding a Taylor series to the impedance profile. Added terms remove discontinuities In the impedance profile at both ends of the non-uniform section. We show that a calculated spectrum approaches to a target spectrum of filter by an iterative method and numerical examples are given to illustrate the role of the phase function. As the design method which is shown in present paper provides a excellent adaptability for the design of non-uniform tapered transmission lines, the present method can be applied to design filters and impedance matching circuits with various passband characteristics.

  • In this paper, we suggests a Ka-band LNB considering next-generation UHD satellite TVRO. Since Ka-band has grater attenuation than Ku-band in atmosphere, we designed the low-noise down-converter to improve receiving sensitivity and to extend a dynamic range of receiver. It aims to compensate a quality of ultra high definition transmission signal for rainfall. The low-noise block diagram consists of a three-staged amplifier (LNA), band-pass filter for deleting image (BPF), mixer and IF when considering nonlinear characteristics in the receiver RF front end module. Also, we showed a LNB through optimization processes affecting dynamic range directly in receiver FEM. Asa resuly of experiment, the gain of low-noise down-converter show between 58.5dB and 60.7dB, the noise figure has a high characteristic as 1.38dB. Finally, the phase noise of local oscillator is -63.10dBc at 100MHz offset frequency.

  • In this study, highly miniaturized short-wavelength meander line employing eriodically patterned ground structure (PPGS) was developed for application to miniaturized on-chip passive component on GaAs MMIC (monolithic microwave integrated circuit). The meander line employing PPGS showed shorter wavelength and slow-wave characteristic compared with conventional meander line. The wavelength of the meander line employing PPGS structure was 17 % of the conventional meander line on GaAs MMIC. Due to its slow-wave structure, the meander line employing PPGS exhibited large propagation constant than conventional meander line, which resulted in larger phase shift and shunt inductance value. Above results indicate that the meander line employing PPGS is a promising candidate for application to a development of miniaturized on-chip RF components as well as inductor with a high inductance value on GaAs MMIC.

  • This paper suggests an estimation method of the source signal and the channel impulse response (CIR) using ray-based blind deconvolution (RBD) in the underwater acoustic channel environment where Doppler effect exists by the relative motion between source and receiver. It is difficult to estimate the CIR on Doppler effect by the matched filter with a highly Doppler-sensitive waveform such as the m-sequence signal because Doppler shift can severely degrade the correlation between the received signal corrupted by Doppler effect and the original source signal. In this study, the Doppler-shifted source-signal's phase is estimated using the RBD, and the received signal is compensated by it to obtain the Doppler-corrected CIR. It is verified that using the matched filter with the received signal from the experimental data fails to estimate the CIR while the obtained CIR by the suggested method has the similarity to the propagation path of the ray model. Also, the results show that the reconstructed source signal using the RBD has the better Doppler shift compensation than the Doppler-shifted source signal derived from scattering function.

  • This paper describes an acoustic communication receiver structure, which is designed for QPSK (Quadrature Phase Shift Keying) signal with 25 kHz carrier frequency and 5 kHz symbol rate, and takes samples from received signal at 100 kHz sampling rate. Based on the described receiver structure, optimum design parameters, such as number of taps of FF (Feed-Forward) and FB (Feed-Back) filters and forgetting factor of RLS (Recursive Least-Square) algorithm, of joint equalizer are determined to minimize the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance of the joint equalizer output symbols when the acquisition data in shallow water using implemented acoustic transducers is decimated at a rate of 2:1 and then enforced to the input of receiver. The transmission distances are 1.4 km, 2.9 km, and 4.7 km. Analysis results show that the optimum number of taps of FF and FB filters are different according to the distance between source and destination, but the optimum or near optimum value of forgetting factor is 0.997. Therefore, we can reach a conclusion that the proper receiver structure could change the number of taps of FF and FB filters with the fixed forgetting factor 0.997 according to the transmission distance. Another analysis result is that there are an acceptable performance degradation when the 16-tap-length simple filter is used as a low-pass filter of receiver instead of 161-tap-length matched filter.
