  • Studies were carried out to investigate effects of temperature and photoperiod on diapause induction and of juvenile hormone III and 20-hydroxyecdysone treatment on diapausing adults of the alder leaf beetle, Agelastica coerulea Baly(Chrγsomelidae: Coleoptera). Its life cycle and ovarian development in adults were also observed. The beetle had one year life cycle with egg, larval, pupal and adult periods being 7-10, 19-21, 14-15 days and about 10 months, r respectively. All adults showed a diapause syndrome when the larvae were reared at $20^{\circ}C$ or $25^{\circ}C$ in combination of photoperiods of 16L/8D, 12L/12D, or 8L/16D. Their ovarioles did not s show any development of vitellogenesis before or during diapause and even when exposed at $15^{\circ}C$ after overwintering. When diapausing adults were treated with JH III they resumed feeding and laid several eggs and broke diapause condition temporally. But diapausing adults treated with 20-hydroxyecdysone did not show any response.

  • The southern type grasses announced for the test were the Bermudagrass cultivars (Giant, Cheyenne, Mohawk, Panchero Frio, Common and Tifton 85) and the Bahiagrass cultivars (TifQuik, Tifton 9), and the changes in the productivity and nutrient content were surveyed in Jeju area (450m altitude). The different cultivars were sowed by broadcasting or drill seeding method, and Tifton 85 was transplanted from sprigs. The fresh and dry matter yield showed varying significant differences for different cultivars (p<0.05). The fresh yields of Tifton 85, TifQuik and Tifton 9 were excellent, compared to the other cultivars, and for the dry matter yield, Tifton 85 and Tifton 9 were excellent when compared to the other cultivars. Crude protein content showed significant differences among different cultivars (p<0.05). Cheyenne, Mohawk, Panchero Frio, and Common showed differences in the crude protein content by sowing method and harvest time (p<0.05). The different cultivars showed differences in the crude fiber content (p<0.05), and Tifton 9 registered significantly high content and Mohawk and Tifton 85 showed significant crude fiber content by harvest time (p<0.05). According to these results, the southern type grass cultivars showed big differences in the regenerative capacity against damage from frost, productivity, and nutrient content, so they need to be chosen according to the purposes, and to increase their usage, their evaluation needs to be conducted at various altitudes.

  • The mulberry small weevil, Baris deplanata ROELOFS, has highly infested mulberry trees in Korea. As the damage caused by the mulberry small weevil in mulberry fields has been increased over the country since 1969, the authors has carried out a series of biological and controlling studies on the pest from 1971 to 1972. The results obtained are summarized as follows. 1. The adult weevil is elongate oval in shape with black in color and the probocis is long as usual in curculionidae. The size of adult female is 3.30${\pm}$0.04mm in length, 1.47${\pm}$0.04mm in width, and the length of proboscis is 1.25${\pm}$0.014mm, while adult male is 3.28${\pm}$0.06mm in length, 1.40${\pm}$0.04mm in width, and the length of proboscis is 1.30${\pm}$0.02mm. The antenna is geniculate consisting of 12 segments. The terminal sternite of the abdomen has a pointed tip in male but not in female. 2. The egg is long oval in shape, milky white in color, 0.51${\pm}$0.05mm in length and 0.32${\pm}$0.02mm in width. 3. The mature larva is cylindrical and light yellowow in color except the head of dark brown, and legless, 3.88${\pm}$0.06mm in length, 1.40${\pm}$0.02mm width, each segment bearing many wrinkless and short setae. 4. The pupa is long oval, milky white and exarate, 3.53${\pm}$0.09 in length, 1.40${\pm}$0.03mm in width. 5. Majority of the species has one generation through a year and overwinters as adult in xylem of withered branch and come out again from late April to early May in next year. But some of the female oviposit in the same year and the offsprings overwinter as larva (0.4%) or pupa (0.1%) 6. The eggs are mostly laid under the cork layer of withered branch and the number of eggs deposited by an adult female is 73.44${\pm}$8.74, the average egg-laying period is 33.88${\pm}$6.04 days. The incubation period is 11.69${\pm}$0.39 days, the larval period 45.04${\pm}$1.63 and the pupal period 11.05${\pm}$0.49 days. The period of adult's activity is 46.7${\pm}$5.90 days. 7. The larvae feed on the cambium under the bark and adults feed on the winter bud, the latent bud, the leaf stalk and the base of newly shoot. 8. An active period of adults was observed during the period of 4 months from April to July. However, the peak of adult-density occurred in the early May (in the fields of spring-prunning) and early to middle June(in the fields of summer-prunning). 9. There is a positive correlation between the density of larvae and diameter and length of the branches. 10. The pattern of distributions of the adult of mulberry small weevil is negative binomial distribution. 11. The chalcid fly was disclosed to be a natural enemy which was parasite on the larvae of mulberry small weevil and its parasitic ratio was 11.9%. 12. Phosvel D, Malix D, Salithion EC, DDVP EC, and Phosvel EC were effective for the control of adults and Satchukoto-S EC, and Salithio EC were effective for the control of larvae.

  • To obtain the fundamental data for the mass seedling production of grunt, Hapalogenys nitens, we investigated the influence of salinity and cold water temperature on hatching and survival of eggs and growth and survival of larvae and fry. In regards to salinity, we surveyed the hatching rate and floating rate of fertilized eggs, the floating rate and survival rate of hatching larvae, and the survival and growth of fry. In respect to cold temperature, we investigated the influence of degree of daily temperature decrease, acute temperature shock, and slow temperature decreases on the survival, feeding and swimming activities of fry. In the salinity experiment, the hatching and floating rates of fertilized eggs, and the floating and survival rates of hatching larvae, were shown to be higher in seawater than in brackish water. Growth and survival of larvae and fry were not different between seawater (25~32 psu) and brackish water (5~20 psu), but were significantly lower in freshwater. In the cold-temperature test, three tests showed that rearing of fry in cold water and acutely decreasing water temperature to less than $10^{\circ}C$ reduced the survival, feeding and swimming activities of the fry. Therefore, we concluded that low salinity (less than 32 psu) could reduce the hatching rate and survival of eggs, but the growth and survival of fry were not influenced by salinity, and cold water (less than $10^{\circ}C$) decreased metabolism of grunt. During winter, we found a low-temperature limit at $8^{\circ}C$.

  • Seasonal occurrence and ovarian development of the bean bug, Riptortus clavatus Thunberg (Heteroptera: Alydidae), were studied at a soybean field and an university campus in which host plants are less available for the bug in Gyeongnam province with aggregation pheromone traps in 2004. It was assumed that the bug passed three generations per year at the university campus. Adults of the 1st generation might occur from early July to early August and that of the 2nd one from mid August to late September. Adults of the 3rd generation occurred from early October to mid November, entered reproductive diapause without carrying eggs in the ovaries of females during winter, and resumed activity from late March of the next year. Full-grown eggs in the ovaries of the overwintered females were first observed at the 1st half of May. Two peaks of occurrence, from early August to mid September and from mid October to mid November, were shown at soybean field that was sowed on May 24. The two peaks almost corresponded to those of the 2nd and 3rd generations at the university campus, respectively.

  • 'Jopung' (Avena sativa L.), a winter oat for forage use, was developed by the breeding team at the Department of Rice and Winter Cereal Crop, NICS, RDA in 2009. It was derived from an original cross between the $F_1$ hybrid of 'Early80' and 'PA202-210-S' and 'Walken' in 1999. Subsequent generations followed by the cross were handled in bulk and pedigree selection programs at Suwon and Yeoncheon, respectively. A line, 'SO99006-B-YB-29-Y1', was selected for earliness and good agronomic characteristics and designated as a line name of 'Gwiri65'. The line 'Gwiri65' was subsequently evaluated for earliness and forage yield in four different locations, Yesan, Iksan, Kimjae, and Jeju, from 2007 to 2009 and finally named as 'Jopung'. Over 3 years, the average forage dry matter yield of cultivar 'Jopung' harvested at milk-ripe stage was $17.3MT\;ha^{-1}$, compared with $13.6MT\;ha^{-1}$ of check cultivar 'Swan'. The silage quality of 'Jopung' was superior to the check cultivar 'Swan' in crude protein content, and was similar to the check cultivar in percent total digestible nutrients (TDN). Cultivar 'Jopung' is suitable primarily for winter planting in the southern regions of Korean peninsula.

  • The bean bug, Riptortus clavatus Thunberg (Hemiptera: Alydidae), is a pest of soybeans and tree fruits. It enters reproductive diapause during winter. We studied the effect of different combinations of temperature, day length, and treatment period on the termination of diapause in R. clavatus using adult females collected in October and November 2006. Ovarian development was used to determine diapause termination. The treatments were: (1) HTLD; $25^{\circ}C$, 14L:10D treatment for 1, 2, 3 weeks and 30 days, (2) HTSD; $25^{\circ}C$, 10L:14D treatment for 1, 2, and 3 weeks, (3) LTLD; $8^{\circ}C$, 14L:10D treatment for 1, 2, and 3 weeks followed by HTLD for 3 weeks, and (4) LTSD; $8^{\circ}C$, 10L:14D treatment for 1, 2, and 3 weeks followed by HTLD for 3 weeks. The HTSD treatments did not affect ovarian development, and resulted in no significant difference in the number of mature eggs in ovaries or the percentage of diapause-terminated females compared to the control females before treatment. The percentage of females that terminated diapause was significantly higher in the HTLD treatment than in the HTSD treatment. The HTLD treatment for more than 14 days increased the percentage of diapause-terminated females, accelerated the development of the ovaries, and increased the number of mature eggs in ovaries. Compared with the HTLD or HTSD treatments, the LTLD or LTSD treatments followed by the HTLD treatment accelerated ovarian development and increased the number of ovipositing females. The pre-LTSD treatment for 1 week was enough to increase the number of eggs oviposited.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand meteorological and climatological factors that have influence on the garlic product in Seosan and Taean, and to analyze the economic value according to the use of climatical information data for garlic farmers. The climatological characteristics and trends in this area are analyzed using the meteorological data at the Seosan local meteorological agency from 1984 to 2013, the national statistical data for the product of garlic from 1989 to 2013, and the scenario data for climate change (RCP 4.5 and 8.5) for the period from 2001 to 2100. The results are as follows. First, the condition of lower temperature for garlic growth in winter season is satisfied with the mean air temperature. The wind speed are lower and stronger in Seosan and Taean than other garlic area. The suitable condition for the growth of northern type of garlic shows the decreasing trend in the accumulated precipitation in May. However, the area of growing the northern type garlic in the future is likely diminished because mean air temperature, accumulated precipitation, and mean wind speed are strong in the harvest time of garlic. Second, the seedtime of the northern and southern type of garlic using climate change scenarios (RCP 4.5, 8.5) in Seosan and Taean is getting late as time passes. and the harvest time gets faster, which indicates s that the period of garlic cultivation becomes shorter from 50 days to around 90 in the next 100 years. Third, the beginning days of white rot and delia platura of garlic are estimated by applying to the meteorological algorithm using mean air temperature and soil humidity. Especially, the beginning day of white rot garlic is shown to be faster according to the scenarios of RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. Fourth, the product of garlic (kg/10a) shows a high correlation with the minimum air temperature of a wintering time, the mean wind speed of a wintering time, the accumulated precipitation of a corpulent time, and the mean relative humidity of corpulent time of garlic. On the other hand, the analysis of garlic product when using the meteorological information data in cultivating garlic in Seosan and Taean reveals that the economic value increases up to 9% in total.
